Greetings Martin, I have a 2003 Jeep Liberty 3.7 and I'm in the process of changing hydraulic lifters as most of them are Not plunging. The Jeep overheated about 6 years ago. I managed to run it once in a while. Anyway, I went to our part store here O'Reilly's ordered some lifters and he told me that they don't stock engine internal parts now a days because, "no one do engine overhaul anymore, they just buy rebuilt engine". I told him that's bs. There are still people who rebuild their engines. So the bottom line, I'm not going back there to buy the rest of lifters and rockers in that store. Thanks for the great tips and videos.

Ok I got some of these upgraded rockers from a 4.7, I see your point and the issue with the original rockers, but I also see that the new rockers created another issue, lack of oil to rocker bearings, I have seen a few videos and the majority of rockers that come off are from the exhaust valves so I’m thinking of installing the upgraded rockers on exhaust valves and leaving the originals for the intake valve as they put out a lot more oil.

Grind the rivets from the back side and punch then out enough the remove the toner wheel, Swap the 02 onto the 08 sprocket and weld up the rivets. I spoke with Cloyes about what I was doing and he agreed it would work. And mine is working great. 07 Jeep Liberty, 3.7. My question has to do with the rocker arm and lift shooting through the plastic valve cover today. My question is if the rocker arm wasn't sitting properly or if the lifts with bad could that be the cause?
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
If the rocker arm was installed incorrectly, that could happen, but generally, the lifters (lash adjuster) will collapse, causing the rocker to fail out. Then, once that happens, the oil pressure will push the lash adjuster out as well. I have seen several valve covers damaged from the rocker arm. I've never seen one where the lash adjuster goes through the valve cover.

I'm preparing to replace all of the lifters on the drivers side of my 2001 Dakota with the 4.7L V8. Saw a review which mentioned the 2005 rocker arm redesign, which led me here in an effort to understand the design change and its pros/cons. Excellent video, answered every question I had on the rockers. A few more related questions: 1) Can I rotate the engine via the crankshaft bolt when one or more rockers and lifters are removed, or will doing so cause issues because the exhaust valve(s) will be unable to open? 2) If I replace rocker arms in addition to lifters, do I need to follow any specific break-in procedure for the camshaft upon start-up? 3) What do you recommend in terms of assembly lube? Saturate with oil before reinstalling valve cover, or use assembly lube on the cam lobes? Thanks, Martin!
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you like the video and found it helpful.. You can rotate the engine the to where it makes it easy to remove the rockers. Always rotate the engine clockwise when you're facing the engine. There is no need for a break in oil or assembly lube since it is a roller type rocker arm but you can use assembly lube if you like and I would definitely recommend at least squirting some oil over the lobes and rockers before covering them up and make sure you soak the lifters in motor oil for at least several hours to remove the air.
@Devin_Schwartz2 жыл бұрын
@@martinbuilt - Thanks, Martin! Appreciate the lubrication tips. What if I want to rotate the engine several revolutions (by hand or via the starter) with one or more rockers removed, would that be alright or cause problems since valves wouldn't be opening? My logic in so doing would be an attempt to ensure the oil passages supplying the lifter bosses are visibly clear and pumping oil before installing new lifters.
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
@@Devin_Schwartz Yeah you can rotate the engine with the rockers removed but you're not gonna see oil being pumped through there if you're spinning it by hand, it's gonna take more than that a faster rotation in other words.

I had a bad tapping noise after replacing the number 5 cylinder rocker arm and lifter so I left it alone for several months while trying to find information about the issue. I decided to start it up and move it a couple weeks ago and to my surprise that tapping noise was gone. I’m guessing that the lifter didn’t take on enough oil when I left it in a tub of oil before installation. However, I tried starting it a couple days later and now it won’t start. Now it’s on the back burner again.

They should come out quite easy by hand if you're having any difficulty at all with them you could probably grab them with a pair of small channel locks or needle nose pliers from the outside edge and lift them out.

Do you set the timer
@martinbuilt3 жыл бұрын
you are not removing any of the timing chains so there is no need to time time the engine, simply remover and replace the rocker arms. Always turn the engine clockwise when facing the engine.

How do they just hold on? Once they crack on do they attach to the lash?
@martinbuilt6 ай бұрын
Yes the lash adjuster is holding on to the rocker arm. This is why it's important to have good lash adjusters if a lash adjuster collapses the rocker arm could come out. In my 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee I run solid last adjusters and I don't have to worry about that at all. Other than that they are expensive and you spend a lot of time adjusting them properly.

Hey Mr Martin I have a 02 dodge ram 1500 4.7 motor I just had a Rock arm shoot out of the side of my vele cover on the passenger side and this is my very first truck and I don't know what's wrong but I watch your video on when a Rock arm shoot out of the side what can I do to fix or I have to get another motor
@martinbuilt2 жыл бұрын
1st you'll need to remove the valve cover and inspect to see if it damaged the cylinder head or not.. You should find a lifter lifter (lash adjuster) possibly laying in the cylinder head as well. If you're lucky and it did not damage the Camshaft or the cylinder head replace the lash aduster and reinstall the rocker arm. It may be a good idea to replace all of the lash ajusters on that 1 cylinder head while you got the valve cover off. Make sure you soak the new lash adjusters in oil for at least several hours to help remove the air within them.

I have a picture of it I was I could send to you so you really know what I'm talking about. The thing that pushes the arm up that little slot that thing sit in broke a little pieces is miss it want hold it in place

Is it okay to rotate the camshaft, (at the harmonic balancer of course) without rocker arms installed?
@martinbuiltАй бұрын
Yes only rotate the camshaft at the harmonic balancer (crankshaft) can be done with or without the rocker arms in place just don't do it at the camshaft cuz this will cause a lot of stress on the timing chain and guides.

Martinbuilt: big time shinny looking valve covers look better than chrome. So the new rockers are for a 05 yet fit your 04 correct ! Are they the same for the HO 04 ? I purchased the 04 HO engine to replace my 4.7 broke engine. I will do a total rebuild on the HO im going to replace the rockers with 05 rockers from your link. I’ll purchase all parts needed by your links from now until i get it installed. Including motor mount inserts and transmission mounts.

Just ordered from mellings 2 sets part number mr-1345 but they have the bigger holes . This is not good. They have different holes to my old rockers but they are not microscopic like you say yours are?
@martinbuilt6 ай бұрын
Yeah mine are OEM I had higher confidence in the OEM part than I do the aftermarket ones. But the ones you did get are still directing the oil toward the cam lobe instead of just hitting the top of the valve cover and splashing everywhere.
@BuiltByRik6 ай бұрын
@@martinbuilt I have always had a good run with Mellings in the past. I know they cost more but you get what you pay for. Just like the timing set. The quality of this set compared to a generic brand before is noticeably different. I also purchased the professional set. This set is made from Hardened steel and I think only Mellings do a set like that. Other sets are made from powdered steel. They mix different grades of metal powder and heat those up and press them into shape. A much faster and cheaper way of production. Hardened steel is made from a solid piece of steel and then hardened and tempered. I just hope the roller chain will hold up better than the link chain. Rik
@BuiltByRik6 ай бұрын
@@martinbuilt PS yes OEM is better a lot of the time but sometimes a good manufacturer will make a better/improved product. I presumed you had Mellings because you have them in your description.
