We did this in our kitchen, dining and living room. The ceilings was so ugly with poor patchwork from replacing fixtures and such, there was a long crack from where a very large beam had been, and what was left was popcorn. My husband spent time scraping it off in the kitchen and dining room then realized (thankfully) that it wasn’t necessary in the living room after all. So we just put the beadboard up over the popcorn, and it is perfectly level throughout all three rooms. It is a lot of work but it looks beautiful! Especially in a large area like ours. It’s so vintage and charming!

Did you have to put any strips under neath to attach to? What would you recommend for large room? Still put the spacers in there?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, I didn't put any strips under this beadboard. Typically I would apply an adhesive like liquid nails so I'd definitely recommend that for a larger room - along with 2" nails. I made spaces between my sheets of beadboard because I wanted to try to use only 1 piece of material. It'd be best to push these against each other. Good luck!
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Also, for a larger room, you may want to put in some real framing nails 8guage into the trim pieces - at least on the ends. Just so the little finishing nails don't get pulled out with all the weight (although I've never had this problem).

Im thinking about doing this to my basement ceiling. Its the best option. The drop ceiling was trash and theres wires going everywhere. So i was going buy the big panels and put it up just like that. Is there a good paint and tape (or something) i can use to cover up the seams (if they show, where one panel ends and another begins) even though the panels are white im going to paint it again to hide any nails or flaws in the panels.
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Hark, I would put a 1x3 or 1x4 piece of wood to cover up the seams and just paint it to match the rest of the ceiling. I don't think drywall compound or tape would cover it up long term and it'd be a lot of work for something that might not last.
@slinton5924 жыл бұрын

Did you glue the bead board or nail to the ceiling?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
I just nailed the beadboard for this particular room, but I'm usually a fan of overbuilding and adding caulk or liquid nails would give it that extra level quality.
@jensineleung36094 жыл бұрын
Is it safe to install even asbestos is present in the popcorn ceilings? I haven't had my ceilings tested yet but I'm just curious.
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jensine! Yes it should still be safe - this particular house is 1979 which was when they phased out asbestos (although there is still risk). Even if there is asbestos, it is only harmful when it is 'friable' meaning when it goes airborne. So if I were scraping this then I would definitely want tests but nailing something to it is fine. But definitely take all precautions you can!

What gauge and type of finishing nail did you use to attach the beadboard to the ceiling? I tried using 18 gauge X 2" Brad nails and they just pulled thru the beadboard.
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hey Stan, I used 18 gauge x 2" as well but I had to turn down the depth/power on the ryobi nailer so it wouldn't sink too much into the beadboard. Wish I had got that install part on camera but I forgot to hit record :( Once you get a few nails in one end of the beadboard, it should be supported on that side. Adding caulk or liquid nails will help and I've done that in other rooms.

How did you actually secure the panels to the ceiling before the 1 by? Did you just use trim nails? Did you use an adhesive?
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
For this one i didn't use any adhesive but I usually do on this. Some liquid nails (especially for big panels) and some finishing nails will hold it up there securely. I just used nails on this specific project
@seancanney45473 жыл бұрын
@@KellyConcepts The ceiling looks great. I've worked with bead board panels before and found them rather delicate when it comes to nailing. What type of nails did you use and did you have any trouble with the finish being damaged where the nails were placed?
@suvy224 жыл бұрын
Looking for how u are hanging it..not finishing it pls and thanks
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! To hang the actual beadboard, I just nailed it into the ceiling on this one (I thought my camera was recording but it wasn't during this part). I held it up, made sure the lines were straight on the board, and then nailed it in with the same finishing nails. On previous projects, I used liquid nails or caulking to help glue it to the ceiling and then also nailed it.

I wanted bead-board ceilings in our renovated basement bedrooms. Just floor joist to connect to, no drywall. My husband is a Mechanic and had done an amazing job framing these rooms and hanging these 4x8 sheets for little carpentry skills. He used the biggest flat head screws he could find because my suggestion of brad nails just didn’t seem logical to him because they have little to no way to hold the weight. It isn’t terrible having all the exposed screws ( I still need to paint it) but before I do, and suggestion on explaining if and why brad nails would work? I’d share a picture but I don’t see the option to. Thank you
@KellyConcepts3 жыл бұрын
My camera was off during the actual beadboard install unfortunately, but I popped in dozens and dozens of brad nails into each panel and most of the time I would use liquid nails to adhere the panels to the ceiling. Using a wide head screw is a great idea though and something I'd consider doing around the edge and place the trim over that. Glad yours turned out good!

1. You did not show the installation of the plywood. 2. That wainscoating is not "spec'd" for ceilings it is for walls. A building inspector would not approve that job, unless you show how to fasten the plywood. I hope you did not just use adhesive.
@KellyConcepts4 жыл бұрын
Yea sorry, I thought I had my camera on recording but didn't during that part of the install. I typically use liquid nails adhesive and some 2" 18ga nails to fasten it (mostly hitting the joist). Then the trim for additional support and looks. I sold this property a few weeks after install and inspector didn't pick up on anything - beadboard is somewhat common for ceilings
