Tuned in to see wiring, which was glossed over. BTW when drilling out of a house, use a small pilot bit and go outside and use the spade bit from the outside in, so as not to blow out the hole as shown.

What I'm curious about, is drilling a hole through the box impede its UL listing and is that permissible as per the NEC?
@Ariel1S3 жыл бұрын
No, it's not. At the very minimum you need a cable clamp where the wire enters the box. Also that waterproofing with some putty on wood is not enough. And you need to seal the external box.
@adammorgan93042 жыл бұрын
@@Ariel1S that duct seal is sufficient for sealing around the back of the box. Especially once he screwed it to the siding. But you definitely aren’t supposed to drill through the back of those boxes. He’ll be alright though.

Love how This old house ALWAYS makes these jobs look easy, but choosing homes that have basements or easy access to do this. Many homes have metal outlet boxes that are nailed to the framing. Your not drilling that like you just showed. NOt sure I'd want a switch that low on the ground or if I'd want to loose the outlet either.

Well for starters he drills from the inside of an internal box directly outside. Inside that box there is no method to hold that wire in the box. you can't modify wall boxes as that "was not intended by the manufacturer". No matter the locality codes will work with how the manufacturer for the box or fixture has designed because they work off of the National electrical Code (NEC) and they feed each other for how to do things.
