That should only be the case for the rolling distributions, or any distributions that are explicitly identifies as such like Debian Unstable. That shouldn’t be the case any distribution that tries to be mainstream.

Back in my Gentoo days, about 2007, they made a change to wipe /tmp on each boot. I was essentially using /tmp as a "my documents" at the time, and I was really bummed after I updated, when I looked and it was wiped. Lol

Arch is *THE* distro where the news can literally make or break your system, so this is actually a useful command for anyone wanting to use it. Personally, I will continue to use almost anything *but* Arch and other rolling releases. Other than maybe Tumbleweed, which seems to be more of a middle ground when it comes to rolling. I want a system that actually runs. I value stability and reliabilty in my machines, and Arch is anything *but* that.

Gentoo is a distro for people who enjoy wasting time. The 5% performance increase you get is almost immediately wasted in install/compile times.
@terrydaktyllus132013 күн бұрын
@@littlek3000 "Gentoo is a distro for people who enjoy wasting time." I have always enjoyed my past 21 years with Gentoo. For your view that that time has been wasted on my part makes the mistaken assumption that I hold any relevance to your opinions. I do not. Therefore that comment was a waste of your time also. "The 5% performance increase you get is almost immediately wasted in install/compile times." "The 5% performance increase" is entirely meaningless unless you can state what that performance increase is in - for example, is it CPU performance? Or better RAM usage? Maybe it's kernel optimisation that makes a Gentoo system perform better even though those same optimisations might be applied to kernels in other versions of Linux? That simple (meaningless) statement on your part simply tells me you've never used Gentoo and are therefore entirely reliant on "what a bloke in the pub told me" memes to tell me what someone else told you is the case, rather than based on your own experience. That too was more time wasted on your part, and I would argue that my "wasted time" on Gentoo is probably used more constructively learning a bit about Linux anyway. So, tell me. How do you think that went for you over all?
@terrydaktyllus132013 күн бұрын
@@littlek3000 @littlek3000 "Gentoo is a distro for people who enjoy wasting time." I have found my 21 years (and counting) with Gentoo to be both fun and productive. A complete stranger on the Internet considering those years as wasted would be validated if I put any relevance on those opinions. I do not, therefore the time writing such comments in the first place is also wasted. "The 5% performance increase you get is almost immediately wasted in install/compile times." And where would one believe this 5% performance increase manifests itself, if at all? CPU performance? RAM usage? Kernel optimisations? Or just some another "Internet meme" for people in the "Hive Mind" to parrot incessantly over and over again, given that is the only thing upon which one can make such a statement whilst clearly lacking any personal experience in Gentoo itself. I've used it for 21 years and even I wouldn't make such a profoundly silly statement.

All roads technically lead to Linux from Scratch but that is truly wizard shit 😂
@terrydaktyllus132013 күн бұрын
@@TheJosephAller The problem with Linux From Scratch is that once you have built it then there's "nowhere else to go" with it. I built it once, back around 2002 and it's a wonderful learning experience that I recommend every Linux user does at least once. But with no package management there's nothing else to do with it, apart from making your own package manager and therefore your own distro on it. That LFS experience lead me to Gentoo in 2003 and I've been there ever since.

@@tristen_grant That's true, but you can say the same for any distro.. They all work great. But Arch is known for breaking with their updates and AUR, etc. I just don't understand the appeal of it. I'm sure it works great for a basic minimalist setup with a 1080p screen.. but I have odd ball TV's and wireless keyboard, on strange hardware with HDMI and VGA outputs for video..etc.. You have to literally become a computer programmer to get my setup to work with Arch based distros....... Or you take 3 minutes to setup Nobara and all the problems are already thought of ahead of time and the fixes are built right into the install. Arch works great, until something doesn't work-- and then you're in for a battle.
