Awesome, so happy to hear that you found this video useful! Before this video, I had created a poorly edited video (shot/edited entirely on my cellphone) where my son and I found an empty Arcade cabinet by a dumpster. We then modified it and installed a Raspberry Pi 3 in it. We had to build several missing pieces, if you want to watch that video here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioWZmnl5jKhola8 Towards the end, I show the insides of the cab with the Pi. Again, poorly done video but may also be useful to you.

Well I have it all up and running! I found a ROM that works and this has been an amazing project and learning experience. There are lots of videos out there but yours took me from scratch to a working little bartop machine. Now if I can get my Mother in law off of it to play it for fun instead of testing I’m all set. Back in the 70’s and 80’s she had a pizza joint near a local High School. She had Pac-Man, space invaders and asteroids. She said these three machines generated 3 times what the pizza sales were a day! Now they are making a high comeback!

@@davidgood2598 Sure, basically it's just the inverse of what you did to get the files on the system. Just browse \ etropie on your network, go to the shared folder, select the file(s), right-click the list and select Delete. For the Roms that don't work, make sure you get the right romset for the emulator you're using.

@@davidgood2598 The system+game ROM that you downloaded must be compatible with the emulator you want to run it under. It really isn't hard to create your own Arcade cab and RetroPie has improved a bit since this video. There are other distributions such as Recalbox (easier to setup), Batocera (more emulators than Recalbox) and of course RetroPie. You can learn more about each here: wagnerstechtalk.com/rpi4gaming . Anyone of them are great to use on an Arcade cabinet.

Helped me a bunch. Where you configure D pad, is that where you would move the arcade joystick up left down right. It also seems once the buttons are configured they are universal in their function game to game. I’m almost ready to burn all this into a retro cab and gathering as much info as possible before the big smoke check.
@WagnersTechTalk5 жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear it was helpful! Yes, the d-pad directions are the same for a dpad or a joystick controller. If you're not 100% ready to take the plunge in building a full-size cabinet, you could also consider the two options below. The 2nd option is likely the easiest route. All parts that you put into it (sticks, buttons, pi, etc) could then be re-installed in a cabinet once you get everything working how you want it. This would provide you with the practice/confidence before diving into a larger project. Just something that may help. That said, I just dove in head first myself so that way is fine too :D If you have a 3d Printer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gpLRYYuVj5udY8U If you don't have a 3d printer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/baLTf4ysacyKrJI

@heeder777 haha, I'm right there with you buddy! Both links above will help with the joystick wiring, you can also use the button sheet on the link in the description if your buttons light up (explained in the video, totally optional if you want to use my label set). Be sure to pay close attention to the wiring from the mfgr. I bought two sets from the same mfgr. and found they changed the wiring scheme on me (swapped sides). It threw me for a loop when the buttons didn't light up. Why they did that, no idea. But should go pretty smooth for you. Also, if you use the labels, apply them first or you'll have to disassemble everything and re-assemble.

I have a Raspberry Pi 4, model b, running a Retropie build for the Legends Ultimate, which has multiple analogue controls, two player controls, ect. I'm having trouble getting the "tab" function to work. I have a USB keyboard in the Pi, but every time I hit TAB, nothing happens. I can't get out to the mame menu, to set controls, for a given game. Any thoughts? The keyboard is in one of the USB 2 ports.
@WagnersTechTalk3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what emulator the image you're using is, but my guess is that somewhere down the road someone re-mapped the TAB key. Assuming it's mame4all that you're using, you can access the \configs share (over a network), rename the mame.cfg (located here: \\[host or ip]\configs\mame-mame4all to mame.config.ori - so you can restore it if this doesn't work). Then, restart emulation station and re-map the buttons. This may work, but without knowing exact emulator you're using only a guess. At the least, this may give you an idea of something to try to fix the problem. Hope it helps!

@@WagnersTechTalk Well, I'm slowly discovering there are several emus on the collection. I've noticed a few games did respond to tab, but most won't. Oddly, Star Wars won't respond to tab. You're very welcome Carl, glad it was helpful! You typically only setup the controls once, but you can customize each individual game too if you need to. For example, if you have a dual-stick setup and want to play Robotron 2084, you can setup the left to move and the right to shoot in all 8 directions. Also, if you use lrMame, after you configure the buttons+stick in RetroPie, you won't have to do anything more unless you need to customize the controls.

Thanks for your great tutorial. I have a hardware-related question: is a fan required to cool the internal components?
@WagnersTechTalk5 жыл бұрын
You're very welcome! If you wind up overclocking, which I personally never do, a fan is a must. Otherwise adding the heat sinks usually cool it just fine. If you have a really small enclosure for the Pi then the heat can build up during high-cpu utilization. In my cabinets, I simply use standoffs with no enclosure (aside from the cabinet itself). If you ever see a small yellow lighting bolt in the upper-right, it means a heatsink or a fan is likely a good idea to avoid overheating. I know Amazon sells the heatsinks separately, if you need them and your kit didn't include them.
@jabetitbasen5 жыл бұрын
@@WagnersTechTalk Thank you for your answer. From what I understand the fan can be useful when emulating 3D systems, or when we talk about N64, Dreamcast, PSP or PSone. If you limit yourself to the old 2D consoles the passive heat sinks I found in the basic kit may suffice. I hope I understood correctly!☺

I think you're probably spot-on in your understanding. Most of the games I play are not graphically intensive, usually the classics (80s early 90s). But I have played Virtual Fighter and some of the other more intensive games as well without any overheating issues. That said, it could be that I just never played them long enough to cause overheating. At the beginning of the games, the screen output is all garbled before it loads to the normal game. Is that common for all games? Is there a way to fix that?
@WagnersTechTalk4 жыл бұрын
You're likely talking about what you see at the beginning of loading Galaga, Ms Pac-Man, etc. That is definitely normal. It's the same thing you would see on the actual arcade machine when you power it on for the first time. You'll see the same in NeoGEO and others. Nothing to be concerned about. Remember, as an emulator it's "pretending" to be the original hardware. As such, the emulated chipsets are checking the (emulated) RAM/CPU chips. What you see on boot will vary from game to game. These are things you wouldn't remember back in the day unless the power cut out and came back on while you were standing at the machine. Hope this helps answer your question.

@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
I can't tell you where to find ROMs, all I can say is google is a good start. For the games I showed in this video, they were included in my 60-1 Arcade I purchased several years ago. However, there are plenty of sites that carry them. You could always setup a Virtual Machine (Virtual Box is free), download from there (Linux, ReactOS, etc.) and virus scan what is downloaded from the host to make sure it's all safe before copying to you're main drive. Just one of many possibilities.

Here's the problem that I'm having. It seems to be twofold. 1) Right here.13:30 It only show 0 and then Hidden ESSID. Those are my only two options. 2) Apparently if I shut off Raspberry Pi (I have Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+) for any reason, or if it asks me to reboot and I say yes, the HDMI signal is lost and I can't get it back unless...I repeat the process of flashing the image. So I'm stuck in a loop here. Can't get wifi, can't turn off Pi or else I'll have to flash it again, but I can't go further so I'll basically be stuck with the menu screen anyway.

@@WagnersTechTalk When I go to wifi it gives me that prompt to set the country code, that 0 and Hidden ESSID comes *after* its been set. Plus again the whole can't turn off the Raspberry Pi and then turn it back on. Out of frustration with RetroPie I looked for alternatives and found RecalBox. I haven't had any of the problems I mentioned with RetroPie, in fact I've been playing it non-stop since I discovered it and flashed it. Wifi works, shut down and reboot works, easier to add games and BIOS...I guess RecalBox is just more user friendly and RetroPie is a bit of a learning curve. I don't know. But the ultimate goal was an all-in-one game system that I can hook up to a TV via HDMI with my Raspberry Pi 3. I have that now, just through RecalBox. Maybe if I ever get Raspberry Pi 4 I'll try it again. But for now, I'll stick with this. Thanks for the great vid. I am in the process of seeing if I want to go through all the hassle of doing a Retropie build and your video is helping. I do have a question in regards to doing some arcade emulating. On Github they are saying the recommended emulator for raspberry Pi version 2 or 3 is lr-mame2003. I am wondering why you used mame4all instead of the recommended?I also read that it is best to us a whole ROM set for MAME instead of individual ROMs but I really don't want 4700 ROMs on my system just for arcades. Is there something I am missing there since it seems that you just dragged in 3 ROMs. Thanks for your time.
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback! The ROM set I have is one I've had for several years. Some of them don't run under lr-mame2003 and have found they all play fine under mame4all (with the exception of 2 or 3). Also, not mentioned in this video but in hindsight I should have, if you want to play any games that utilize a trackball (i.e. centipede, milipede, arkanoid, marble madness, etc.) you'll want to use advanced mame (folder mame-advmame). The controls there will have to be programmed slightly differently to use the joystick (up/down select in the UI will need to be mapped). The emulator set you pick will depend mostly on the type of game you're trying to play and the ROMs you have. I've had mixed results with rom-sets and why I use mame4all -mostly. That said, you'll certainly want to know how to map they buttons/joystick in this manner regardless of the emulator you choose. It took a bit of trial an error on my part and why I decided to make this video to help others get there a little faster.
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
btw-I only moved 3 roms during the video as to not overwhelm viewers. I wanted to keep it simple and used some of the more popular roms to demonstrate. There was nothing to prevent me from dropping in thousands of ROMs in, just wanted to demonstrate how it's done and how to get them running. You'll definitely love it when you get it all setup. This video ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioWZmnl5jKhola8 ) shows the actual arcade cabinet my son and I restored. It was basically an empty cab, we had to refurb the chasis, build a control panel, add a monitor and RPi. It worked out well, I play it almost daily. I've also built a few from scratch. My next project I'm planning is a VPin (I'm getting bold now - lol)
@RossLager6 жыл бұрын
That makes perfect sense and thanks for keeping it simple. I guess the thing that confused me with only the 3 ROMs was about what I read about Parent/Child ROMs. It said that some ROMs(Child) needed other ROMs(Parent) to be able to work. I was under the impression that you needed multiple ROMs all in the same folder to make it work as to not separate the link. Maybe the Parent/Child links are inside of the .zip files and that is why they are not to be unzipped unlike ROMs for consoles? I will have to check out that video for sure. I had the same thought of refurbishing a used cabinet if I can get it for the right deal.
@RossLager6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the response. It does seem that a trick to the arcade emulating is finding a ROM that works with an emulator so that makes sense to stay with what works. I appreciate you going through the button mapping process for the arcade because that was another area I was getting stuck on. I am planning on setting this all up on arcade controls only and didn't know if all the emulators kept the same controls are needed to be remapped per emulator. One question about this i do have is, and i apologies if I missed it in the video, but once you set the controls for PACMAN were those setting now in all of the ROMs in MAME emulator? I probably have tons of more questions but I can figure them out in time and to not unload everything on to you lol Thanks for taking the time to educate me on this.
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
Certainly! Happy to help. When you configure the controls for MAME, they can be setup for all games or the current game. There is an option in the menu. I typically setup a global configuration for all games- how I would expect most games to be played. For those custom scenarios, Robotron 2084 for instance, I will create a game-specific configuration. With Robotron, I have the left joystick mapped to move the character and the right joystick to fire in the direction pointed. This is one game that is near impossible to play with a single joystick and happens to be one of my favorites! There are other examples, but this is one specific scenario that comes to mind. Another reason why dumping 4k roms into a folder can be a bit challenging. I like picking specific ones I want available. There are some ROMs that are dependent on other .zip files. Neogeo.zip is one that is needed to play many games like Street Fighter, Metal Slug, etc. But sometimes there are other dependencies as well. There are some utilities that can scan the archives and report on files that are missing or non-working roms.

I am confused. Which is better? Mame or Final Burn? I keep seeing mixed reviews from everyone online.

I can't say which is better, I only use MAME with RetroPie at the present time. May look at Final Burn in the future, but I can say RetroPie with MAME runs just fine.

After etcher, I take my microSD card out and place it into my rasberrypi, connect an hdmi to it and my laptop, and nothing happens. Am I supposed to use a screen that is not part of a computer? Also, I'm using a phone charger to start my pie,
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
You're laptop should have nothing to do with your RPi setup. You will want to hook the power supply up to the Rpi, make sure you see some lights come on (red led). After that, plug the HDMI cable from the RPi into your TV/Monitor. Make sure you have the correct Input selected (HDMI1..3) and it should boot up. If there is no power to the Rpi, see the video description for one that will work. This should get you up and running :) If this doesn't help, let me know.
@valioma91086 жыл бұрын
@@WagnersTechTalk thank you, I followed the steps, unfortunately, nothing happened on my TV screen. I think the problem is I did something incorrectly during the etcher process. This is supposed to be a gift for my dad so I will be quick and post my update Edit: now my laptop isn't reading my sd card, it's saying "Please insert a disk into SDXC (E:)" when I click on the micro sd card,,,the sd card is brand new from best buy. Anyways, hopefully it loads soon. I plan to start over and redo the entire thing. I'm confused by the whole etcher process. I download RPi, I extract it and I flash the one that is extracted, but how do I know which one is extracted? The icons are identical and my UI looks a little different from the one on the video. Sorry for all the Qs

Let's do this, reformat the microSD card using SD Formatter (Download link: www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html ), make sure you select the correct drive. After formatting, try etcher again by selecting the .img file and the SD Card. If you need to re-download RetroPie, you can get it here: retropie.org.uk/download/ Make sure you select the download that matches your version of the RPi (likely the 2/3 version if you have a RPi 2, 3b or 3b+)

@WagnersTechTalk5 жыл бұрын
The general answer is yes. Most MAME, NES, SNES, GB, GBA, GBC, Sega, PS1, etc. will play fine. Keep in mind, if you're looking to use a RPi 4 Model B, there is no official RetroPie build for the RPi 4 yet. Though, once released it's anticipated that many more games/systems will play well. But, won't know until it's available.

@WagnersTechTalk4 жыл бұрын
This may/may not help. I ran into an issue as well, my WiFi password used a special character and oddly enough that character would never work when using it with the RPi. I wound up simplifying my WiFi password to not include the special character and setup my router to create a separate SSID for 2.4 Ghz (different from my 5Ghz). After doing that, I was able to connect up from the RPi just fine. Probably not the best solution, but the only one I could come up with. Even contacted my Router Mfgr. they said they would get back to me but never called... Please let me know if it helps you!

So what do I do about a rom not loading? i have Galaga (Namco Rev.B) and everytime i launch the game, the screen goes black, and then it goes back to my rom list. it also does this for every game i try, anything you suggest trying?

Sounds like the rom you have doesn't match the emulator. Might try placing the rom in a different folder (lr...) and restart emulation station and see if that corrects it.

i cant seem to get into the mame game settings for some reason my tab key wont work with the arcade games, the keyboard does work but not in mame any suggestions on how to get it to work or is there alternative to the tab key.
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
I can only assume that the TAB key somehow got re-mapped to something it shouldn't have. Here's what I would recommend, using a Windows box (another assumption), browse to \ etropie\configs\mame\mame4all and rename mame.cfg to mame.cfg.old. Then, once that is done restart emulationstation (or the Pi), then try again. It "should" detect the tab key, if it doesn't then the tab key on your keyboard isn't working and you'll need to use a different USB keyboard or repair it. Let me know if this helps, it's the best I can think of based on what little I see above. If it does fix it, you'll want to go back in and delete mame.cfg.old as it's not needed anymore, However, if this doesn't fix it you can always restore it -if needed.
@rodneysmith79796 жыл бұрын
thanks , I have tried the suggestion but it didn't work , I swapped it out for another keyboard and it does the same thing, I did notice my keyboard lights didn't come but I was able to log into pi, it seems to change after I updated to latest version of the software .

hi I get rom errors how do I fix them also how can I make my screen bigger on my tv when gaming thanks
@WagnersTechTalk6 жыл бұрын
ROM errors are related to either missing files or the dump isn't compatible with the emulator you're using. To fix that, you'll want to get another set of roms or try them on a different emulator. Another (easier) option is to download an image that has everything pretty much ready to go. Here's a video that was created more recently that might help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJa8Zn2VhNJkkKs

The image you mention is local to your computer, so I'm unable to see it. I've only used RetroPie on Raspberry Pi's so I'm not going to be much help to you, honestly. MAMEUIFX32 is for Windows, RetroPie is sitting on top of Raspian which is Linux. There are several emulators pre-installed that run under RetroPie, running games for nearly every major console platform from ~2002 and below. @WagnersTechTalk4 жыл бұрын
Personally, I would get x2 Raspberry Pi's and setup each one to perform separate tasks. One for RetroPie, one for the NAS. Depending on your needs you may want to be able to copy stuff from RetroPie to the NAS which you wouldn't be able to do with 1 Pi (easily). In most cases, the NAS is the one thing you always want available.
