Hi, Mike. Just discovered your channel. Thanks for all the work you just did on my KLX300SM. I’ll be bringing it back soon to replace the clip style master link with a rivet style.

The only problem I see is with the flair. Under flaring the rivet can cause problems down the line. The energy transfer chains must endure are massive. What may appear to the naked eye has a strong flair could fail over time as the chain changes. Over flaring can crack the rivet causing it to fail. One must always follow the manufacture’s instructions. They go through the trouble of calculating optimum flair expansion for a reason. Manufactures always either include installation instructions which indicate recommended flair width, or they list them in their website. For example, the DID has a list of chains and flaring specs for each chain. For my bike’s chain, 525ZVM-X2, they recommend a flair of 0.224” - 0.236". For another 525 chain, the 525NZ, their recommended flair is 0.217” - 0.228". The recommended flair for their 520 chains can vary from 0.213” - 0.220" to 0.217” - 0.228". Even though it’s not much of a difference from one chain to another. There must be a reason why they list specific flair tolerances for different chains even though they are of the same size, rather than just giving a generic spec for all chains of the same size. If your chain doesn’t come with instructions and specs, check out the manufacture’s site. Interestingly enough, DID’s own video shows how to install a new chain. In that video the mechanic doesn’t measure anything. He does it until it feels tight enough. WTh! Haha! For me personally, being a former aviation tech, if the manufacture publishes recommended specs I will ALWAYS follow them.

I just did this for the first time putting new sprockets and chain on my bike and I broke my first pin. Is it okay if it just rip off the pressed plate and try again??

This a good video I think he forgot one thing the In my service manual it actually says to measure the flared out river or mushroomed river as he said with the caliper tool he also measured the chain width

For the price of the chain tool it should also measure would be nice to see real time as you tighten link down

Do you not need to use the proper grease that’s normally supplied with new chains? My chain didn’t come with any so I used normal automotive racing grease and now I’m really paranoid about it lol
@motomecha530
@motomecha530 Жыл бұрын
Ya, use the supplied grease but the “racing grease” should be ok, keep an eye on that link and make sure it remains flexible and replace if needed.

Grease is grease dude , dirt bikes going mudding four wheelers etc chain soaked in mud no problems so don't overreact about the wrong grease man.

Hey Moto mecha! I got my chain replaced by shop and I noticed that master link o ring is budge up. I took it back to the shop and they told me it’s normal but keep an eye out. Any advice?
@motomecha530
@motomecha530 Жыл бұрын
That does happen if they over pressed/tightened the chain plate. But it does happen anyways. Sometimes i push the o-ring back in and see what it does. The most important thing is to flex that link and make sure it flexes easy like the adjacent links.
