Completed this build thanks to you over the weekend. It is such a great upgrade. Took me a some time to install with removal of the worn out gear. Fork tool was a blessing. Instant difference with very smooth steering. Used your advise with looking down the outside of the wheel to temporarily align the front and it worked out great. I bought a used 07 JK X a little over a year ago and remember watching this video and looking at the price for this kit and thinking “jeez that’s pricey, I’ll never be there!” But here I am already ordered the track bar and about to order this kit myself! All MC’d out and working on suspension before I move on to my UD install. Love the channel and as the time passes I still find myself watching these videos for the info and just for the fun of it!

Just did this Metalcloak tie rod and drag link install, along with a FOX ATS steering stabilizer. This video made it so straightforward Jason! Pickle fork separator didn’t work for me and I didn’t have the tool you used. Pitman arm separators I saw were too big for the space under the Wrangler. The one thing that did work easily for me was a 3/4 in. Ball Joint Separator I picked up from Harbor Freight. Off in less than a minute!

Your Jeep build has been the inspiration for mine. So far I am running the MetalCloak 3.5” Game Changer (I did opt for the RockSport shocks), MetalCloak Overland fenders in aluminum, and 37” Toyos wrapped around Method Racing bead locks. I just added this steering upgrade to my MetalCloak wishlist. They need to thank you for the business!! I really need you to slow down so I can keep up with your build! HAHA I would love to wheel with you one day Jason, keep up with the amazing build and videos!

Hey Jason, thanks for the inspiration to upgrade my steering components. I was at 59,000 miles and starting to get a little wobble from the steering wheel. After checking things out I found my tie rod ball joints were worn. I did order the metalcloak steering components rocksport edition. It all went in as easy as you showed on your video. The only thing I ran into was that I couldn’t properly center my steering wheel. The alignment shop dialed it all in. I really like the way the steering feels, and no shaking steering wheel. Couldn’t send you a picture. Otherwise I would. I’m driving a 2013 manual JKUR with a 2.5” Teraflex spring lift, a Teraflex monster track bar, Rancho 9000 adjustable shocks, and 35” B.F. Goodrich KO2 All Terrains. Can’t wait to get my rig in the dirt to see how that feels as well.

Hey Jason, Rick here again Thanks again for the info you gave me regarding the Core doors, I had to contact Bestop but everything worked out great!! This time I have a question concerning the steering upgrade, I noticed the Metalcloak tie-rod does not have chinch bolts at the adjustments to keep them from backing out. My question is, have you had any problems with alignment, since these chinch bolt don't exist. They appear to have lock nuts but I am concerned about vibration loosing up the lock nuts. I am a Metalcloak fan but when I talk to manufacturers, they tend to be bias to their product and don't give honest answers. Although I must admit Metalcloak has always been pretty up front and honest with me.
@AutoEdits2 жыл бұрын
Howdy and glad to hear about the bestop thing working out... I actually prefer the jam nut style over a clamp style and haven't really had any problem. After running the Rubicon trail, I had to use a crescent wrench to align the steering wheel a bit but that was one time several years ago. So I can still highly recommend the kit... still running it!

@2:12 ... I think this is the one thing that I've seen in any of your videos that seems a little off. A tie rod end is designed to have that movement in it. On that tie rod, its practically unnecessary since they only rotate on the axis of the tapered stud. The drag link TREs are the only ones that see a more three dimensional movement as they connect the steering knuckle to the pitman arm. Unless you had an incomplete thought, it would seem you're suggesting if you can rotate your drag link like that on your JK, then your TREs need replacing. You can do that on a brand new Jeep on the dealer lot. That rotation is normal. The only real concern would be if there was any LATERAL movement between the tapered stud and the body of the TRE.
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
That is really good input, thank you. I was getting way too much lateral movement from the TREs and on the drag link ends but couldn't show that on camera with the Jeep on jack stands already. I really appreciate the great way you pas that knowledge on in your comment!!!

Awesome video man! I love my MC products on my 2014 JKU Rubicon X. One thing unrelated. Get some Fluid Film and start drenching the underside of your jeep, the frame, inside the frame, everywhere, etc, with it every month or so. It'll keep it from rusting. It attracts, dirt and sand, but who cares. That stuff is easily rinsed off when you need to, and it's the underside of a Jeep, so again....who cares. Rather have dirt than rust. You take very good care of your Jeep, and even with that care, it's still rusting. (Damn Jeeps). The Fluid Film will keep it from doing that for a long long time if you stay on top of it. Take care dude!

My thoughts on steering changes on this lift are to leave the stock geometry for now. 3.5" is right on the border... any higher and yes for sure on high steer but since I want to maximize my up-travel, that would be limiting.

Hey Autoedit! I've been looking for steering upgrades for a while, so this would be a great upgrade. I got a question for ya though. My steering has become very tight, almost as if I'm losing my power steering. I've got virtually the same setup as you, 37s, but with a 4" Pro Comp lift. What do you think is the issue? I thought my steering box was going bad, or couldn't handle the load I was putting on the box. Any thoughts?
@Strikerage7 жыл бұрын
Ps... For reference, I can't even do a full lock U-turn. I gotta stop, back up, then go forward to continue my turn. It's pretty aggravating. I keep thinking something is gonna break!
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
Hey! It sounds like something might be binding up in the steering somewhere but it's hard to know without seeing it and there is a good chance the steering pump could be failing. We are demanding more performance from those parts than they were designed to give... does it make a growling or howl from the pump? Synergy offers a really good pump and steering box upgrade.

autoedit - Thanks! I'll have to check that brand out. I gotta say I don't recall any noticable noise coming from my steering at full lock, but I probably wasn't paying close enough attention. The pump itself may just be going bad. The power steering goes in and out depending on the movement of the Jeep. The only reason I suspected the steering box was because it's OEM, and the outside is rusted pretty good. Thanks for the feedback!

Awesome as always my man! Question: what are you using as your phone mount? Noticed it in the interior shot...been looking for something in that position. Thx

Howdy and thanks so much! That would be the Scosche magnetic mount... here's a link www.amazon.com/SCOSCHE-MAGDM-MagicMount-Universal-Devices/dp/B00I3E17RA/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1511712969&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=scosche+magic+mount&psc=1 Hope you are having a great weekend... absolutely love your new pup!

How come you didn't go ahead and do the drag link flip kit? That puts the drag link on top of the steering knuckle and puts the steering geometry back to near stock.
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
That's an easy one. I only did a 3.5" lift which is right on the edge of max geometry change parameters and at this point a link flop would actually limit my up travel. So it's up to the user on this one... I am VERY happy with the steering on this Jeep right now and don't feel the need to change anything else .... YET

@AutoEdits Jason, Looking at a 2016 bone stock rubicon 4d 3.6 liter auto 5sp Death wobble & Oil pump problems are my biggest concerns. Before I jump in, any suggestions? You have an Auto 5sp vs manual 6sp recommendation? Excellent content!!!

Most everything is fixable if you get it for a good price. Just enjoy it.

Hey Jason any updates on this setup...I know it's been a year on this steering setup and thinking about song it to my 3.5 dual rate metalcloak lift. Do you wish you would have went with someone else? Like yeti system. And do you think the metalcloak draglink flip would be useful on this setup? Videos are awesome brother been tuning in since you started this build
@AutoEdits5 жыл бұрын
I'm REALLY happy with this steering stuff and with a 3.5" lift... it's not recommended to do the flip... kills your valuable up travel. I will look to eventually do a hydro assist but this has been great.

@@AutoEdits ok thanks for reply... Will be putting in order soon. Will leave the draglink flip out of it. Just watched new video.. Love the new beadlocks .. Same tire I have and love them so far. You can't beat the price of them. I got mine for around 200 a piece on sale. They are a game changer

Great Video!, Hey Jason, Do you have any noise from the 6sp in 3-4th gear that sounds like marbles in a coffee can?.. I do, good thing I have the lifetime warranty.........Maybe

Thanks! That sounds like something is wrong for sure... get that in for some service!

Great video. Did you have any of that Death Wobble before or after installing the lift kit and now the steering upgrade.

Nope!

Great video!!! So you mentioned you're running 37's on your jeep. Have you changed your differentials gears or still running stocks? If you're still stock, how's that working out? Any problem with power starting, acceleration on the road or on climbing hiills or rocks

Any reason you did not use the flip kit? I am looking at new Steering systems and with 4' lift, I am looking at the high steer/flip kits. Thanks
@AutoEdits4 жыл бұрын
At 3.5" of lift, the steering flip limits up-travel and the slight bit of bump steer is acceptable until I go to the 4.5" lift and then I'll do the flip.

Great Video! I have a 2016 JK sport, 35 BFG, 3in Teraflex lift kit. I have what seems like a dead spot in my steering near center... you have to work the steering wheel left to right to maintain a sorta straight line. It drifts around on the streets a lot. Do you think the Metal Cloak Tie rod and drag link kit would solve that? Thanks

@autoedit what kind of grease did u use anything special? awesome vid as always keep it up 👍🏽👍🏽

Nice upgrade! I have this as well. Did you notice any bump steer? I have slight bump steer after installing mine. Nothing is loose either.
@AutoEdits6 жыл бұрын
Not much more than stock. I think the Rocksport steering dampener could be a bit stiffer. I'll try that and let you know!
@jasonbranch43816 жыл бұрын
@@AutoEdits I'm thinking of using the metalcloak drag link flip that already works with this kit. Apparently this is a very common issue. I'd like to see you install this!

Great Video! One question.. Why No Drag Link Flip Kit?
@AutoEdits6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Because I only went with the 3.5" lift the drag link flip would limit my up travel and so far the thing steers pretty good as is. Maybe with more lift or bigger tires it would help but for now I like it.
@stoneyt4447 жыл бұрын
great video, kind of a odd question, but who do you have do the alignment? Les schwab or someone who is familiar with lifted jeeps?
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
I just did the alignment myself but almost anyplace can probably handle it.
@erich21867 жыл бұрын
What are you doing about your steering shaft? I've been told that I would need hydro steering if running 37's and off-roading with a front locker.
@AutoEdits7 жыл бұрын
Always better to have a steering assist when running larger tires but to say you "need" it is wrong. This Jeep is a documented example of doing fine without but if I were to do more aggressive off roading on a regular basis, that upgrade would be moved up the to do list.
