I've learned from working with a lot of wood (PHRASING) that it's always a good idea to lubricate the screws with a bit of soap. That when when the friction heats up the screw it won't break, and it will make it easier to get the screw out in case you ever need to.

Something I always do and recommend to anyone is: After you removed the original pin and its screw you put some wood glue and a match (the non lighting up side) into the holes. It will harden out in a couple of minutes and will give additional strength to the strap lock.

Bump this golden oldie- I just started following your channel about a year ago, then randomly tonight I decided to KZbin search "install strap locks" . The last set I self-installed ended up stripping out on a 76 Gibson SG. Yikes. So, I wanted to take every precaution and ensure I was doing it the safe and correct way this time. And lo' and behold, 3rd video in the search is this old goodie. I bout the Dunlops, so this tute is moot. However, I wanted to view this one anyway just to see how far you've come. Nice channel, bro.

1:58 "You can use a wrench for this part if you need to" Well, you NEED to. You need to tighten the shit out of that nut. Otherwise it will definitely get loose over time and eventually the lock will fall off the strap. If you've got some Loctite or other superglue around, I would even put a small drip on the threads to make sure it's not going anywhere.

For those of you working about remaking a hole for the screw, break some toothpicks off in it and it practically makes it brand new and will hold the screw tighter.

Yeah, this happened to a friend of mine years ago, the original screw bored the hole out, so now his new smaller screw just flopped in, not enough screw thickness for the treads to grab on to, our bass player, told him to put a toothpick in the bored out hole with some superglue..... His mom, walking into the room, and only catching part of the conversation, said he should just get a new girlfriend............When we all were finally able to stop laughing, I asked him if he wanted me to try mine.... ;) It really was funny, you just had to be there..........

Hey, thanks man. Y'know, as long as I've been playing (since 1970; didn't say I was any good) I've never had occasion to use strap locks, so this was actually new to me. May go for it on future guitars, got a couple builds in the works. And the self-locking straps sound like a good idea, but I've yet to see a good report about 'em. So, strap locks it is.

The choice is yours. You can do strap locks with a couple of disc washers from your local hardware or suppliers like Screwfix. You need a few pence, a screwdriver and the kind of strap that will go in the case with the guitar (no buckles) because it stays with the guitar. Jus' sayin'. I've been doing that since long before we had strap locks.

I'm still wondering why no one ever talk about the Planet Waves Rolling Lock straps.... They're pretty cool, locks very well, are less bulky and rattling than straplocks and in price are very close. The only disadvantage may be the lock pieces themselves are not removable or sold separetely (yet), so you can't use it with your other straps, which could be a dilemma if you have your fav designs ._.
@blkjakk5 жыл бұрын
You need to use lock tite on the threads of the part that mounts on the strap. If you don’t, be prepared to check the nut every time you play because the nuts come loose easily and boom there went your guitar hitting the floor!

If you want them really screwed in there, pull the old hardware, dip a toothpick into wood glue, stick the toothpick into the screw hole, clip the toothpick off flush with the body, wipe away all the excess wood glue, wait a few minutes and screw the new hardware in slowly. I've done this with all of my guitars and they never come close to being loose. Also, don't use the Schallers, use the Dunlop designed strap locks.

I haven't tried to fix that since it doesn't bother me, but I presume you could glue a small thin piece of felt into the U-shaped part of the new strap button on the guitar and that would likely hold the male end on the strap more snugly in place and prevent it from rattling.

@Snakefinger10004 жыл бұрын
Use a thicker screw on the upper bout as the screw supplied is too thin compared to the original. If you look at the assembly side on the strap is too far away from the actual horn.which means the pivot point is too far away when it should be right up against the horn. = screw and the horn come away leaving you with a solid anchor point at the strap and half of your Strat attached. Great for a Tele or a Les Paul but it looks dodgy on a Strat.

Does it work for heavier instrument, you know The ones the cause back problems in later year, in fact the same ones people who’s job it is to move furniture have, instruments that you probably should be sitting while playing but but you want to be flea or les, you know, like the bass guitar, (But seriously that’s a actual issue that bassist have look it up, and that why bassist don’t move a lot a why les always buy from Carl Thompson, because CTs are a lot lighter, which make playing buttery smooth, I say we find a way to make basses the same weight as guitars, and make furniture lighter to help stop furniture move+ bass player back
