Change hook to wide gap and go one size larger.. Don't forget split ring pliers

I've actually switched techniques completely for jigging since this video, I actually now use a drop shot and it's just way more effective and a 90% hookup ratio! But I will have to try that out on the spoons maybe next year and see how that goes but the drop shot has been super effective!

Thanks for the video! Curious what pound test you use for going after big lakers?

I'm using 20# or 30# braid with a 15# Fluoro leader :)

So stupid question time. Was your transducer at the front of your boat?
@DanRichardFishing Жыл бұрын
Hahah all good! This was using the transducer I have on the bottom of my trolling motor :)

If you don’t sharpen your hooks might try that to keep more hooked up. We don’t lose too many Lakers and our hooks are so sharp you almost can’t set the lure down
@DanRichardFishing4 жыл бұрын
I use brand new gamakatsu trebles from the pack, they're razor sharp, I don't know why they come off so often and other times they are completely hooked and going nowhere!
@charleskarpinski44414 жыл бұрын
Dan Richard Fishing Sometimes they swipe at it or nose bump the lure so could be they aren’t getting hooked inside the mouth.

So I ended up jigging for Lakers this weekend and it worked pretty good! My only issue is if you fish a new lake(like I did) it's hard to determine where to jig. Sure you can read the shoreline and approximate underwater structures. But what I did was troll in the morning and used my helix to map out parts of the lake, then went back in the evening to jig the structures I mapped. I think trolling/mapping/having coffe and setting up in the morning and jigging in the evening is my new jam. Thanks for getting me onto this
@DanRichardFishing4 жыл бұрын
Haha that's awesome, I'm glad you enjoyed the experience! And you're bang on about how to find where to jig. I like to idle around and see where I mark them the most and then work those areas with the jig. I'm so stoked you liked this technique, thanks for letting me know!!
@lostcanadian12404 жыл бұрын
Exactly why I troll for Lakers. You can get down deep and hit those 55cm/45cm (some zone 10) easily. Yeah we don't hit a ton but what we do are big
@lostcanadian12404 жыл бұрын
But I will be trying this out on slow days for sure
@DanRichardFishing4 жыл бұрын
On this particular lake, it just seems like the jigging outfishes the trolling every single time and for some reason NOTHING bites past 60 feet no matter what you do. How deep do you generally troll? Honestly I fish so rarely for anything that deep, I don't even own a downrigger.
@lostcanadian12404 жыл бұрын
@@DanRichardFishing I fish the thermocline. I have a hummingbird helix and if you jack up the sensitivity to the max you'll see where it is. Doesn't work on rivers or disturbed water though. So all depends on the time of year and lake size/depth. Late August on Lac Dumont for example, can get down to 60-65 feet and that's where the monsters hangout. I personally never eat/keep the big ones they don't taste great and rather fish them again another day

@@DanRichardFishing for salmon on lake Ontario we've followed 100 feet of depth on a drop off and put our rigs at 80

Crappie are good eating fish. They call the big ones Slabs. The usually hang out where bass do.

They are indeed tasty but it's a lot of work to fillet enough for a meal or two lol!

That interference is probably caused by either your electric motor or a second sonar running in the same frequency band.

Are you letting the jig hit the bottom or just jigging it right before it hits the bottom
@DanRichardFishing4 жыл бұрын
I am constantly making sure I have bottom contact, so as the depths change, I will let out line or bring some in until I am making bottom contact. If I see a fish on the sonar higher up, then I'll bring it up to him, otherwise I jig from the bottom :)

What rod is that please?

The rod I am jigging with is a Medium Heavy Fast action Triumph X rod from St. Croix :) I picked it up a couple of years ago on liquidation and love it for tube jigs and spoon jigging :)

Dan Richard Fishing thanks Dan, I’ve got a shimano Cardiff 301 and I’m looking for a decent vertical jigging rod to pair it with. Lakers where I am go to 15lbs so it needs a bit of backbone.

@@simonfox5123 This would do it! I picked it up for $89 CDN so any rod from St. Croix at that price is a steal! lol! 15 pound lakers? Very nice, can I come? ;)

Dan Richard Fishing lol sure, I’m three hours south of the Canadian border so bring your boat down! I can’t get anywhere near that price, it’s around 120 bucks plus shipping. It’s in my short list now 👌

Yeah definitely no heavy hitters in there but still a lot of fun. I've got quite a few videos where we catch some very nice slabs off the St. Lawrence river and surrounding areas. Caught a couple of nice gorillas out on the ice in March :) You can see a few on the instagram account like this fella: instagram.com/p/B8NcVergcMR/
