Its funny how skipping (jumping rope) is generally only acceptable for; 1. young girls below the age of 8 2. fully grown, big, strong, mostly male boxers two polar opposites

Beta Factor Yeah that's true. As a kid when i was at a socially acceptable age I was pretty good at it and could go at quickish pace. I stopped though like most boys for years. Recently I picked up my sisters rope and found I'd lost it :(

Speaking as someone who didn't skip at all two years ago and now does, typically, 13 mins a day (4 in the morning, 5 in the afternoon and 4 after dinner at night), I can sympathise. Like you, I did other exercise, riding a bike and going to the gym a few times a week, I considered myself fit. But... First couple of times I tried skipping, it was with one leg (like you were jumping with one leg), couldn't skip with both at same time and anyway, after just 30 skips, I had REALLY sore calves for a few days afterwards. There's no real magic to how to progress. Just do it! In my case, I started with a cotton rope, but now have a plastic rope which is far faster and I can skip in my kitchen which has a vinyl tile covering on the floor which isn't concrete hard, and isn't too soft. I skip in my bare feet. And that's part of it, the rope just hangs from a cabinet handle and I don't need to move anything, so it's so easy to just do your skips. Just build up slowly. Also, with the small plastic rope, it can just go in your pocket, and you don't need much space, so you can skip in your office or hotel room. I count my skips, I do around 160 per minute, so the morning is 640 and the afternoon is 800. For me, that makes it easier. I've heard fitness experts say that if you can skip for 2 minutes (if you screw up, just pick up and continue skipping until you're pooped) then you have average stamina. If you can skip 3-4, you have good stamina and if you can skip 5+, you have excellent stamina. That's why I aim for 4 in the morning and evening, and 5 at my peak in the afternoon. I guess skipping for longer may help your overall fitness, but 15 minutes would be waay too long for me. I'm going to try breathing through my nose. I have a slightly deviated septum, so that will be a challenge, but the more you breathe through the nose, the easier life is, especially during sleep. As a regular skipper, I can say it tones your calves and hamstrings, arms, shoulder and forearms; "tones" doesn't mean you get huge muscles, it means there's less soft fat so you feel harder and look better and you legs and arms have better definition.

Don't give up because of jumping rope.. There are people like me that.. have vision problems that require glasses or contacts lenses... Imagine the feeling, if you can't fight with proper vision. Isn't it much worse then not knowing jumping rope, which you adquire with training ? Yeah.. Sad story of me.

I'm no athlete in any way, not that I'm not good at sports, but I'm not in any sports, however skipping is my absolute favourite thing ever. I do it at least 20min-1hr each day and it's really fun to do. I do different variations as well going at a really intense speed. I also like to compete with myself to see how many jumps I can do in a row and see if I can beat that the next time and I'm doing pretty well. So for everyone who feels to just drop what they've started, don't. It's good to keep pushing yourself. You. Will. Get. It. :) great video btw

I've been coming back to this post hoping someone would post their experience, so I'm doing it now. 2 hours is doable but the amount of strain in your body would want you to take a rest day after jumping rope. I use the 1 - lb weighted jump rope I made by myself. I'mma try doing it for a week or 2 and see how it goes. Hopefully I get my abs to show.☠️

You will develop a lot of the necessary endurance and muscles, but you gotta run to be able to run properly. You gotta practice technique, just like everything else. Johnny made the point on another video that most people don't even know how to walk properly. Walking is a great prerequisite for running, as is jump rope. By the same token, walking and running are good lateral exercise to work up to jump rope.
