Nice job, I dig that color combo. Pro tip - Use 2 M6 (I think, 12mm head), short bolts to pop rotors off the hubs. That's why they have the threaded holes in them. Much easier than beating them with a hammer.

Yeah always a good option. Just had issues in the past with rusted rotors just destroying the threads so I turn on hammer time and go to town now. 🤣

I did the conversion rear parking brake shoes instead of the rotor, with the thinking that a rotor is a more regular wear item and I’d rather have a wide variety of rotor options rather than being tied to a single rotor.

Good way to look at it. Would be a step up if kns ever decides to discontinue the adapters. Honestly my brake shoes were barely worn at 230k miles. Maybe half a mm less than stock if that.

No issues. The surface area is negligible between Stock 2 pot to brembo 4 pot. When bled it requires the same pedal travel and the abs module can operate normally.

Not required for the swap. My wheels would contact my inner trailing arm in the rear due to size and offset, so I use a small spacer for clearance.

As far as the calipers, you can use any of this style sti, but gd is preferable, for the rotors you just need to make sure to get 5x100 style like that from an 04 sti. For the rear you can pick up kns/dba rotors that keep the rear ebrake shoe size, or swap them out for sti ebrake components and use normal rotors. Fastwrx has a huge selection so they make nice rotors like dba 4000's with that Internal drum 🤙

Great, thanks! Is there any real benefit changing the hub to 5x114 over 5x100? Can the 5x114 ever work on 05-09 outbacks? Off the topic Did you and Tanner serve in our military?
@MatlasDI
@MatlasDI Жыл бұрын
No one has figured out a rear hub solution for these cars yet to swap to 5x114. I want to give it a shot in the future and may try to on the outback this next time around, but there isn't an easily available solution. 5x114 hubs from an sti are a lot stronger, and you get much better wheel selection, so it would be a huge benefit if you could figure it out. I was never enlisted, but Tanner was in the army for a while 🤙
@marka1837
@marka1837 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Matt. I had read that the 5x114 hubs are much stronger. I wonder if the whole rear sti suspension subframe would fit? I had thought about trying it awhile back. You have inspired me to get back into building beast aka the 06xt. It's been sitting for a couple of years with a blown motor. Going to slowly start piecing it together starting with the six speed swap and then build the motor to the power levels I've always wanted! You have built the best xt I've ever seen! So thanks for the inspiration! I'll thank Tanner for his military service! I thought I had heard you guys mention it at some point. Your great guys!!!

@MatlasDI

The 12k/10k honestly felt money on my setup, it may have to do with dampening or preload to some extent on setup. Mess with dampening settings to get it to match with spring rates and you should be able to get any type of bouncing out.

grinding it might reduce strength in that part sufficient to cause it to break under extreme force. Are the backs even really needed?
@MatlasDI
@MatlasDI 2 жыл бұрын
You could always do just the front, it may change bias slightly but more than likely would not be noticeable under standard driving. I don't believe grinding is necessary with anything but the aluminum rear trailing arms, and might not be necessary with a different adapter kit.

I'm a bit of a newbie to suspension etc. so forgive the stupid question... The blue piece on top of the brake assembly that connects to the body/inner wheel well obviously isnt stock, is that to help keep geometry correct when lowering the outbacks? I hear when lowering Outback you need legacy trailing arms I think it is to keep this all in the realms of "ok"
@MatlasDI
@MatlasDI 2 жыл бұрын
Hey man, not a stupid question. you've got the right idea, the blue arm is a megan adjustable upper control/ trailing arm. when you lower the outback the best way to keep geometry is to actually remove the spacers from the subframes and convert the components over to legacy spec which are designed for the engine/ transmission being at a different height. if you are only lowering the outback to around the height of a stock legacy it isn't a huge deal to do this, but if you're getting further into things, using adjustable rear trailing arms/ upper rear control arm is the best way to have the most control over where everything is located and get the alignment set up exactly how you want it.
@ChristopherFranz
@ChristopherFranz 2 жыл бұрын
@@MatlasDI awesome.Thanks for the info. I did see something about the sub frame spacers elsewhere but that made me nervous on my daily not knowing if I’d need new drive shafts from gearbox to diff etc. I was thinking of going legacy gt height. Where the arches are just in line with the tyre. Local laws dont allow anything lower than 100mm(4ish inches) off the ground :/

@MatlasDI
@MatlasDI 2 жыл бұрын
I can't speak from experience on the 5th gen cars, but you'd still need to use the 5x100 rotors from '04 To match the hubs front and back as the sti is 5x114 and the outback for that gen is 5x100. E-brake may already be of correct size so may not need the kns rotor, but not positive. Would just need to check rear caliper clearance and bolt spacing from the knuckle. Fronts should bolt straight up like the other cars. 👌

The rear rotors are a modified sti rotor offered by KNS and DBA. they feature the inner drum diameter for wrx and legacy/outback ebrake components. Pad utilizes standard sti brembo rear pads. What wheels are those ? How do we choose wheels sure to clear ?
@MatlasDI
@MatlasDI Жыл бұрын
My outback has wedsport tc105x's. The main clearance issue is the inner trailing arm on the rear. Determining proper fitment, I'd use willtheyfit.com plug in your current wheel size and then mess around with things to see where it gets you. I ran 18x9.5+45 on this car but ran into issues with it touching the trailing arm on the rear requiring spacers. Having tested a lot of sizes I think 18x9+38 is nice on this chassis; fills out the wheel well, close to the fender and the trailing arm, good scrub radius, and can fit up to a 255 without issue, but in the end it really depends on what look you're going for. There are a lot of threads on the legacygt forums for different wheel sizes and fitment. It's also worth noting that the front tracks wider on this chassis, so it isn't uncommon to have a spacer in the rear to make it look more uniform.
