Instead of running a chalk line at the top of the previous shingle, you could create a spacer that you but on the top of the below one and then mark then top of the next shingle you're going to add. seems much faster to line up the top than the bottom.

To save you some trouble on the corners, if you run 2 boards, one on each side of your wall all the way up, overlapping the front over your sides, you can run your shingles into them. If they are thicker then your shims, you can caulk them right to the boards that run the full height of the building. It may save you some time, and it will look nice too!

On the Isle of La Réunion, the shingles are named "bardeaux" and are alternated on the wall like slates on a roof. The next "bardeau" covers the one under by about 20% to 25%, an inch sounds very little, given the size of your shingles.

it depends on your climate and the location of the shingles in relation to the sun, but with a little maintenance you can get a good decade or more out of them. There are also a lot of great methods of protecting the wood that aren’t too expensive.

Yeah, if I didn't mention it...very important.
@trapperman133 ай бұрын
How do you go about overlapping seams? It looked like you were running them straight on top of each other leaving a long seam all the way down the roof/wall for water to get in
@WineberryHill3 ай бұрын
I am careful to start the course with a shingle thats wider or more narrow then the rest of the shingles, thereby ensuring the gaps are staggered.
@turinhorse Жыл бұрын
Question: If all the shingles are the same width, dont all the seam gaps line-up? wouldnt that let water in-between? thanks

How do you do a ridge cap on the roof shingles?
@WineberryHill11 ай бұрын
I've done it different ways. On the greenhouse I used two 16' pressure treated 1"x4" that I cut an angle into each side and nailed together to match the roof peak. On the sauna the angle is pretty slight so I used a single 2"x6" with the peak angle cut out of the bottom/belly side of it.
@nikbolesta2772 Жыл бұрын
I used a similar style of shingles to cover the sides of a 30cm tall raised beds. Right now they are not filled with soil, no wrapping on the inside either and the whole thing rests on some flat stones. Even though no wood touches the floor, the water from nights and rain was enough to let the shingles swell up sothat they pushed each other apart. They started to bend and eventually the force drove the bradnails out of the 2x4's. How do you prevent this? Do I have to use different fasteners? Of course I could leave little gaps to allow for wood expansion, but then you would have a wall or roof that is not waterproof.. What did I do wrong?
@WineberryHill Жыл бұрын
Two thoughts. I use at least 6 nails per shingle, and treating them with boiled linseed oil might reduce swelling.
@markbennett84634 ай бұрын

Fortunately, there are much better sources of food in this particular forest. But the wood can be sealed to discourage them.

What size/length of nails do you recommend? Stainless steel or is galvanized good enough? I have shingles cut, though varying thickness. Thickest is about 3/4 inch. I was just going to use a hammer and not a nail gun so would be looking for loose nails. I was thinking they had to be nails with a head an thus only be used on the upper portion of the shingle so they could be covered up by the next course. I was thinking just using two nails in the center per shingle, one an inch or so below the other so they don't wiggle. But it looks like you're using finishing nails?
@WineberryHill2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think the length matters most at this point. I got a good deal on the 2 1/2" nails I used. I recommend you use as pattern that puts as many as possible into the shingle. They will move.
@readtherealanthonyfaucibyr64442 жыл бұрын
@@WineberryHill Thanks. I'm new to any kind of wood working so I had no idea what type of nails to use. I wanted to use a regular hammer and have been trying to wrap my mind around all the different kinds and lengths and metallic makeup of the nails and what ones are best for the project. It's looking like buying a $200 brad nailer is the best option because I'd be spending a lot of money on "regular" nails. Brad nails for a nailer seem to be a lot cheaper, so over the course of doing my entire garage, my total cost for the nailer and brads will be not that much higher than the cost of doing the whole structure with 5d or 6d headed nails and a hammer.
