Man… I log into KZbin and start viewing something political, but I always end up watching something like this, if not specifically Dr. Decks. Thank you, for something useful and sane. You’re awesome.

Dr - from a framer also located in the PNW I started following you years ago because I admired your attention to detail and quality. I always watch your videos and the last few months have been a little off but I always liked and watched the full thing through because of the mutual respect. This video is your best one yet. Love this format and great information.

This is the only way we install deck boards, a very clean and straight forward process.

Dr! Have you stopped using hidden fasteners? Or is it project specific?

thanks for the detail. very helpful along with your yt short on using a string line for first board. any idea how many sf of field boards you can lay in an hour, assuming 20 footers?

Does Trex offer similar plugs for their decking? We are installing Trex on our deck and would love to use the plugs instead of the hidden fasteners. Thank you for the awesome knowledge that you share on your channel. Priceless information for use rookies!!
@joec54734 ай бұрын
Good chance they do. But I would highly recommend timbertech or deckorators decking. Those 2 brands are hands down superior in more ways than one then Trex.
@lenbloom3384 ай бұрын
@@joec5473 Thanks for that information. We had a tongue and groove Timbertech deck installed on our deck about 20 years ago and it was a total nightmare. The deck failed twice because of buckling issues and we have been gun shy about using them again. I'm sure that they have figured out what the problem was because they seem to be going strong right now. Just hard to get that experience out of our heads!

Great video! Thanks for all the great content. One question. I’m installing TimberTech PVC Harvest collection boards. What’s your recommended joist spacing for this product?

How do you handle the instance where the screw hits either a crack in the framing or even a "soft" spot and won't pull down far enough for a plug, but also won't reverse back up? I've dealt with this by predrilling with a stop collar (at least then, if I hit a soft spot, the screw will be buried deep enough to get a plug in). Time consuming... but since only on my perimeter / stair boards... I use clips for the field. Do you predrill in case this happens?

Do you ever install the grooved boards ?

I've been searching for those style clamps for doing decks like this and I can't find them anywhere. I tried making my own jigs for the clamps but they fail after a while

We used a different size screw on some of the boards and the traditional plugs only fit the small screws that are hidden ones is there are there plugs for the larger head screws
@drdecks5 ай бұрын
No but you can buy a plug cutter to make larger plugs in an emergency situation

How do thecolor matched plugs stand up to winter weather freeze/thaw cycles? Do they work their way out of the holes over time?
@drdecks5 ай бұрын
The only time I’ve personally noticed a plug popping up was when I heat modify the decking

Does this same principle work when you install the deck boards at a 45 degree angle?
@drdecks5 ай бұрын
Yes but you need to run the joists closer together to allow for decking span
