I usually just stare deep into my opponent's soul and then ask... "Do you really think you possess what's necessary to open my guard???" The mental bullets fired create so much destruction to my training partner's will to attempt a guard opening makes for a fairly easy flawless victory. Just stare and smile... observe the effectiveness!

I never knew the waiter sweep. I usually star sweep from there. Thank you Brian. One thing that helps me with guard retention is before my guard breaks, grabbing the triceps, opening, putting my feet in their hips, and pushing their hips away to reguard. It demoralizes people. That and good ties. A proper whizzer or shoulder crunch is going to break the posture and isolate one side of the body.

Absolute great stuff when the things I was teaching last class was when they open up your guard creating some space so they try to fill it and when they do that you break their posture. And then you can continue to have a good guard

Quick question on the topic of closed guard: I like to break their posture (like you showed) by pulling in with my knees, but this seems nullified by partners who raise their hips into an upright kneeling posture (as opposed to sitting on their heels, their body is basically straight up from their knees to their head). Would you continue to try to break their posture or is it smarter to just play an open guard at that point?

Just my view, but if they "stand on their knees" like that, they're in a bad posture. If you have a good grip or so you can easily off balance them and pull them into what position you want, be it closed or open guard. If you don't have any grips and they're trying to stand up I'd probably change to open guard.

@@stassenchr i know what you mean, but when they have a solid base, wide knees and hips forward while doing this, I find it very hard to move them at all. I'm happy to change to open guard though as I generally prefer it anyway.

I go for sweeps (Hip Bump Sweep in perticular) when they get streight, but their knees (a.k.a. base) are close to each other.

I always cringe when someone steps up like that in closed guard cause it is so unstable and hard on the knees. It is way too easy to off balance him when he is wobbling especially if i just babybridge

My No Gi guard is decent. I get killed on Gi. To many grips. Everyone always grabs my pants and controls my legs to much.

attack the 2v1 like Brian shows here or open your guard and attack via open guard

most of the time that just tickles, i can keep my guard closed for a significant amount of time even if someone is doing this. what does that tell you? that at some point, your legs will stop being so sensitive to it.

If you have a flexible mindset and you feel condident switching to open guard, you can let go of your closed guard, get an angle and attack him because in that scenario he doesn't have grips on you and you can move very freely
