Carbide insert cutters are designed to be replaceable, but often all they need is a little touch up to cut like new again. The Rockler Carbide Cutter Honing System makes it easy with a 6'' diamond stone and a magnetic grip that securely holds your cutter as you guide it back and forth on the stone. You'll find the cutters clean up nicely to a keen, crisp edge. The grip has a molded recess that accepts all shapes and sizes of carbide cutters for our line of Rockler Ergonomic Carbide Turning Tools.

Of course if this is ONLY designed for Rocker ONLY size carbide cutters, seems it would force you to buy Rockler. Don't really have an issue with that but what if we already own some other brand?

Our Honing System might work with other brand carbide cutters. However, we can't guarantee it, as cutter sizes differ. If you would like more specifics on the product, please reach out to our product support team at 1-800-260-9663 or support@rockler.com. They'll be able to assist you. Thanks!

As a new turner with my first set of carbide tools, how do I know when its time to sharpen?
@rockler
@rockler 5 ай бұрын
That is tough to answer. However, you could try carefully feeling the area of the cutter that you have been using, and then feel an area that has not been used. If they feel noticeably different (area that's been used feels duller), then it's time to rotate the cutter to a fresh area, or sharpen it if you have used all the areas. If you have more questions or need more assistance, please feel free to reach out to our product support team at 1-800-260-9663 or support@rockler.com. They'll be able to assist you. Thanks!

Possible stupid question but can you use a carbide tipped tool for turning just handles or are they only for specific projects?
@rockler
@rockler Жыл бұрын
You can use the carbide tools for pretty much everything. They are amazing tools to work with. Very little sharpening required and easy to use.

.. but it is thinning the blade, isn't it? Wondering how its strength gets affected!
@rockler
@rockler 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, each time the cutter is sharpened, it becomes microscopically thinner as a small amount of carbide is abraded from the surface. But practically speaking, it would take many honings to weaken the material to degree that the carbide would no longer be strong enough to do its job on the tool.

i always heard 600 was as fine as you wanted to go?
@rockler

Hi Aaron, there is no downside to honing carbide to finer grits. The more polished the edge becomes, the easier it will cut, and it also may retain a sharper edge longer.

......so easy wood tool cutters won’t work?
@rockler
@rockler 3 жыл бұрын
Easy Wood Tool cutters will fit into the recesses on the holder but not as securely as the Rockler cutters will. The recesses are larger than the Easy Wood Tools inserts, so they will shift around inside the holder during honing. Honing them is still possible this way but be advised that their fit in the holder will be loose.
