I’ve kneeled on my replacements but after four months post op and being careful. On the hard floor it can be a little daunting but my first attempts were cushioned with a pillow or folded towel. Sometimes you have to get on your knee cleaning up around the house. Just take it easy and no damage will occur.

This is interesting because I read you shouldn't until 6 months post op. There was a video that an orthopedic surgeon talked about a study/process that Dr. Richard Berger did. He is allegedly the #1 surgeon in the world and is at Rush in Chicago. Anyway, he had patients start kneeling right away on the sofa or chair for a week, then gradually go to a firmer surface each week. And most could kneel. I know people who garden and such without any problem. The yoga instructor at the health club has several participants with knee and hip replacements. I kneel on a step in the pool. I have my 3 month follow-up on the 14th and am asking.

Great tips for kneeling! Thanks, I really find this helpful. I'm 5 months out and still don't have full range of motion! Also, when I do get in the kneeling position, I don't fully get directly on the knee, it's slightly a side kneel. If you can under that!

Kneeling may be a form of conditioning over time but how does one get up from the kneeling position with a double TKR? I am post op 7 years and to return to standing or even sitting from kneeling on the floor one needs to put all their weight on the knees. Next to impossible for me. I always need to hold onto to something strong like a piece of furniture or a railing to get up in a contorted manner with my arms doing all the work. If I fell and there was nothing to crawl to to hold onto, I would be stuck on the ground.

I had both tkr 10weeks apart 3½yrs ago. Tried kneeling but the sensation is painful so i avoid it. Work as a refrigeration mechanic in a supermarket chain, up and down on concrete. I lay down to work on the floor or sit on a bucket to work. I will take the implants over bone on bone any day.

While I want to kneel after 3 months allowing the bone to grow into the knee metal fixture for a solid fit, was told by the surgeon’s PA that kneeling should never be done or risk loosing the fit. What is correct? I always expected I could cautiously kneel knowing it would take practice.
@dr.samanthasmith8 ай бұрын
I haven’t seen any updated research stating that. I would look at the research and present it to them. How do they expect people to crawl if needed, look under the bed, what if you fall? There’s so many reasons to train for kneeling.
@ramullen18 ай бұрын
yes, agree. i think after the 3 months allowing the bone to grow into the fixtures, one should be allowed gentle kneeling without any harm. i will ask the surgeon since he never mentioned this, just his PA but he did mention i could do light skiing but no jumping or running as that could loosen the fixtures over time. i was surprised he did not use any glue for attachment since said my bone was excellent for grow-in tight fit. i will ask and report back.

You’ll want to ask your doc. If the entire patella was replaced, you might not be able to. Generally with a knee replacement only the underside of the knee cap is replaced.

Hello, I am just 3 weeks past knee replacement and at week 2 was able to get to 102 degrees bend and having no issues with straightening either. My concern now is I feel the muscle above my knee are tight and knee cap and below the knee is still numb. I want yes to know is there anything g I can do to loosen up the knee and inflammation so I can bend more. Was told it will take time but was wondering g is there anything I can do to help. When I sit at work my knee tightens up and have to walk.

You have to massage your knee with vitamin E everyday three times a day to loose up those muscles. If you don't it will stay like that. GoodLuck!

Dr Samantha, do you know if there a difference in being able to eventually kneel or not, depending on whether the Surgeon has had to work on the back side of the actual patella or not? I understand he/she doesn't always know they have to work on that until they begin surgery and so some patients may not know whether that's been needed or not and how does that affect the "knee" longterm? Just asking.
