Skip the jumper cables and go with a booster pack. Halfway decent ones can be picked up for cheap at an auto parts store or Walmart and you won't be sitting there waiting for someone to offer you a jump start. And if you're in an empty parking lot or parking garage with no one around, you're SOL. Just hook up two clamps on the jumper pack to your dead battery, turn a switch and you're good to go. Just remember to plug it into an AC outlet once a month to make sure it's got a full charge.

Hey Scotty I would like to add something to that list. Two more things you should have: 1 quart of your car's oil 1 quart of Automatic Transmission fluid Auto transmission fluid is obviously for the transmission, but it can also be used in power steering and (in small amounts) to top off your oil. If you are dangerously low on oil, I've been told it is ok to use some ATF until you can get more oil, but its still smart to keep a quart of oil in your trunk as well. Other tools I like to have: Volt meter Basic ratchet set Small wrench set Couple of screwdrivers A funnel Paper towels or napkins Zipties Ziplock bags A phone charger I drive an old car, so some of this is a must-have for me.

I'd also keep a basic socket set with common English/metric sockets, and if you have a truck, keep a spare fan belt or serpentine belt with you (perhaps keep an old belt as a spare just in case the belt does break, you'll have a spare on hand and with the socket/ratchet set you can usually install them pretty easily).

ESCAPE TOOLS!!! One guy told me he spent 2 weeks in a hospital BC he took too long to break out of a caddy with smoking wires under the dash...power doors and windows were dead of course due to electrical fail...he finally kicked out glass, but not easily enough! He hates all power locks & windows now. Also you need a blade to cut your shoulder strap and belt, especially if there's a gas flow going on after a wreck and you can't get unstrapped. Think you left some things out Scotty....and water and food enough for being broke down, isolated, or in a major traffic holdup.

Hi Scotty love the videos, and your way of thinking, Not sure about carrying so much stuff in the back of your car though. With proper and regular maintenence you cam do without most of it. Don't forget to tie the stuff down so it doesn't kill you on impact.

@Joseph9536 oh, yes you can . There are still jacking points on the suspension system, and small floor jacks like mine will fit on the jack area that factory jacks fit on.
@pssst39 жыл бұрын
The tools that Scotty listed make sense although I don't know that I want to carry a floor jack with me. Most are heavy and bulky if rated for your vehicles weight. I would assume that any mechanically capable owner would keep a set of basic hand tools in his vehicles at all times. I'd add some things, starting with a prepared driver who has practiced backing up his car and changing a flat tire at home, and read the Maintenance Section of the Owners Manual for the car. I wouldn't rent or borrow a vehicle if it lacked that manual in the glove box., and I'd flag the index page of the Maintenance section, which shows the jacking points, fuses, lamps and fluids to use, and describes the safe methods for towing the vehicle. I would add a dedicated non activated burner phone and dc adapter. By law, all cellphones sold in the US must be able to call 911 without activation. You are more likely to be hurt, or get hurt yourself at a roadside emergency than at home. Your health is more important than your car. It should contain a first aid kit, including a basic manual, splints, elastic bandages, 4 or 6 inch square dressings, gauze, peroxide and betadine cleaner. Major injuries should be immobilized while waiting for assistance,minor ones cleaned and covered. Getting the lug nuts off is probably the hardest part of changing a flat tire. Factory lugnut wrenches are barely functional. A good quality folding crossbar lug nut wrench, or a telescoping breaker bar wrench with the correct size socket. is far superior. A car of TPMS rated flat inflater is often adequate and simpler. A piece of heavy cardboard or thin plywood under any jack will help stabilize it on less than ideal surfaces. A rain poncho , a blanket and a small tarp can help you get through an emergency service cleaner and in more comfort. Waterless hand cleaner and paper towels, for cleaning your hands after you tear the gloves that have been deteriorating in your trunk for years. Some double-bagged granola bars to give you an energy boost through a stressful energy draining situation, and a bottle of water to keep you hydrated. For your own vehicle, a set of replacement fuses.

Wouldn't help with a mechanic in the back, because if you don't have the right tools and items, you'll be stranded anyway. Another good thing to have for long trips is some oil, especially if your car is a bit old. On my car the oil return holes are clogged causing it to burn a little bit, so it needs to be topped once in a while. And should you get low on oil, you can fill it up and make it to the store to buy some more oil without blowing up the engine on the way.

A cheap Stanley socket set 10mm-19mm, Harbor Freight combo wrenches. 10 in 1 screw driver. LED flash light. Toilet paper. Flares. Cigarette lighter. Paper towels. The old belt from my last belt change. A 3/4" to 1/2 " hose adapter & hose clamps. Water. Coolant. #4 AWG 20 foot long jumper cables. MREs. Scrap building wire. A fuse assortment. Sometimes I keep an old S&W model 29 .44 Magnum in an old tool box. A good knife. Slip joint pliers. Thermostat. Radiator cap. Gas can. Some old carpeting, and a large screwdriver/pry bar. A US Army entrenching tool. A Hi Lift Jack (sometimes). A ratchet and a couple of extensions. I also put a full sized spare in my Nissan Sentra. One will actually fit in the recess in the trunk. New GM cars don't even have a place to put a spare tire! I also usually carry an inverter, a Coleman Air Station tire inflator, and some plug repair kits. If your going to keep brake fluid in your car buy a new, unopened container. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture. Moisture will also lower the boiling temp of the brake fluid. Brake fluid also absorbs air, so putting brake fluid from an open container in your reservoir means putting air into your system.

@JustShleem8 жыл бұрын
David U That'll help unless you have a car with TPMS, it'll (usually) ruin the sensors, the tire inflator or a small 12v compressor is best for newer cars equipped with TPMS

Have you had issues? It hasn't ruined the sensors in my 2012 Kia Sorento
@JustShleem8 жыл бұрын
David U Nope, but only because I stay far away from the stuff, the propellant in fix a flat is also a polymer and when released from the can it has a chemical reaction that allows it to gel up into an epoxy like substance and seal small holes, but the result is pretty acidic and must be cleaned from the rim ASAP to prevent damage, some tire shops will refuse to work with tires that have it in there, others charge an extra fee to clean it out and it can affect the bead seal when putting on a new tire if not properly cleaned, you're much better off with a plug kit and an inflator, but that's just my 2 cents, cheers!

Isaiah Gonzales I get your reasoning. Also, they don't work if they are cold. So if you are stuck of the road and you only have that you will have to hold it up to the heater until the stuff inside heats up

I did that one time but there always yelling, making youtube videos and they have a weird fascination for cats. then I always feel guilty leaving them chained outside in the bad weather. Then they always want to eat. A tip I have found is that if you get a trunk monkey it'll keep your mechanic in check but then you have to pay for his therapy. So I got rid of my mechanic and just stick with my monkey even though he knows nothing about cars.

About the fire extinguisher, make sure it's place in the coolest place inside your car. I used to have one in the trunk of my old car. Then one day, when I opened the trunk, it's white powder everywhere. My car was parked under hot summer outdoor. So my lesson learnt.

I keep a Diehard Battery booster in the back of my car, very reliable and well used. I hate having to ask for a jump (even though I also have booster cables) but having a booster allows for 1 person to jump start a car. Just in case I'm in the middle of no where. It also has a 12v plug, better models have a built in inverter and air pump too.

All this stuff weights a lot of weight and can cost a lot of gas money if you have a small car like the celica. But if your taking a long trip then it makes sense to have all these. But for a commute drive many of these things should be left in the garage. But Scotties the expert and I appreciate all the good advise from you. Good mechanic

I keep in my car: Extra oil, extra coolant, extra brake fluid, WD-40(liquid in a bottle), socket set, few different pliers, a manual air pump( I don't like keeping electronics in my car. I live in the west and it can be over 105 degrees outside and even hotter inside the car), a craftsman hydraulic jack my grandfather gave me, a hammer, I have several lighters though I don't smoke, rope, pry bar, a sealed gallon of water, small fishing pack, and a rock in my cup holder. Most of the small items like the hammer, pliers, socket set, and air pump all fit inside the compartment that hold my spare tire. The area underneath that loose flap in the trunk. I keep the rock in my cup holder because I have been in 2 incidents where the vehicle slid off a bridge. Before the vehicle submerges enough to cover a person and increase resistance, I can use it to break a window. I've had to do it once before and I will always keep a rock with me forever.
