This is what i was gonna say too. I usually get stuck soloing with one scale and trying to hit root notes or triads as the chords change but thats a pretty basic approach. I agree a video about understanding chord changes and what to do with them would be nice.

sumartana wayan Intervals, triads, major scale, relationship with chords compared to the major scale! (What chords are in what key) Not trying to butt in but I think this is what he’s talking about when he’s saying to understand chords! Every time you learn something new there’s probably like 5 new branches of things you can learn off that. Music is pretty cool 🌞

Tomo--Your approach to teaching has enabled me to truly understand the interrelationship between chord progressions and triad inversions to not only play more melodic leads but also to rearrange chord progressions. But the real value from your videos is that I've created a teaching/practice framework using your 3 level approach. When I sit down to play, the goal may be to play 2 chord progression (C to Am) but playing the chords horizontally and vertically using triad inversions to capture different voicings. I've been doing this daily (30 minutes) for about 2 weeks and I've noticed my rhythm playing becoming more fluid (I know where on the fretboard to go to). Second, I'm actually learning each note on the fret board and deliberately picking notes that are in the scale as opposed to following a scale (minor/major pentatonic). The result is more melodic and creative lead playing. I joined your guitar wisdom about 3 weeks ago and it is a huge value. I'm 54 y/o, and I can't stress enough to younger people how valuable these videos are for learning how to play guitar. Thanks Rick

Warning: Wall-O-Text Just to add onto something Tomo said, I just want to say that I agree. This fairly universal chord progression, I - ii7 - ii7 - I, does sound a little bit like a mini blues progression using the typical I, IV, and V chords. In particular, perhaps it most closely resembles a I - IV - V - I chord progression. I think the reason this is is because there are so many shared scale degrees. So in a ii7 chord you've got four scale degrees (notes): 2, 4, 6, 8. In this case it would be A, C, E, G. So you've got the whole IV chord already in there with C, E, G. The fact that the first instance you hear the ii7 chord is after the I chord I think frames or paints the chord in a subdominant tonality to our ears. More so even because it's also in the context of the rhythmic phrase, in which it feels like it's almost like a response to the first part, consequential. But then the rhythmic phrase gets to the second half, and we are back to a downbeat, but on the third part of this four beat rhythmic phrase. So this is the turnaround. In this case, the ii7 chord is not in response to the I chord, it stands entirely on its own. And our ears perceive it differently as a result. Now we perceive a more dominant tonality because rhythmically and harmonically we want to go back home, to the I chord and the first beat again. And here I think it's the A note that stands out more so to the ear because it is so close to the the root, G, but not quite there yet. Granted, in this view of things you also have to recognize that relative pitch is just as important as scale degree. That is to say, if I were to make a chord, low to high notes like in the first instance, of C, E, G, A, this is not a ii7 chord in this context, even though it shares all the same notes. This would be a IV6 chord, a subdominant chord, C Major chord, with a A (6) added onto it. And our ears would perceive it as such. The way I look at this is it's as if our ears envelope or contextualize higher pitches into the lower ones. Simply put, the lower ones are more important. And hell, I guess the same applies rhythmically speaking. The only reason C, E, G, A would be a IV chord is because a G Major chord came first in time: rhythmically. You can play the same two chords but start with one or the other and you've got two different chord progressions. Play C, E, G and then go to G, B, D and you've got a I - V chord progression. If you play G, B, D and then go to C, E, G, you've got a I - IV chord progression. It's really that simple. But anyways, I digress. So in the 3rd measure the ii7 chord is painted more in a dominant light. It's the third measure so you've got the second heaviest downbeat of the rhythmic phrase, and here you're in response land. Kind of turnaround-ish by default. And therefore, when our ears hear that beautiful A note, the 2nd scale degree, we perceive it differently than the first time around, in the 2nd measure. Now that chord doesn't come next to the I chord, it stands opposite to it. And now our ears really want to go home. They don't like the awkwardness. Or maybe they also love it... It's that "wanting to go home" feeling that paints it in a dominant light, and therefore evokes towards the V chord (D, F,#, A) via the A note. This is what Tomo means by understanding chord changes. It's analyzing them in a similar light to the above. Everything in music is contextual. You need to understand that there's a harmonic context and a rhythmic context, and they work hand in hand, tandem, at all times. Anyways, in truth, these things are hard to articulate. You really have to more hear them, feel them, and then play them. This is the best way to understand chord progressions. You need to be thinking in scale degrees first. So in numbers: I chord, IV chord, vi chord. That six chord, here an E minor, is minor because it's in lower case Roman Numerals, in case anyone is completely lost here... But then you also need to understand the individual notes that make up these chords and how they relate to the root note, the tonic. You can then, eventually, start looking at playing notes completely different than what's in the chord being played. Hint, there's a reason solos are played up the neck at the high notes. All of this, of course, is also within the context of rhythmic patterns, which inform what any given note or chord is actually doing at any given time. It's a whole world unto itself that really has no bottom... But ultimately it's the FEELING of a chord that is what you're tying to understand. It's the feeling you get that makes a V chord the dominant chord. It's literally what we're referring to by even calling it a dominant chord: that feeling of wanting to go back home to the tonic.

Tomo the question they should be asking at 6:14 is what defines music? The chord, what makes the chord, 1 3, 5 sometimes 7, 9, 13, so on. So if you are not adding some of the notes from the chord in your solo playing you are going to sound undefined. So the question is what are the strong notes of the chord and how little of those notes can I get away playing with without sounding undefined? A guitar player cannot just simply ignore the underline defined chord being played.

Thanks so much! That's simply Etta James R&B groove!! I think theory part after MUSIC. Music really brings me there. So just listen carefully, play them, taste, enjoy them so you feel music! Besides that you can prepare technique, triad approach each. Think Simple, play slow!!
