In this video we install an upgraded reinforced skid plate on the 2019 Golf R. This is an OEM plate from an Golf ALLTRACK. Most MQB cars have a plastic oil pan. The factory belly pan is weak and does not cover the oil pan. To protect that plastic oil pan, we install a reinforced belly pan. This is a simple install with a new pan, a few bolts and 2 brackets. We also do some math and torture testing on the Alltrack Belly Pan. Thanks to ShopDAP.com for providing the parts, and putting together a kit for us.

Great video and product. I was skeptical at first. Dont know if id ever buy a newer VAG, but id probably do a combo of metal oil pan and the Alltrak skid plate. Luckily I can still stick to the old MK1/MK2 trick of welding a 1/4" plate of steel onto my B5 Passat wagon oil pan. The B5 has a long list of quirky engineering but I love it.

I love this video and the product the was being demonstrated. I have a MK7 and was looking for alternatives to protect the pan. One issue though. As I clicked to link to actually buy the product. I seen that it was going for $423 versus buying a steel oil pan for $1XX and maybe around $200 installation. As a regular Consumer I shop around for what’s the best costly yet affective alternative. I would be saving around $100 buy just going with a steel oil pan and not having to replace the drain bolts every oil change. Again I love the skip plate and and the video but the price is just a little up there for that particular part. If it was around $2XX something, then I would’ve put in a order right after the video.

I work at a Hyundai dealership and there's a transmission mount behind the oil pan on the Sonatas, Elantras, and Accents that should be circular but is in most cases ground flat by customers repeatedly bottoming the car out. The good thing about this though is that the mount sits lower and protects the oil pan from getting damaged in most cases. We call them the buzz cut mounts. There really should be a factory replacement interval for 'em.

Just did this on my mk7.5 R and ran into an issue with the fitment of the passenger-side bracket. Aligning the “little tab” on the top of the bracket made it impossible to get the 2 lower bracket holes to align correctly with the belly pan. It’s almost as if the hole for the tab in the chassis should have been drilled slightly lower. Ultimately, had to bend the tab out of the way and mount the bracket with just the bolt alone.

Looking at it, the Alltrak skid plate covers more of the bottom of the engine where more air can get up into causing more turbulence/drag. I'm no expert just an educated guess.

Drives me crazy when owners remove the belly pans or cut holes in them to change the oil. To me it's just plain laziness. When doing an oil change it's a good time to get in there and check everything. So don't be lazy pull the belly pan and inspect.

The problem with the Alltrack skid plate is that you have to take it off to get to the oil pan drain. Somewhat easy to do on a lift, but harder to do when all you have are jackstands.

@HumbleMechanic

I fee where your coming from on the heat. The weight is a non factor for me and I’d say 99.99% of MQB cars. The heat side is something I’ve thought about. The only thing that has me not really worried is that it’s a factory part. So if it was an issue it would be an issue on all the Alltrack cars.

So, you will need to take it off when you want to do a full oil change (like also replacing the oil plug which is a cheap addition to the oil change kits)? Will you need to also get an oil extractor too if the case? Also "Plastic" to describe what the oil pan is made of makes it sound chintzy, when really it's a very durable composite. I don't know of anyone who has had issues with it.

Just installed this today. What's the part number for the hex head bolts that you used on the brackets in the front instead of the torx style that come with the kit? I could not get the torx style tightened up properly. Will be swapping them out with hex heads the next time I drop the cover to change the oil. Is there more than one version of the belly pan? I have a '17 GTI S and got the belly pan that I installed on my car from a local guy who said that he bought all of the underside protection parts for some Mk7 model not available in the US from a European source. The pan that I have doesn't flex like the one in your video. A couple weeks ago I hit something (hidden under snow) about half the width of the road on the left side and maybe an inch or so taller than the underside of the car. That broke a bunch of the plastic bits behind the left-side bumper cover including the core support and cracked the intercooler. The left side of the belly pan(including the vertical support) moved back an inch or two, which ripped all of the metal eyelets out of the rear of the belly pan. I am looking for a replacement belly pan and after watching your video I am concerned it might not be the same as what I am replacing.

BTW, I am a stage rally official who uses my GTI in my duties, including course checks. Earlier this year, on a fresh (not-yet compacted) gravel road, my car managed to bring in enough rocks through the cooling hole on the belly pan that the inside bottom of the pan filled with rocks. The rocks filled the gap between the belly pan and the oil pan. Then I went over a bump that pressed up on the belly pan and --crack-- went the plastic oil pan. I now have a steel one on my car. But I managed to drive on gravel stage rally toads for 5 years before that happened.
