Greetings Martin, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty 3.7 and I'm in the process of changing hydraulic lifters as most of them are Not plunging. The Jeep overheated about 6 years ago. I managed to run it once in a while. Anyway, I went to our part store here O'Reilly's ordered some lifters and he told me that they don't stock engine internal parts now a days because, "no one do engine overhaul anymore, they just buy rebuilt engine". I told him that's bs. There are still people who rebuild their engines. So the bottom line, I'm not going back there to buy the rest of lifters and rockers in that store. Thanks for the great tips and videos.

Ok I got some of these upgraded rockers from a 4.7, I see your point and the issue with the original rockers, but I also see that the new rockers created another issue, lack of oil to rocker bearings, I have seen a few videos and the majority of rockers that come off are from the exhaust valves so I’m thinking of installing the upgraded rockers on exhaust valves and leaving the originals for the intake valve as they put out a lot more oil.

Okay, Rockauto has a Cloyes set #90393SF listed under 2008 dodge Dakota 4.7 for $270.00. This will have everything you will need, except the toner wheel from a 2002 4.7. Grind the rivets from the back side and punch then out enough the remove the toner wheel, Swap the 02 onto the 08 sprocket and weld up the rivets. I spoke with Cloyes about what I was doing and he agreed it would work. And mine is working great. Cloyes has a video on youtube with both applications if you need to watch and see what they did differently. Best of luck.

Hey Martin! Love all your 4.7 videos! You have no idea how much I have learned from your videos!! Thank you. Wondering what rocker arm brand you put in with the new design? Huge price difference and origin of manufacture. My rockers seem all right, but have old style you mention in video (2001 dodge dakota 4.7). Swapping all lifters and seems like good time to change to new style. Received DNJ (made in china). Got the similar priced EngineTech rockers you mentioned above coming this week. I am torn if I should just leave the old ones or not. Just don't want to put in low quality arms, but think the new design makes sense. Also everything says the Melling MR-1345 rocker doesn't fit 2001 but fits 2002, do you think that is a screw up or is there something to it.

Great video Martin! I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. It started to miss then cleared up for a couple weeks. A couple days ago i went to town about 10 miles away for lunch with my wife and the car ran great on the way down there but after lunch it started to miss when first started but cleared up after a few engine revvings . After driving half way home on surface streets the engine started to miss again. With a car in front of me and behind me with no place to pull over I continued on and the engine started missing on more and more cylinders. By the time I got home it felt like it was running on one cylinder. Had the vehicle towed back into town to a recommended repair shop and the mechanic told me it has no compression on #1 cylinder! I've owned the vehicle since new and always used synthetic oil in the engine. However, the vehicle has 159000 miles on it and I have not changed the spark plugs since 60000 miles. Mechanic said I need a new engine. Mechanic said new engine would cost around $6k installed. Can't afford!!! I had the vehicle towed back to my house and not sure what to do. What would you do? One more bit of information, the engine has never over heated and no coolant in the oil and no oil in the coolant. Everything besides the engine works fine! Again what wood you do?!
@martinbuilt4 жыл бұрын
I would pull the valve cover and check the #1 cylinder's rocker arms and valves to see if it through a rocker arm or if a valve seat dropped. Did the check engine light come on and if so what codes? I doubt it needs a new engine.

I'm preparing to replace all of the lifters on the drivers side of my 2001 Dakota with the 4.7L V8. Saw a review which mentioned the 2005 rocker arm redesign, which led me here in an effort to understand the design change and its pros/cons. Excellent video, answered every question I had on the rockers. A few more related questions: 1) Can I rotate the engine via the crankshaft bolt when one or more rockers and lifters are removed, or will doing so cause issues because the exhaust valve(s) will be unable to open? 2) If I replace rocker arms in addition to lifters, do I need to follow any specific break-in procedure for the camshaft upon start-up? 3) What do you recommend in terms of assembly lube? Saturate with oil before reinstalling valve cover, or use assembly lube on the cam lobes? Thanks, Martin!
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like the video and found it helpful.. You can rotate the engine the to where it makes it easy to remove the rockers. Always rotate the engine clockwise when you're facing the engine. There is no need for a break in oil or assembly lube since it is a roller type rocker arm but you can use assembly lube if you like and I would definitely recommend at least squirting some oil over the lobes and rockers before covering them up and make sure you soak the lifters in motor oil for at least several hours to remove the air.
@Devin_Schwartz2 жыл бұрын
@@martinbuilt - Thanks, Martin! Appreciate the lubrication tips. What if I want to rotate the engine several revolutions (by hand or via the starter) with one or more rockers removed, would that be alright or cause problems since valves wouldn't be opening? My logic in so doing would be an attempt to ensure the oil passages supplying the lifter bosses are visibly clear and pumping oil before installing new lifters.
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
@@Devin_Schwartz Yeah you can rotate the engine with the rockers removed but you're not gonna see oil being pumped through there if you're spinning it by hand, it's gonna take more than that a faster rotation in other words.

Martinbuilt: big time shinny looking valve covers look better than chrome. So the new rockers are for a 05 yet fit your 04 correct ! Are they the same for the HO 04 ? I purchased the 04 HO engine to replace my 4.7 broke engine. I will do a total rebuild on the HO im going to replace the rockers with 05 rockers from your link. I’ll purchase all parts needed by your links from now until i get it installed. Including motor mount inserts and transmission mounts.
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
Yes the 05 and later rocker arms will fit all 99 through 13 4.7 and 3.7 engines. Thank you for the support I appreciate that every little bit helps. And one of these days I got to get my HO engine rebuilt as well

Martin, do you have a preferred method dealing with stripped valve cover bolts on aluminum head? Is there a better way other than helicoil? I have to remove the head for a blown head gasket so getting to the 2 in the back no longer becomes a real problem. I think I'll change the lashes & maybe the rockers. Depending on what style I have. ( I may have a rocker off) Also, Would you consider it problematic to upgrade lash and or lifter on one bank and not the other? Thanks for all these helpful videos. One can never obtain too much information.
@martinbuilt Жыл бұрын
If you didn't do the Helicoil, I personally would probably drill and tap it out to on size larger. I personally do not see any problem with just changing out one side of the lash adjusters. Thank you for watching I'm glad you liked it and found it helpful.

What an amazing tutorial about the rockers and lifters... Really really helpful. I will do my lifters myself on my Jeep 3.7 2006 cause they make sometimes noise for a coupe of seconds at startup. I wonder where can I get those chrome shinny valve covers for my 3.7 ??
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
You may want to try some Marvel Mystery oil that could cure your lifter noise. On your next oil change use half a quart. Then if that doesn't fix it then I would replace the lifters. If you want your valve covers to look like those look up how to Polish magnesium.

hello martin, I love your work on the 3.7 engine, I have a 2012 jeep liberty and done a little work to it. I'm still getting a PO301 code on cylinder one, I put in new spark plugs gapped at 45 degrees. and new wires new coil packs. and I'm still getting the code PO301. could it be a bad rocker arm? Great video! I’m rebuilding a 4.7 for my Ram. The donor motor came from an 05. I shouldn’t have any problems cleaning up the rockers in the 05 donor for the rebuild right? Im trying just to spend money where it benefits the most. I’m doing the 08+ upgrades on the build so I found an intake and I need to buy the adapter for the TB. Also doing the ATI under pulley. Mainly my question is if I clean them up the used 05 rockers should be fine on my rebuild right?
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
Yes those rockers from your 05 will work perfectly like you said just clean up and install them also a good thing to blow some compressed air through that smaller hole of the rocker.

Hello Martin I clicked the link for the B-2271 lifters and they are out of stock do you know anywhere else I can get these lifters I've been and will continue to keep looking, you have been very helpful and I greatly appreciate it and the time you take to explain to in your videos
@charliedee92763 жыл бұрын
They changed the lash adjuster in 05 or 06 as well. The 2271 adjuster is part 53021077 and the new one is part 53021894AA or Sealed Power HT-2308.

Would you recommend replacing all the lifters if 1 is bad? My thoughts is you already have the valve cover off. Cheaper (time wise) to just knock them all out, no?
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would recommend at least the one valve cover you have off to change them all out especially if you're doing this on your grand Cherokee on the passenger side valve cover very hard to get out because of air conditioning heater hoses and wiring that are all in the way.

Mr. Martin thank you so much for what you do and sharing your vast knowledge about the 4.7. Because of you I am no longer scared to do these modifications to my vehicle. I am currently in the middle of a 4.7 to 4.7 swap for my 04 ram 1500 4.7 SLT 4X4 because of a blown head gasket and milky oil. I bought another donor 04 ram 1500 4x4 because it currently has a strong 4.7 with no issues. I do have a question if you have time. Both trucks have the 8th digit N in the VIN. The donor is an automatic tranny while the recipient is a 5spd. Watching your video on replacing the stock cams with the earlier HO cams you scared the daylights out of me. You made mention about the PCM plugs. The donor (automatic tranny) has a 4 plug PCM while my truck has a 3 plug PCM. Is this due to the difference in the auto vs 5spd or am i going to run into the tone ring issue? Also my new to me cams are marked 1414AB and 1413C. Did I do good on the pick and will they work? Again thank you so much for your time and devotion to this channel. Sending you some educational funding as soon as i post this !!
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bradley for the kind words and generous donation I really appreciate that. Yes the camshafts you got the 1414 and the 1413 are HO Cam shafts. Now the situation with the number of plugs on the ECM on your donor 04 seems a bit odd that it only has 3 and this could be because of the manual transmission the 4th plug is for automatic transmission control. To verify that both of them have the same tone ring on the crank shaft or reluctor gear I would verify that they have the same camshaft gear on the passenger side compare the rectangle holes and if they are in the same location then you are good to go. I would remove the Cam gear from the engine that has the blown head gasket lay that Cam gear up against the donor vehicle engine and compare carefully to verify that they are the same or not. Let me know what you find you can always contact me on my Facebook Messenger there is a link in the description of all my videos.

Martin have you heard of putting a washer under the lash adjuster .030 - .040 to prevent the rocker arms coming off ? Also when upgrading to the newer style rocker arms, are newer style lash adjusters available as well , was there a design change in the lash adjusters. Mine is 2000 4.7
@martinbuilt4 жыл бұрын
I have heard of the shim under the lash adjuster. It is not necessary to use the newer lashes with the newer rockers.

Good stuff Martin. I am in the market for a 2002 liberty and was researching some set backs I might come across. You addressed a major concern I’ve read about the 3.7 and 4.7 engines. I do have a question, are these parts you listed interchangeable between both engines?

Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying the content.. Yes, the rocker arms and lash adjusters are interchangeable between the 3.7 and 4.7

Hey Martin quick question if you can give me some information, Ok is it necessary to take out all Spark plugs to change the Lifters/Rocker arms? And also do I have to put the engine in TDC first before doing this project?
@martinbuilt8 ай бұрын
No it is not necessary to remove the spark plugs it will make it a whole lot easier to turn the engine over manually when you the spark plugs are removed. No you don't need to bring it to TDC just have the lobes facing somewhat upward. And as you're facing the engine always rotate the engine clockwise or you could do damage to the main timing chain tensioner. Thank you for watching 😁

Hello Mr Martin, my 99 wj 4.7 rockers came loose and messed up both heads. I decided to install another engine. And found a 4.7 HO. Question can this swap be done. Thanks for all the great videos.

As long as that is a 04 or older HO engine that will swap right into your 99 with no problem. You are very welcome and thank you for watching.
