This low-mile 1998 Toyota Camry V6 came in with a misfire.
Plug? Wire? Coil? Injector? Guess again...
Doesn't take long to diagnose the problem, and unfortunately it's not going to be cheap to repair.
However there is always a silver lining ;)

Chunks out of exhaust valves happen when they can’t effectively transfer heat from the valve to the seat. I had a 98 Sienna with tight valves. I’m sure you already discovered shim on bucket for these engines. Also my friends 99 RX300 was burning a lot of oil. His independent shop said new engine was needed. I instructed the shop to order a cam cover from a later Lexus. Breather baffles get clogged in cam cover that are very hard to effectively clean. Other than sticking IAC valves if oil is changed every 5K 300K plus engines. Now that the car is yours remove the Camry letters on the back reinstall to spell Mycar 😊

yeah, very likely valve and seat wear made it too tight to seal right anymore and POOF. possibly enhanced by the full synthetic oil or an overheat scenario causing valve seat movement. many engines had the shimmed solid buckets, many lasted the vehicles lifetime(often 300k+), but some got tight and poofed valves. **but it could be dirty injector and major ethanol stacking, since it clearly hasn't been driven that much or even the gas station had bad fuel (ethanol stacking) and dumped it at cheaper price.

I have worked on many old air cooled VWs years ago and my theory is when it is an oil burner carbon builds up on the seat not letting the valve make a complete seal and when it starts to where it starts leaking the hot gas blowing past that valve will eventually torch a hole in it. When you get it running throw a can of Rislone in the oil and take it out and run it hard for a few hours. Always has worked on my airplane engines when they get to burning to much oil.

I've never had to tear one of these apart before. They just don't die like that. But yeah. It just goes to show you. Even a legendary indestructible Toyota engine can suffer a catastrophic failure when it's not been properly maintained. Looks like it will be a really decent spare car to have kicking around once it's fixed. Looking forward to part 2.
@rafflesnh

Not sure how 'proper maintenance' would prevent a chunk snapping off a valve head?
@Eastahtata
@Eastahtata Жыл бұрын
@@rafflesnh There's several reasons. Extended oil intervals lead to carbon building up on things like pistons, valves, and valve stems. When there's too much buildup it can affect the way the valve closes and transfers heat back into the cylinder head through the valve seat. Excessive carbon can make the valves stick in the guides, disrupting their travel and also not seat down properly to shed the heat from the exhaust gasses. I believe these required premium fuel also. Using poor quality fuel could cause knock/detonation which can also damage internals. This car likely had poor fuel in it simply because it sat around and wasn't driven consistently.

Nice find! I have a '99 3.0 XLE model and since it's driven only around town except for maybe 6 times a year when it then gets it legs stretched about 300 miles on each of those trips. And so I change the oil around every 5 months no matter what, and use synthetic oil with a Toyota oil filter. So far at 240K, other than spark plugs & timing belt services with valve cover gaskets with crank & cam oil seals and the rear exhaust manifold leaking a bit (I decided to replace it), it's been a rock solid engine. Too bad I live in the salt belt, but I've been doing my best to keep things washed off underneath during the winter. It's also my only car, and I'm not afraid of it taking me anywhere.👍😁

Ivan. My son and I rebuilt a 98 Chevy blazer one summer. He put a lot of money to make look like a monster truck. 44 inch boggers. 1 ton axles front and back. We rebuilt the engine. In my cramped shed. Lots and lots of plastics to minimize the dust. We managed to keep it pretty clean. The following summer he moved to Phx Az for a job. He pretty much drove it hard. 😁. He said he would have people stop him to take pictures. Around late summer the truck developed a miss. He took it to some local shops. They told him. Welllll...it needs a tune and carb rebuilt? So they did that. Still no good. He called me and told me. I told him. Do a simple compression check. He said..no tools dad. So I packed all of the tools I may need to do a valve job. I had all I needed. Took a few days off work. Arrived in the evening at the apartment. We did a quick check. #1 was low on compression. I told him. It's a burnt valve. We got most of the things done to pull the head. Morning arrived. Pulled head in 1 hour. Yup. 1 intake burnt. The rest were ok. ? No matter. A quick trip to the JEGS store. Got the valve. Lapping compound. Gaskets and antifreeze. Then I got started hand lapping the burnt valve in. Got it done. Got my valve compressor on. Installed keepers and reassemble it. By the end of the day. Truck was running good again. What I found the cause was. Truck was running very very lean. Burnt valve. To make matters worse. The local shop even leaned the engine out more. We purchased a carb kit to richen the fuel mix. I spent 3 days total. After the job went dry. He drove it home with no issues. I even took my middle daughter to high school a few times. Lots of ooooinh and awingggggg. Fun times. That brings me to my current issue. My 01 malibu trans blew a front pump seal. Soooooo...that was my loaner car too. My grandson used it to run to work. So as soon as I finish up my older daughter 3/4 ton truck. I may get it running. With the snow on the ground...hmmmmm...this ole man may wait a bit.

Can the lack of maintenance (oil changes) be connected to the valve failure? Hmmm. If a foreign object found its way into the engine, could it have stuck at the edge of the valve seat and beat on the valve long enough to break it? Is the seat okay? We'll return to our adventure soon to learn everything about this failure. Thanks, Ivan, as always.

His car had 135,000 miles and was very well maintained. He called me one Saturday and told me he wanted his crow with salt and pepper. I asked him what he meant and he said the timing belt broke and he was stranded and would I come and get him. I went to U-haul and rented a car hauler. Sad that had to happen. With bad rings all around, I'd figure just the #4 cylinder fix is logical however, considering the work involved to get to that one cylinder, it really seems logical to do a complete valve job, seals, guides etc. as well since the access is all there. Question however, would be with a complete valve job, that tends to rely more on piston rings which could end up causing even more oil consumption. So, being the mechanic and owner and its a Toyota that has a great standing for reliability, I would highly consider doing a piston ring replacement as well. It's cost is mostly labor but the outcome would result in a better outcome, loaner car or not. Sometimes the added effort pays off better over time which older vehicle should be entitled to since they were designed way better and were much more reliable than new. BTW...when you were using the throttle under load at low RPM my first thought was fuel or vacuum related.

I don't know for sure what it is, but I have seen plenty of oil burners with leaking valves. The Geo Metro, for example--they will burn up their valves as they start consuming oil. In the cases I have dealt with, the exhaust valves were still reasonably clean. What happens, I believe, is that the lash adjusters do not work properly with the gunky and dirty oil in them, so you end up with a negative valve lash, and thus no heat dissipation to the valve seat, and a burned up valve results. If the oil stays clean, they go forever. But when the oil gets dirty in 500 miles, it's inevitable that this happens. It would also explains why a 100,000 mile Toyota engine did the same here. However, if the oil burning is via leakage at the valve guides/seals, it doesn't seem to be an issue. Probably because the combustion soot isn't making it to the oil as much as it does when the rings are the culprit of the oil burning? I am afraid that the "proper" repair here is going to be to re-ring it to stop the oil consumption. It is what experience tells me so far. It will run mint afterwards and possibly forever with just the occasional use, but if I am right, the dirty oil will fill those lash adjusters and start causing problems again. I will add a Ford Vulcan V6 in a Ranger that started having leaky valves. 120,xxx miles, no unusual oil consumption, original owner, maintained as expected throughout its life. A valve leaked and I had the heads rebuilt. This is after seeing tons on Vulcan V6s that have gone to lunar orbit with no issues. Sometimes, it just happens.

I had an engine with bad compression an burning oil so when I took apart the head I ground all the values as it was better to increase compression numbers while changing out the rubber seals, I also cleaned smooth the in and exit port's for better flow the engine ran better than it did before, I had people asking me for the engine if I ever scrap the body. All my cars get a oil change at the correct time and most had no faults in running, ie overheating to bad oil passage ways. Even flushed the radiator and heater matrix.

Pretty sure that generation Camry, Toyota had an ad campaign that made the (obviously tongue-in-cheek) claim that you could weld the hood shut, they were so reliable, and I think even had a shot of somebody doing just that. Guess those old folks really took that claim to heart. Also seem to recall them having issues with oil sludging on the 1MZ in Camrys and first gen Siennas. Always wondered what the story was with that.

I wonder if a small chunk of carbon (from the PCV?) landed between the valve and the seat? Additionally, Id recommend using Berryman Oil Change Flush 1216 after it's back together. I did on a '99 Toyota V/6 with a questionable maintenance history and compared the before and after oil samples to check for sludge. It definitely cleaned things up.

I'm thinking a chunk of carbon due that oil buildup, or some foreign object entered the combustion chamber. Looking forward to part 2.

I am wanting to say Ponitac made a van called the Transport beginning in the early '90's that was very similar to the Silhouette. (Chevy made the Lumina APV.) The front end looked like a Bonneville. I don't think the Transport was offered with a Supercharged 3800. IIRC that van had plastic panels that could be replaced individually. I think later on Pontiac made a van called the Montana the replaced the Transport. Great video!

correct, no factory supercharger on the '92 Transport but it did have a 3800 series (L27) in it as an option. Sadly the L36 Series 2 didnt make it in factory as the '96 dropped both the 3100 and 3800 options

It might not be a bad idea to get the injectors checked out. If one is partially restricted, it can make the cylinder run hotter and burn valves. Just a thought. I bet the Van will go liked greased lightning with that supercharged engine.

I don't know those engines but since it has high oil consumption maybe it is a case of deposits from the burnt oil creating an insulating effect on the seat face letting the valve run too hot .

Classic burnt valve symptoms. I've never seen a Toyota that burned a valve...but here it is! I think that valve burned because it got a hot carbon particle stuck to it, became super hot and ate away at the valve. I've heard of that happening.

The reason why it has burned valve is because a piece of carbon got stuck or wasn't seating under the exhaust seat holding it open just a bit enough to burn the valve out usually caused by people not pushing the engine hard in upper rpm every now and then

While 'some' Toyotas may be "bullet proof", the 97-2005 2.2L four-cylinder and 3.0L V6 are now known to be sludge(r) or oil gelling engines. Toyota blamed poor maintenance, but for model years 97-2002 Toyota/Lexus agreed to repair engines damaged by the sludging for up to 8 years from the time of purchase. I don't believe Toyota would have agreed to that had there not been a known issue. Unfortunately, like previous owner(s) here, likely never knew about it. Looking at the cam shafts and other areas look fairly black, especially for the miles. Not saying that's the cause of bad valve, but imo could be a contributing factor. Likely Scotty Kilmer wouldn't want to read this comment, but a simple Google search will confirm everything posted. These engines definitely require synthetic oil, and shorter service interval can't hurt. I look forward to the repair result and ascertaining the cause.

Since it averaged only 4k miles per year, would changing the oil once a year made any difference? No matter what, even if you put 1k into the car, and nothing else happens, you got a great deal.
