Because most led headlights don't produce a controlled beam pattern, notice how the halogens look like a horizontal slit, good led bulbs will do that too, the wash pattern bulbs should be illegal.

Scotty, the problem here is how light is emitted in the reflector. A halogen bulb emits light at from an arc at point X in 3D space, and the LED bulb emits light from a diode at point Y in 3D space. Your reflector was only designed for the first scenario; the second results in light giong where you don't want it, wasting it and often blinding other motorists
@beefeater777

Agreed! Need separate headlight equipment (ie projector beam) in order to not blind other motorists. These led lights might look cool, but they mostly just blind others.

Yes, we can kinda see how bright the LED lights are (even though this is in no way a proper way to compare the two). We can also very clearly see how they lack the proper pattern of the light, which means you'll blind the oncoming traffic all the time. And what we can't see is how the pattern actualy looks on road - brighter looking light does not automatically equal better visibility.

They have a ballast but it is not called a ballast but it is called a "LED Driver" The ones that do not have a driver are low powered LEDs as the bright ones that cost $100+ use high end LEDs and they get driven at 2.5A or so, which is why you need a LED driver to provide that constant current and not rely on resistors

Chris CC yes, they will... If your vehicle came with projectors, whether or not they are halogen, hid and LED bulbs work okay, as long as they are the proper color. You can't see anything in bad weather with anything much higher than 4300 Kelvin. The human eye doesn't respond to the bluer parts of the spectrum as well... Plus, it messes with your hormone production, causes eye strain and headaches. 4300 K is the perfect color to have, brilliant warm white light...

Another thing to consider is the light color. Bluish, or whitish light will be reflected back in fog, rain or snow, whereas yellowish light (like halogen) will cut thru all that and actually light the road, not fog or the rain or snow itself. If you can choose the light color, choose the lowest color temperature available for the best efficiency.

+nippl pinshy Sometimes it's not the lights, sometimes it could be the type of housing they're in, or that the lights aren't properly adjusted. Personally, I've seen people with HALOGENS blind me all the time, and most of the time its not coming from their high beams. LED's belong in projector housings since that would shape up a better beam pattern which would less likely cause glare to oncoming traffic.

Also, brighter(as in raw Lumens) isn't necessarily true I have personally discovered. . It looks brighter as the color temperature is higher, more around 5000k vs the 3000k or so of the stock halogen, but may be lower lumen and thus the light does not throw as far.

Hate to break your bubble...But the halogen lights are better. What people are missing out on here is that the color range is what really makes these lights look brighter. If your car came with Halogen lights you should stick to them for the time being. These LED lights are not made to work with your head light's reflector. It was designed to work with the Halogen it came with. The color is a BIG deal. The yellower the light the better it will allow you to see at night. Specially in bad weather. The bluish glare that LED lights emit will light up every raindrop and / or every snowflake. This is the last thing you want. Also the bluish glare will cause visual fatigue. As it will light up road sign and cause you to squint. Your eyes are amazing and they can adjust to different lighting conditions. I have been driving professionally for years. Yes I have tried them (a lot of them) so I am talking from experience. I will not get into a pissing match with people who say LEDs are better. Yes they can be brighter, Yes they can be easier on the electrics of a automobile. This is not the point. The point here is to see, be seen, and not blind oncoming traffic with the glare that so many LEDs cause. Oh ya and One VERY important note These light are NOT DOT approved. (at least not the ones I have tried.) -John

It's the same as with HID lights. If you put them into lamp designed for halogen in majority of cases you'll blind the drivers coming towards you. Cars fitted with HID/LED from the factory have the lamps designed so that it would concentrate the light beam properly. So retrofitting a car with HID/LED using the lamps designed for halogen is not the same as having them fitted from factory for HID/LED.

Juan Fernandez- These cars were designed to use LEDs. Essentially they work like fog lights. They cut off light from shinning above the hood. But yes the color frequency is too high. there is no need to be that blue. Hey if it sells there will be some one willing to make it and sell it regardless of whether or not it is good. You are the man. Did you look at the box. Those certifications mean nothing except to say the light works as intended, and will not be dangerous if operated as directed. Yep and D.O.T. is for USA only. E4 certification is for Europe and even more expensive process. Anyways I'm pretty sure that thing doesn't really have it either. This would not pass MOT check (Yearly road worthiness test) and yeah they do check the bulbs.
@BashMonkeyRC
@BashMonkeyRC 7 жыл бұрын
Please make sure though that you don't install LED headlights into housings for old halogen bulbs, halogen housings are meant to focus the light and combined with LED bulbs it's outright dangerous to oncoming drivers A few years ago I was crossing over the ridge up at the edge of the county here, it was January and there was a foot of snow on the ground including the road. I see his headlights coming as I'm about to crest the top, but even though he should've seen my lights and dimmed his, he didn't so BAM we cross over at the same time and right up close I'm blinded by full bright white LED lights (clearly in a halogen housing). Luckily I wasn't going fast and braked slow to a stop, took almost a minute to see again and notice I was 10 feet short of hitting the guardrail. Seriously, more dangerous crap can happen when idiots get championed into buying LED lamps without doing the FULL upgrade.

The interior lights remind me of a 2009 Cadillac DTS i used to have. The instant in LED head lights is the coolest part. The backup lights are not sexy at all, as they have a projection through the lens that resembles someone shining a movie projector through the lens, but they are at least 2x brighter than the standard bulbs. And when i am going back, the bright lights alert people too.

It is possible with the right reflectors and bulbs, Eric the Car guy put a set in his Honda Element that had the proper pattern, in a projector style housing it can be made to work. In standard reflector styles though it's the same as dropping a HID in, horrible pattern and nasty glare. I love LED's but they have to be in properly engineered housings as the point that the light comes from can never be the same as a element style bulb.

I actually bought a box of 9MM cartridges for my pistol and there was a warning on the box that stated that "This item contains products known to the state of California, to be a health hazard ". No! Really!

I hate how bright these LED bulbs are. They seriously need a dim option for when driving in city limits just so you don't accidentally blind other drivers. Anytime one of these cars comes at me in the dark on the way home from work i always see sunspots for 30 seconds after. Even if i look away. My solution right now is to just close my eyes until the offending car goes past. Xenon bulbs are even worse. May halogen bulbs reign supreme for all eternity+^_^+

LED isn't brighter than normal halogen lamps, it's just whiter and more annoyingly blinding even in daytime as the spectrum of light they emit isn't blocked by many sunglasses. In all seriousness anyone considering installing these on their conventional non projector equipped cars better be prepared for oncoming traffic to flash their high-beams at them.

He probably means a few feet of relevant reaction time. Seeing downroad 500 feet at 25 mph (36 feet/s) gives you 13 seconds to react. Different than 60 mph (88 feet/s) giving you 5 seconds to react. Idk I'm grasping at straws.

Please stop advertising these bulbs. They are not DOT approved and are illegal to use in a reflector type headlamp. There's no cutoff line, so someone using them is blinding other drivers. Just look at an Acura MDX using LED headlamps and you'll see how well defined is the cutoff line. This is the difference of a headlamp unit engineered from the ground up for the use of LEDs vs a headlamp that has been engineered to use another type of lamp.

This is not DOT Legal. The increased glare is BLINDING to other drivers. As an optometrist, I strongly encourage you to change back to halogens that are properly in focus in that housing if you plan to drive it on the street. This is 100% illegal to use on the road.

Your inspector is a fool and a charlatan. Here's the DOT Law: www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?node=se49.6.571_1108 S6.5.3.4 Replaceable bulb headlamp markings. S6.5.3.4.1 The lens of each replaceable bulb headlamp must bear permanent marking in front of each replaceable light source with which it is equipped that states either: The HB Type, if the light source conforms to S11 of this standard for filament light sources, or the bulb marking/designation provided in compliance with Section VIII of appendix A of 49 CFR Part 564 (if the light source conforms to S11 of this standard for discharge light sources). Also: www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?385476-Yes-another-LED-Headlight-conversion-question&p=4440310&viewfull=1#post4440310 Also: blogs.findlaw.com/law_and_life/2012/06/are-blue-xenon-hid-headlights-legal.html Your bulbs do not have the DOT markings, and they are not DOT legal in the USA. You are breaking the law, and furthermore endangering others lives by reducing their visibility with your glare producting nonsense. Trust me when I say this is HIGHLY illegal, and worse as an SAE mechanic you are promoting such nonsense because you probably got the product at a discount or free. Scotty, I like your channel, but you need to understand this is not just "bad" or "improper" this is LAW. You can and will be cited for this, as will others.

LED lights "from the factory" are DOT legal. However, what Scotty is doing above is a retrofit and change of light source inside a reflector housing not made for this new light source. As a result, there is increased glare. Please read the candlepowerforums and www.danielsternlighting.com/ for reference GulfVet.

Stock LED even in halogen light are different. LEDs are mounted on the top of the housing, not in center. You shouldn’t put LEDs in headlight designed for filament bulb, it causes terrible glare, even when you think its setup properly. Over here is Europe is rightfully illegal to do the swap. You shouldn’t make your driving safer by blinding others and making their driving less safe.

In the civilized world, aftermarket LED lights are not road legal for a reason. It doesn't really matter if you see better when you blind everyone coming your way. No I'm not. The nature of the LED "bulbs" where light only emits from 2 or 3 sides makes light go everywhere in a non projector lens headlight. This will blind oncoming traffic. These type of halogen headlights are NOT suitable for LED replacements

One thing to note is that some cars monitor current usage to tell if a light is burnt out or not functioning properly. As a result, using an LED lamp may trick the car's computer into thinking the light is burnt out. If so, it may be necessary to add a resistor or make other modifications to the lamps. It's more trouble than it's worth, IMO. I'll wait a few more years for LED tech to get better. Awesome channel! First time commenting, but I've been a fan for a long time. :)

Mr. Kilmer you might find it interesting to do a wiring upgrade on your halogens. Voltage drop has a huge impact on lumens for halogens and the old wiring probably has a lot more voltage drop then with new. With a couple extra 20 A relays you can run short big wiring direct to the battery and recover lots of lumens. Some cars of your Toyota's era and before actually ran the wiring from the PDB all to the way to the switch to the interior and then back to the headlight instead of just using the switch as a relay signal. 90s Dodge Neons did this and the switch actually gets hot from the current >.> This would also help these LEDs reach their rated lumens as well.
