❤ your vlogs - great stress relievers- much needed of late. The "jigsaw" scenery❤💙 - although trying to solve a jigsaw of your canal scenes maybe not😂😏🤪 Do you stay on one moring for winter? Or move every two or so weeks? Watched another boater who is preparing for winter hence the ? Thank you Jan Adelaide P.S ❤ the glass museum with the narrowboat in the frame -postcard maybe? Great for the TV series to come?

Hi Jan, we are continuous cruisers so will continue all throughout the winter, moving every week or two, unless we get frozen in and then would need to stay longer lol. We quite enjoy the winter, a new set of challenges, ice, snow, freezing conditions, rain, wind etc, keeping stocked up on food and water, diesel for the engine and fire, and being able to empty our toilet lol, they’re all part of the adventure! You have some great ideas, thank you and have a lovely weekend! xx

Hi guys, the scenery just gets more and more beautiful as you travel. I had a chuckle at ROCKY LOCK because back in the late 70s when I worked at the General Motors Holden car plant as a spray painter, painting cars. The blokes decided I needed a nickname and Because they knew I was a musician, I was given the nickname around the factory as ROCKY. A few years ago we became parents of two beautiful rag doll cats, they are brother and sister with blue eyes and white and grey fur. We needed two names that ended in y or ie like Tammy or Gingie, past kids, as all of our cat have had names ending like that. So the boy is called Rocky and the girl is called Jazzy. So Rocky lives on.🤣🤣 Tom and Richard were nice chaps and it was a great idea filming the lock from the boats perspective. It reminded me of a ride in the Movie world theme park here in Aus called river rapids.🤣🤣 I always enjoy your videos so relaxing and entertaining. Stay safe guys. 👍🏻👍🏻❤❤

Hi Geoff, or should I say ‘Rocky’ 😜 really glad you enjoyed the ride inside the locks, it was a great experience and a good opportunity to show how the water enters the locks and where to place your boat to stay safe, something a little different eh! Waw, that filming in the lock was really powerful, could be tricky as a single boater or a big boat like Liz and Paul’s. Good there are volunteers ho help out. I still can’t get over it how different everything looks from the water. I can see why you moved from a house to a narrowboat now! ❤🎉❤
@JulieandMartinonRIB
@JulieandMartinonRIB Ай бұрын
Hi Eric, yes, we absolutely love life on the water, like you say, everything looks so different from the water! With longer boats like Liz & Paul’s and single-handers, they would just take it slower and open the ground paddles and wait for the water to be above the fill and up to the gate paddles. This way when the gate paddles are opened, it is running into the water instead of dropping down, and your boat would be on the same level or above so the water wouldn’t fall into your boat. Hope that makes sense! Thank you so much Eric, have a lovely weekend! xx

The lower end of the Staffs and Worcs canal is beautiful especially around Kinver and Wolverley I don’t think it get the recognition it deserves I’m so pleased Martin keeps the bow away from the front of the lock on the way up I do the same I been told more than once to let the front fender slide up the lock !!! you can see from your camera footage lots do

Hi David, the Staffs & Worcester canal is one of our favourite canals, so beautiful! Yes, we have heard of people doing that, perhaps ok if there are only ground paddles as the water comes in from underneath, we wanted to show how the water enters the lock, we certainly would not open those gate paddles if the boat was near the top gate! Thanks David! xx
@BarbaraMulligan-v8m
@BarbaraMulligan-v8m Ай бұрын
Very good footage. Martin keeps the boat at exactly the right spot, presumably with some throttle to counteract the force of the incoming deluge, while also ensuring not being pushed back too far and risking hooking onto the back gates. It was very helpful to have long locks in the staircase. The driver is constantly monitoring the flow & adjusting the throttle accordingly - no sitting back & relaxing or nipping inside for a comfort stop!
@JulieandMartinonRIB
@JulieandMartinonRIB Ай бұрын
Hi Barbara, that’s exactly right! Often people think that I have the difficult job working the locks, but I think Martin has the most difficult job, making sure our boat/home is safe, such a huge responsibility. When I’m working the locks I’m always keeping an eye on the boat to make sure it is rising or lowering at a level pace and so is Martin, like you say, always adjusting the throttle and keeping the boat where it needs to be. So pleased you enjoyed being onboard with us inside the locks, have a lovely weekend Barbara! xx

Hi Judy, yes, the next time we go down in a lock we will show that. I think we will need to show it from Martin’s perspective, as going down in a lock is the opposite from going up, in that you need to be close to the front gate, so as the keep the boat forward of the cill. I may do a talk over in an upcoming video, as I’m sure we have some coming up that are going down. Thank you Judy, have a lovely weekend! xx

She really is a beautiful boat and it is evident that you have both enjoyed her. I love the way you showed the canal book to the viewers, nice touch and very informative. Mark Alberta, Canada

Hi Mark, Rhapsody was built in 2004 by G.J. Reeves and fitted out by Crown Boats. We didn’t have her built, we have only owned her since September 2021. We were very lucky that the two previous owners really took care of her, as we do too. Thank you for your lovely compliments Mark! xx

Hi James, lovely to have you onboard. You can get those mug holders at most chandlers or even caravan accessory shops, but I’ve just looked it up and found it on Amazon, here’s a link amzn.to/3OGeeVL it comes in many colours. Hope this helps! Thanks! xx

I notice over several videos, boats that are either in the process of sinking (sad) or have sunk (more sad). Would rain collecting in the unattended or abandoned boat a contributing factor to the sinking? I'm of course, excluding boat maintenance for leaks from the equation. Are there automatic bilge pumps that help? Is it collected for use on the "healthy" boats?
@JulieandMartinonRIB
@JulieandMartinonRIB Ай бұрын
Hi Brent, usually boats would have drainage holes somewhere at the front in the well-deck, so rain water would run out. But at the back, especially in the engine bay, if water leaks in it will just collect and yes eventually sink a boat. Usually most boats will have automatic bilge pumps to expel the water, especially if they are leaving their boat for any length of time. Otherwise, boaters will always keep a check on the engine bay and also check the base plate using an inspection hatch near the bulkhead at the back and pump out any water that has collected over time using a pump. In winter you have to be especially careful, as there is always condensation that builds up inside the hull, due to changes in temperature, being warm in the cabin, but the hull being in icy water, you can see the droplets when we look through the inspection hatch and see the condensation on the inside of the hull. This water runs down and collects near the bulkhead. Our first winter onboard, we weren’t aware of the need to check it regularly and when we did we had over 13 litres of water down there! 🫣 but this is completely normal and in the summer months it’s dry as a bone! Hope this all makes sense Brent! Thank you xx

Hi julie and martin quick question why do narrowboats have one or two coloured srtipes at the tiller ?
@JulieandMartinonRIB
@JulieandMartinonRIB Ай бұрын
Hi Graeme, they are called tunnel bands, it’s how they used to tell which way a boat was travelling in a tunnel, or so you could tell if a boat was approaching or going in the same direction as you from a long distance... This has been carried on especially on trad stern boats like ours, keeping things looking traditional. Hope this helps! Thanks Graeme xx

Thank you again for posting another video . One question regarding morning privileges. Could you explain where and how you’re able to discern locations that are open to the public verses those that are private . I see there are indicators in maps but do you have visual aids on the canal itself ?
@JulieandMartinonRIB
@JulieandMartinonRIB Ай бұрын
Hi Sean, yes, there are signs on the bank showing if they are private moorings, or perhaps CRT long-term moorings, or moorings that are for permit holders only. If there are no signs at all, then you can moor for up to 14 days, and often there are signs that say we can moor but have a restriction of say 1 day, 2 day, 5 day, or 7 day only mooring. I will try and incorporate this in a future video. Please bear with us, as we have ended up a few weeks behind with footage, as ended up cruising more journeys than usual to meet Ch4’s schedule. I will see if we can catch up a bit with the odd extra video, so it will be in a few weeks. Thank you so much Sean! xx
