Very interesting. I did a diy of my own version of this using vinyl house siding. I found over the years with my pine trees lots of build up of dirt on them. This looks like it will do a better of job washing carrying the dirt and needles away. Thanks

I would worry about water pooling on the membrane and not draining away. This assumes I don’t fall and break my neck while trying to maintain my balance. A few temporary beams perpendicular to the joists could be a safe platform 🤔.

What about debris over the years as it will add Weight, and hinder drainage?

Great instructive video! In the first portion of the video you can see blocking of the joists over the beam. In the second portion of the video where they're installing the rainescape system it appears that blocking has been removed in order to fit together the troughs and downspouts? Is that code compliant?

No way. I came to this video to see what to do when there's blocking or when the joists are less than 8" apart. but they skipped over that part.

Just did some more digging around. Found that the trough should drop down 4" at the end of the pitch. Which means, somewhere in the middle, it will have a 2" drop. If you have 2x8 deck joists, you can get away with cutting out the old 2x8 joist blocks and replacing them with blocks ripped down to 5". But I wouldn't rip them down to anything less than half the depth of your joists.

I have a 16’ x32’ deck build and this will be my first time using Rainescape. I will have about 14’ to the main support. My deck package shows solid blocking in the center of that 14’ trough area. Do I just run troughs in both directions from the center blocking or can I use metal x braces and the trough wouldn’t need much pitch in seven feet and x brace in the center would suffice? Have you run into this issue?

You can do that or after rain escape is installed you can install small roll blocks that will clear the rain escape.

The butyl tape is designed to self seal.

A highly regarded contractor (customer ratings) in my area said he "got out of the deck waterproofing business because the systems don't work...he had a lot of callbacks after installing them.

mmm that's a bummer! A major problem with leaks is improper decking and rail installation after rain escape has been installed. Definitely have to take your time and be mindful of the screws. Thanks for watching.

@@coversanddecks Even the best contractors are under constraints of time and more recently, their ability to find qualified employees to do the work and pay attention to craftsmanship (fit & finish). I'm a DIY perfectionist....I'm good, but I'm real, real slow. Contractors who go that extra mile are generally less competitive than the run-of-the-mill types and their customers tend to be limited to those who appreciate top quality and are willing to pay for it. I'm sure if done properly and with some degree of "perfection" good waterproofing results can be obtained.

It shouldn’t matter because the waterproofing is joist specific. Gravity determines the water flow

thanks for watching. we actually install this a lot on covered decks as snow and rain will still come in. Also, the main feature of this product is that is protects your joist from rot and will never have to be replaced.

Can use water proof joist tape to protect from joist rot

It's also useful if you are using the space under the deck and want to keep water and spills from falling on someone's head. If you got the extra coins install it.
