Mandrake adopted it just before that, and I believe SuSE did the same. At the time mentioned they were still hanging on to some legacy system they ported from MacOS 9.X.

Ok, I'm using ZorinOS (think it is also based on ubuntu) and had something to print, but just didn't want to, it threw out errors all lights blinking, as there wasn't any paper and ink, so tried to stop to see which ink cartridge is empty -> nothing. And yeah, it also was saying the print is completed even though nothing was printed. So first I removed/purged cups and deleted the etc/cups directory. And reinstalled it. Just reinstalling cups wasn't enough. Needed to also install cups-daemon ! Well now it should work you'd think, as I the computer sees the printer. Nope, it doesn't. Manually searched for printer in the printer gui and to my surprise it finds it, but with a 2 at the end! Now it works. With deleting cups I probably deleted all the ppd files, even though I tried manually installing them, but failed. It was weird as the printer Epson Stylus SX110 has a scanner installed too and just copying documents worked fine.

It's seems like it so simple until you have office with tens of models of printers and MFU of many manufacturers like canon, hp, kyocera, samsung, brother, with complete different level of linux support. For example, what about two-sided printing (duplex) (which have 2 modes whether it portrait or album, it makes me crazy on windows), scan and duplex scanning, and colors may be incorrect, and network printing and, especially, scanning, and so on... Now more and more relatively modern printers have some kind of linux support, but older ones ... depends.. they offer don't have win10 support, because manufacturer just forget about it after 5-7 years after launch

When working with HP Printers, the easiest way to guarantee a clean, working install (IMHO) Use this command after installing HPLIP:: sudo hp-setup -i It allows you to choose what type of printer (USB, NETWORK, PARALLEL) * If it is a Network Printer, you can feed it the IP directly :: sudo hp-setup -i nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn -g * This also lets you NAME the printer and designate a Location / Description * It allows you to configure the FAX information if it is an AIO device It will download the driver if required (especially important for certain AIO Printer) * That is very important when trying to setup the scanner on the AIO device For an AIO, if you do it this way, it will automatically prompt you to download the specific Scanner Plugin to the HPLIP driver when you set up your preferred scanning utility.
