Thank you. As a new learner these are questions I have. One question, can you tell me how many stitches less will there be from the foundation chain? Example: I cast on 100 stitches, I am doing double crochet - what will be my stitch count then? And does it change depending on which stitch I will be doing?

You should check out - Crochet no turning chain by JenniferJerome... So much neater and no gaps like you have in your tutorial. Also, 2 chains are normally used in turning crochet rows.
@ForeverBlissCrochet8 жыл бұрын
+Anne-Marie Koelewyn Thank you for your suggestion. No-turning-chain DC is something I use in my own work and I teach in some of my live classes. The technique in this video is a very basic skill that, I believe, all beginning crocheters should know. No-turning-chain DC is an advanced technique that is fabulous to learn, but not when you are new to the double crochet stitch, in my opinion. I disagree about 2 chains is normal for dc. Turning chains are 1 for single, 2 for half double, 3 for double, 4 for treble, and so on. If someone chooses to use 2 for double, that is their adjustment to reduce the gap. Nothing wrong with that. We all find ways that work for us. Thank you for taking the time to comment! :)
@anamie19568 жыл бұрын
My pleasure :) You'll find that lots of the experts that do tutorials on You Tube prefer 2 chains at end of row when making scarves as it creates a straight edge. Jennifer Jerome's method is also spot on for creating straight sides in scarves. Lots of good choices :)
@lesleyoliver55827 жыл бұрын
Anne-Marie Koelewyn actually that is not correct. The number of chains used at the beginning of a row depends which stitch you are doing. I.e. Double crochet you would use 2 chain, Treble crochet you would use 3 chains and so forth. The intention is that the chain stitches match the height of the stitches you are crocheting. Hope this helps your understanding.
@ForeverBlissCrochet7 жыл бұрын
+Lesley Oliver Thank you taking the time to comment. I respectfully disagree. Turning chains are as follows: single crochet 1, half double 2, double 3, and treble/triple 4. Some people choose to reduce the chains to make the chain gap smaller. I have another video about some of those options.

Your instructions are very clear, as is the camera work, making you easy to understand. I certainly learned something new here, and I now know to look out for this. I subscribed to your list and plan to watch you often. Thank you! I am new to crochet (self taught) and get confused on how to count the stitches. When you see the instruction that "the three chains count as one stitch" and then it says; "DC 10 stitches", do you count that first one, or do they want 10 more in addition to?"
@KimberlyLetsGo7 жыл бұрын
Laura MacQueen if you are just starting your row, the first stitch--the 3 chains would count as one of the 10.

@grayciesmom5807 Жыл бұрын
I agree with two for the turning chain instead of three. Maybe would prevent that gap on the end. But if you're beginner you probably should have general rules to follow and then as you get more experienced you can make adjustments. When I use C2C Stitch I don't do six and three but instead five and two

To close that hole there is another way. Chain 2 and then do a SC in the back bump of the 2nd chain. This brings it up, makes easier to find the stitch later and fills in the hole to make it look like a DC.
@gorgeous33257 жыл бұрын
Gina, thanks for the tip! Haven't heard of that technique before. I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense. I'm starting to relearn crochet after many yrs. Still practicing SC, but when I start doing DC again, I'll definitely use that! Thanks again!

Why do some patterns say to count it and some say do not count it?
@ForeverBlissCrochet5 жыл бұрын
If the pattern say to count the turning chain as a stitch, it is acting as a stitch substitute and taking the place of the first stitch. This is a method to create straight sides. When the pattern does not specify or use the turning chain as a stitch substitute, it’s simply being used to get your hook up to the height needed for that row. This leaves the turning chain hanging off the side but, depending on your pattern, it does not matter to the designer.

Hello Tasha I have the thinnest yarn ever and a massive Hook I don't like anything I make do I need a smaller hook to make something other than a chain thanks in advance ????
@ForeverBlissCrochet6 жыл бұрын
Yes. It does matter that the size of yarn and hook are “made for each other”. On your yarn label, it will suggest a hook size. If it only gives a knitting needle size, get the same size in a crochet hook. For beginners, I recommend worsted weight (#4) yarn and a size i-9 or h-8 hook.

KZbin is a magical thing in that it gives YOU the power to either stop watching or fast forward! No one was forcing you to watch! Also, KZbin is FREE!!!! You didn't pay a dime for a seasoned educator's wisdom! That's a VERY good deal and I doubt you'll find that kind of deal on college campuses in your neighborhood. Finally, if you're going to comment, try your best to use correct grammar and spelling. It should have been "Too long to get to a/the point."' Now watch me make a mistake in my comment! I'm confused by your comment that I was going too fast. What exactly is it that is too fast? The topic is about how to not loose or add stitches in rows. When it comes to the edges, I take considerable time to explain what I am doing and make sure that you can see what I'm doing. If you want to learn the double crochet stitch, that is a separate video.
