How to install a mailbox lock on a wooden box

Mailbox locks, also called RV locks, cylinder locks, desk and drawer locks, or cam locks, are not really designed for securing a door to a frameless body. People normally buy these to replace an existing lock, rather than for a custom build such as this one. This video demonstrates how to determine where to drill the hole, and how to modify the metal latch plate so that the door closes snugly against the box.

Great problem solving! Did you consider they type of latches found on cedar/blanket/hope chests? Also, I saw some neato latches which use scan RFID chips in a credit card type of key. But they look like they take up a lot of room.

Good idea. A cedar-chest lock would have looked great, and been very subtle on the outside. Easy to pick, but then again, so are mailbox locks. We had some procurement constraints, so it's built with a combination of Home Depot hardware, and lumber from my workshop that I happily donated for my own enjoyment during the build.

I was just looking up RFID locks. They are a little bulky, but a lot less expensive than I expected. I'll have to keep that in mind for future projects.
