Bartop Arcade w/ Raspberry Pi

Thanks for this video. I'm building my own arcade cabinet and, after watching a number of these arcade cabinet builds, you are really the only one to focus on the woodworking part of it (which is probably bc most people make these out of MDF, paint them black, and use T Mould on any edges, so the joins aren't really ever noticed/appreciated). Anyway, there are several steps that people rush through (particularly the monitor bezel/mounting part) that I'm really glad you covered at a nice pace.

I really think this is one of the better arcade machine builds on KZbin. Mainly because you used the wood finish which is eighth up my ally. It’s fine with a custom pit job and stickers everywhere but this truly looks like it would sit in any home and not look out of place. Great job 👍🏻

Beautiful job and so good to watch. I made my arcade game out of MDF custom board, no where as nice as your finish. I thought of changing it one day to clear perspex so you can see the working insides, but might be difficult to do joins.

This is, by far, the nicest cabinet I have seen. The methods are as close to DYI as I have seen. The quality of materials is terrific. I want such a cabinet but I want it to double as a PC workstation. This would be for my son who I would want to be able to use this not just for certain gaming but also for his regular computer for homework and the like. To that end, a keyboard/mouse drawer might be the most awesome modification to add. That lowest front-facing panel might have a hinge somehow or perhaps it could be halved where the lower part has the hinge-door where the keyboard and mouse tray would emerge... or maybe no door at all... just a tray with rails.

That thing is gorgeous. I made a bar-top arcade a while back, and now I want to build a full-sized version, or build a base to make the bar-top look like a full-size while it is sitting on it. Also, I put one of those power/switched power ports on mine and it seems to be holding up well so far. The one I got is fused.

Lol yep. I made one 20 years ago when I was in high school by modding a actual arcade cabinet with my own control panel and stopped to use it before I got the t-molding around the control panel. Its had allot of use and has been moved several times and still doesn't have the molding to this day. Now I would just start over and make something allot less deep and use a big lcd vs the 24" crt. I kind of want twin single player sit down cabinets like the Japanese astro city cabinets to play versus fighters in more comfort, run both monitors from one computer for two player games.

Mine has been in the planing stages since 1999. Yours is further along than mine is. I guess I was just waiting for the Pi and LED tvs to come along so that I could build a lighter system. Now I just need a large 3D printer to make the whole cabinet.

Nice job Marc. I really like the USB extensions on the front. I'm adding that to my future builds. Couple of things: The pie can get hot when under heavy loads (e.g. games), so I recommend adding some holes for ventilation and USB cooling fans to move the air. Also, buttons on the side of the cabinet are a really nice addition for pinball games. Unfortunately they need to be mapped for each game in RetroPie but I find they are a fan favorite.

I really just love the plain vanilla look of this. Many would consider it to Conservative but if it has to live in a front room or study it has to blend in and flashy, bright cabinet graphics would look terribly out of place. It is an excellent and classy piece of woodworking as most of these are knocked together in rough fashion from MDF in a boxy fashion and sprayed matt black. Well done and i would definitely have it in my house.

Very nice project! Being an arcade fan and collector I have been puzzled a bit by some of the design choices, but I am sure it will work nicely for your friend. If you consider doing a similar project again, look up about Japanese Sega cabinets button layouts. The buttons for the second player are slightly tilted to allow your wrist to be in line with your hand. Far better for longer playing sessions!

PC based one we built with Blue tooth and WiFi, KB and mouse under the desk for programming etc as well as ports for controllers made from melamine... My close friend did the PC build as he's the smart one out of the two of us, while my primary role was to grunt and carry heavy weights :) I swear it weighs more than my car ! Not to mention the awesome kickback I received on my right hip which left it black down to just above the knee for about a week (micro Jig splitter's installed into the zero clearance plate purchased AFTER the accident) - wish i could show you a picture :) Oh, if you haven't tried the MJ Splitters, the WW has a video on them and they are bloody brilliant, especially on older machines where you have to unbolt the table saw's riving knife/splitter every time you need it removed (which means you get lazy and leave it off ! )

I run that exact power plug on 3 of my arcade boxes. One of them has an entire desktop computer along with speakers and a 24 old LCD monitor and it has never been a problem. It has a fuse in it in case there is ever a surge so the risk is fairly minimal.

...you have given me so many good Ideas and tips; ) I just finished a tabletop cabinet w/riser for my Vectrex to sit in and it came out pretty good for my first basic build. its not as polished, but it looks and works very well for a project done with a 4ftx4ft scrap piece of half inch particle. this isn't something i do all the time, it was just an idea i had after seeing some of the other cabinets, it was a fun build

Great job Marc. well finished. The only thing I would add for a project like this (with wire and computer components) is some ventilation in the back. when you have all this wires together, most likely you will create some heat, and as a fire precaution a good air circulation would be great. PS, I am big fan of you!

I highly recommend, for pre-drilling for circuit boards, that you use a punch to mark, and drill without the board present. It's far safer for the board, and not that hard to do to avoid potential issues.

This looks good but I think I would make a jukebox with the expensive plywood and go with MDF covered with melamine and t-molding for the edge banding. Like they made old arcade games. That way I could have some vinyl stickers printed for the sides and to lay out around the buttons.

Maybe already mentioned, and old so no one will see this, but for getting the joystick centered, you could 3D print a cylinder with an outside diameter of the hole and inside diameter of the joystick shaft. Slip it over the shaft and put the joystick through the hole and it will be perfectly centered.

Loved the project, but a few of those pin-nail operations made me flinch a bit. Found out the hard way this week that it pays to keep your non-gun hand fingers at least two nail-lengths away from the gun tip. Was adding a 1/4 " plywood back into the rear of a new wall cabinet when one of my 18 gauge nails pulled a 180 degree "J" turn and exited the side panel . . . and entered my fingertip Close to an inch deep. Missed the bone and nail, but not by much. Just one more hard-learned word to the wise . . . j-
