Thanks Martin, I watched several videos on this tool and this video of yours was the only one that was comprehensive enough to explain the simple fact that the largest nut next to the red colored body of the machine should be removed before inserting the die. Also you were the only person that described how to adjust the tool to get a greater amount of compression on the nut. This was driving me nuts until your tutorial. Plus you showed the tool in use. Bravo!!!!. Professor! much appreciated.

Yeah I know what you mean! I watched a few other videos as well and one guy did even explain that adjusting nut. And the other guy just put the dye or mandrel whatever it’s called by holding the spring thing down etc. he was just ridiculous. This was a much better video I agree. I think the adjustment should be explained better. I’m pretty sure the millimeter gauge expands the handles greater for larger nuts because more compression is needed. That’s my thought about anyway. But I really think that should be explained in any of these videos.

This is a great video to watch, thank you for making it available to us, you asked (@ 3:20) what the 5mm marking on the scale window means, if I may answer, the scale represents the stroke length, it is important to use shorter strokes for smaller mandrels like M3, 10-24 etc. since these small nuts do not need a lot of torque to crush, shorter strokes for smaller nuts will save the mandrels from stretching too far and breaking/snapping.

It amazes me how many people confuse these Rivnuts (as shown in this video) with Nutserts!!! Original and still widely sold rivnuts are made from aluminum, have a thick flange that gets in the way and tend to suck. Especially in the future when one tries to remove the screw or bolt and the rivnut just spins; now your stuck trying to drill out the fastener PITA!!! Many manufacturers now make multiple different styles to attempt to remedy this problem. Some do a good job like the “keyed” rivnuts or the ones with aggressive knurling under the flange, plus you can now also buy them in steel and stainless steel, which is better, stronger (tends to hold its crimp longer) and more effective. However, if you want something that will always work, use “Nutserts”, the aircraft industry has been using them since WWII, why you ask, because they work, PERIOD!!! Nutserts have always been made of steel and have a very small to negligible flange that will not interfere with your sheet metal panels or whatever. The reason they don’t spin even with the very small exposed flange is because they don’t pinch the sheet metal when installed, instead they swage themselves into the sheet metal creating a very firm grip. Some companies (McMaster-Car) call them “Low-Profile Rivnuts” but they are actually “Nutserts”. Been doing this a long time and have had great success with Nutserts , try them you can’t go wrong!!!!!!

Well if it doesn't "do it like butter", then you will find out what the little gauge is for. The thicker the material is you are putting one in, the less stroke you need to make. First one I ever used, It was adjusted for a full stroke. I guess the sheet metal was too thick. I made the full stroke, with a lot of effort, and it pulled the threads out of the rivet nut! I'm not sure how you are supposed to figure out where to set it. I guess if it is too hard to compress, shorten the stroke.

Great video, I ordered the same one. Question: I am using this to attach a door handle on my camper. It’s a fiberglass solid door. Would this work on attaching to a solid piece?
@jadesluv3 жыл бұрын
Consider adding a steel washer to the back side of the fiberglass attachment point before the rivnut is swaged into place, this will keep the rivnut from pulling through the fiberglass with repeated use. The larger than standard outside diameter washers are called fender washers. Easily available even in stainless steel and in metric sizes. But any washer be it a fender washer or standard size will greatly strengthen the rivnut in softer materials like fiberglass.

First time I saw a product like this was about 50 years ago made by PopRivet. All it was was a shaft like on a PopRivet with a thread on it. You screwed the tool into a rivnut and used a regular pop rivet tool to install it. It was up to you too stop before you broke off the shaft.

Hi martin,snooky back at you like the improvements you always share with us wj owners.ive thought of getting one of those also.seems there is always a bolt hole rusting out somewhere and this is good fix for permant placement for fresh bolt holding to items solidly.im in process of replacing all my injector clips,that dam plastic small lock pieces broke on nearly everyone of them when i took apart to do lifter upgrade.thing is i have chiltons book on repair,but i cant decipher what color of two wires is ground and which one is hot or power signal wire.the book only gives colors of wires.most of them have a green solid wire n a colored with a strip in it.the replacements i bought from rock auto look much more robust and less small parts but wires are red n black.i assume red is+and black is ground-dont want to just wing it and guess because then signal might not be timed for proper firing order.im making male n female spade connection at wire junction with heat shrink over that part for semi permanent fix.just in case the new ones break down the road.can you help on. Wire color and polarity portion.or maybe do a video on such a project maybe on a buddys wj.since you may not need to do on ur own beast!!p.s also my front tweeters are blown and i want something better than infinity replacements.something like jbls or pioneer products.need something shallow thatll fit and jbl only has 3.5 size which may be too big,any leads in right direction would be helpfull.one jeeper to another.love ur tutorials!!snooky pa.

how exactly are you sure that you've pulled the nut far enough to get max strength? Do you simply extend the handles to the max "throw" and squeeze in? I've watched some videos where they "pull" on the nut several times for max crimp, is why I'm asking.... thx

There is that adjustment collar; the farther you adjust , the tighter, it squeeze the nut. The adjustment collar is for different thicknesses of material.

I just installed a number of plus-nuts and I can say with 100% certainty that there is NO NEED for a special installation tool for plus-nuts. Rivnuts may have a little less forgiveness in their installation and plus-nuts are stronger. Some of the dedicated tools actually do an inferior job. A grade 8 bolt, oversized nut and a couple washers combined with a drill or bit driver works perfectly. These things are really soft and I set most with a stainless screw. Just don't over-do it.
