It never ceases to amaze me how timing chain components are some of the most important parts in an engine yet are made the cheapest.

They didn't used to be. With a few exceptions, the old cam drives would last the life of the vehicle. I've only had to repair the ones with nylon or fiber gear drive systems.

You could throw an email to "DiagnoseDan" channel because he messes with these euro cars all the time. He might be able to tell you where to get the service info and also parts. Could be worth a try. He does quality videos at your level, with scopes and scantools, etc.. (I'm sure you know about him). Couldn't hurt to just make a quick contact and see what happens.

Something tells me that if you popped it open, you would find a Chrysler (or something else familiar) part that is normally $200, but if you ask for the one for the Maserati they charge you $2000. I see a lot of these cars around (and the SUV...Levante?), they seem to be almost as popular as Teslas with the "I have a lot of money, I need to find a way to burn it" crowd.

The Diesels are the same as a Chrysler, but this petrol V6 is a Maserati engine, funnily enough I think the parts are made in the states but it's designed and assembled by Ferrari. However, a genuine timing chain tensioner is $275 on ebay, hardly end of the world. Ivan just needs some repair information (which shouldn't be that hard to come by) and he should be good as gold to repair. At the end of the day it's still a fairly conventional V6 turbo, there are no crazy parts from mars to be found under there.

Ivan, one caution: some car manufacturers specifically warn not to rotate the engine backwards, as the tensioner components are engineered to work in only one direction. Hydraulic tensioners also do not work well with zero oil pressure. It has to be repaired anyway, but a warning for others.

Wow now you have gotten into some extra-terrestrial tech with this one Ivan but I know that you can figure this out. At 6:12 you have two Angle of Inlet- camshaft edges relative to crankshaft and one Angle of outlet- camshaft to crankshaft PIDS going crazy and yet the remaining Angle of outlet-camshaft to crankshaft PID that momentarily blip ed and then went to zero, Hmmmmmm what's that all about? Great captures of "good" and "bad" and the bonus footage at the end was gold. Skipping the chain with just a ratchet and actually seeing it pop was all you need to present to the customer as a definite diagnosis and hopefully he or she will heed your warning and not try and run this motor as it is an unknown as to interference engine or not. It is truly amazing that with just basic knowledge and a scope you can troubleshoot even the most exotic engines with confidence. You Rock Ivan once again. Take care and have a Merry Christmas.

Hey Ivan, just a FYI. In Euro car world, "Additive" adaptation values are Idle/No or low load Fuel Trim values. "Multiplicative" adaptation values are load/off idle Fuel Trim. You still have your basic/standard LTFT fault setting criteria but since the STFT can be distinguished between idle and load, diagnosing becomes much easier & quicker if you understand your data, which you're pretty damn good at. Keep up the great vids!!!!
