Customer didn't want to use Cat cylinder packs with pistons and rods installed in the liners already? Separate pieces means brand new parts verses reman pistons and liners used in assembled packs...pro of packs you get a resized connecting rod with new wrist pin bushing.....but years ago. ...I got a factory pack that had a bent rod in it....engine wouldy turn over right after install....very rare but it did happen

Do you ever put tread protectors on the rod bolts when installing so they don't scratch the crank journals?

Well, these rods don't have studs, so I would have to put them on the bolts while installing the caps, so that doesn't really make sense.

Im always curious, is a out of frame make sense when the Miles top 1 million? New seals on the front structure, rear main, clutch, flywheel.

It’s always better to rebuild an engine out of frame so everything can be checked and all seals replaced. Doing a in-frame always has a risk.

@AdeptApe3 ай бұрын
Pretty common during a rebuild or if you lost a head gasket
@johngoldsmith66293 ай бұрын
Current guidelines for counterbore, Blown head gasket, counterbore block, replace all head bolts and spacer plate, 1st rebuild if greater than 750,000 miles or 15,000 hours, 2nd rebuild regardless of miles or hours.

Seeing you put the connecting rods in without checking bearing clearance with plastigage was at first a little concerning. However I do have to respect the fact that you have done this many times and I have done it zero times. Checking it by feel must be something that comes with experience. Also, are those rod bolts one time use? If you wanted to check the rod bearing clearance, could you just torque the bolts down without going the 90 deg? It does seem like plastigaging the bearings on your back with oil dripping on your face may be a little extreme. I have put a few smaller engines together and I don’t know that I would have been comfortable putting them together without verifying bearing clearance.
@johngoldsmith66293 ай бұрын
Very rare you need to check bearing clearance on a Cat crankshaft. That is factory and with factory bearings. And when checking bearing clearance, you cannot use a impact to turn the fastener. Even OS, US or OS-US. as long as Cat milled both parts. Now how do you check main bearing clearance with the engine in the frame?
@markm00003 ай бұрын
Plastigauge isn’t very good anyways. If you’re worried about clearances just put a dial indicator on the rod cap and tap it back and forth.
@Jethrosgarage3 ай бұрын
At the Cat AMD I work for (Authorized Marine Dealer) we are told NOT to separate Cat cylinder packs... aye aye sir! But I don't like it as how do you know the wrist pin clips are properly installed, and the rings are spaced correctly? But we are told to o ring up the liners, and shove the whole assembly in, ka-chunk!
@AdeptApe3 ай бұрын
Well I've done them both ways. It's faster to put the assembled packs together, but harder as you have to fight the rod, rod bearings, seals and the entire heavy assembly all at once.
@johngoldsmith66293 ай бұрын
I cannot say in the marine world. But on truck engines, I was in on a phone conference from Cat. We was told to check liner projection with out oring seals. I ask the question on why is the pack assembled and the piston not in a piston pack like the smaller engines. No answer.

I've done so many, I could do them in my sleep. Do you have the tooling to cut the lower counter bore for the inserts?
@AdeptApe3 ай бұрын
No, never seen it done before, but would be cool to learn how to do them for the customers.
@peteengard99663 ай бұрын
@@AdeptApe I think the last one I did was on a 3406B many years ago. I believe Kent Moore made the tooling and inserts. Used to do Cummins and Cats upper and lower counter bores. That's before the PEEK engines. Cat sent me to PEEK school. Thank God they didn't last long.
@johngoldsmith66293 ай бұрын
@@AdeptApe Only way I know to cut them is out of the frame. The machine/tool sets up on the line bore so the cut is correct. The insert is installed like the cast iron counter bore shim. You put bearing mount on the insert and drive it in with the tool and hammer.
@peteengard99663 ай бұрын
@@johngoldsmith6629 That's the beauty of the tooling. Set up is done off the top deck and lined up with the top of the bore. The cutting plate had the cutting tool and only cut down the thickness of the insert. The insert was shrunk down in dry ice and still need to be driven in with either red or green Loctight. You really have to clean the chips up and make sure the crank was out of the way. Dario Diesel had the tooling for Cat and Cummins for the upper and lower counter bores.
