Learn to knit socks on Double Pointed Knitting Needles.
In this tutorial we will walk through each step of knitting socks on DPNs including: casting on and setting up, knitting the heel flap and gusset, knitting the toe, and how to close up your toe using the Kitchener Stitch.
This tutorial accompanies a written pattern that can be purchased on Ravelry & Etsy. (Links below) In the tutorial I will be knitting a size medium from this pattern. If the amounts needed for Small or Large are different from the medium I will put the info at the bottom of the screen.
Pattern is written for Small(Medium, Large) - Circumference 8-9”(9-10”, 10-11”)
A Note on Sizes: The sizes listed are based on the foot circumference and not the foot length. I recommend choosing a size that will allow for 1-2 inches of negative ease to get the best fit. You will knit the sock to the length that you need in order to fit.
If you would like to purchase the written pattern to follow along it is available for only $2.00, you can do so here:
Ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/libr...

Supplies needed: (links are for where the ones I used in the tutorial can be found on Amazon)

Scissors: Ones I used aren't on Amazon, no link to purchase. But here are my favorites!: amzn.to/3w58SK7

Thank you for this. Of course, nobody wants a sob story behind a video like this, but I tought I'd share. I really wanted to learn how to knit socks for nearly 20 years. My mom is a knitter and a crocheter her whole life and she tought me how to make my basic stitches. I begged her for years to teach me how to make socks (her specialty) and the one time she agreed it wasn't great. You can imagine: dtress, yelling and forever the abandonment of the project. So I stopped asking and pushed this dream of mine afar. Now I am doing a lot of personal healing, dealing with depression and anxiety and our relationship isn't doing well. So I decided to pick up my needles and maybe learn socks myself. This was super helpful and even if my first one had some mistakes (shouldn't been watching shows my bad) the second one turned out perfect. I am hooked and I am so so grateful. You wouldn't believe this but it healed a tiny little part of me and it's a beautiful thing. One woman teaching another this ancient art is wonderful. So thank you again. Hope you are doing well ❤️

So-I’m 75. Knitting all my life ALWAYS shied away from small needle projects. Any under size 8 weren’t my cup of tea…I thought. Well I got a mystery bag with a bunch of fingering weight and I just dove into sock knitting! Your tutorials are essential! I find the small needles and small project to be stress free knitting. Sock yarn varieties are soooo much fun. Just perfected German twisted cast on with your help. Perfect. Thank you❤️

I'm stupidly close to tears, haha. I just knitted my first sock!! My needles are a bit bigger (I really can't be bothered to order new ones, as it takes at least two weeks for them to arrive) and the sock is definitely wonky and too big, but hey, I still made a sock! :D Thank you for this pattern!! It's absolutely perfect

I had the opposite problem! I had size one needles but used worsted weight yarn so they came out Hagrid sized. They make great, cozy slippers though.

Haha that's how my first sock that I never finished is going. My true first sock is now on the instep, much stretchier and thinner yarn (the sock still maybe too big or small, not 100% sure yet) and I'm watching videos to prepare for the toe! I've not actually just sat through 1 series or video to make my own vanilla sock, I felt more accomplished trying to piece it together with what I couldn't figure out on my own rather than being told what to do. Yarn rebellion! Lol

This is actually a good way to learn the construction of a sock. If you use needles that correspond with the yarn you are using, (9" circs or two sets of circs for in the round) even if you are using sports weight yarn (buy cheap!) you can knit a humongous sample sock and get the hang of the heel turn and picking up stitches for the gussets as well as knitting in the round or on two circs. Then advance to sock yarn fingering weight and size 1 or 2 needles, it will be clear in your mind what to do. Remember that socks yarn is a blend of a fiber and a nylon blend. The nylon is necessary because socks need to be expandable for a foot and still spring back when you wash them. Dont just buy fingering weight. Read the labels and google good socks yarn brands.

For anyone struggling with picking up the gusset stitches around 38 mins in i found using a crochet hook to grab the wool and pull it through then putting it on the needle WAY easier that trying to do it straight onto the needle! 👍

I'll be 75 on 09.11. I taught myself to knit at 59.... learned to crochet at 16. Haven't done either for over 10 years and these tutorials are a real blessing to getting back into the groove of knitting! My first sock was beautiful pastel multicolor..... It turned out absolutely perfectly! Each stitch was perfection! The heel was exquisite BUT, even though I used the right yarn and needles my tension was so tight the sock was too little to even fit a doll baby! I'm still incredibly proud of my first beautiful sock! PS, done on attached needles. I was trying to do 2 at a time socks but ended up with 1 mini sock.😄😉😁

Can I use 4 needles instead of 5. That’s what I have
@irenefoss2245
@irenefoss2245 2 жыл бұрын
@@pattithomas4469 all packages of double point needles come with 5 needles. Some patterns call for using 4 needles and some call for using 5 needles. It is best to use the number of needles called for in a pattern. You will run into problems if you use a different number of needles than the pattern calls for.

My metal needles are so slick that I frequently drop stitches. First time using them--they eventually settle down. I switched to bamboo 5" DPNs. They are slightly larger than round toothpicks! I LOVE them. Using two sets and knitting both socks simultaneously. They (the socks) are definitely wonky, but I'm getting the architecture down, and am having a blast! I think one day we'll all be glad we have this skill. Now to raise sheep (LOL). Thanks, Kay!

i bought a book years ago about knitting socks from the toe up. I got so far and couldn't figure it out. So I put it aside. I have been off a year as the center closed because of the pandemic and then my boss retired. I went on youtube and I found this. I have knitted 2 pair. My first pair I dont think I caught 2 stitches very well as I wore them and at the end of the day I saw 2 stitches undone. Was a little leery of trying a second pair, but I did and they was fine. Wore them 2 times. I have done a lot of things since last year.

Oh my god, this made me laugh so hard and also made me feel better because I have done EXACTLY the same thing, with a HUGE first sock, and my husband told me I must frame it - I think I’ll frame the pair together, because it’s even funnier that way, lol. (But I will say my huge first sock was the result of a different pattern that required you to knit a swatch and calculate your stitches per row - which I did, and somehow I messed that up, lol, because my sock would fit an elephant! So I switched to Kay’s pattern and tutorial to see if I could iron out the bugs and it has been a godsend!) Thanks for sharing your experience, it made me feel better!

Thank you so much for your tutirial. I have just completed my second pair of socks. I made all kinds of errors on the second pair for some reason but I learned so much by having to go back, unpick , rewatch your tutorial sections many times then have lightbulb monents. My father did not hold the education of his daughters in high regard because we were not taught how to knit socks or turn a heal as his mother and sisters could. Well 60 years after he voiced his low opinion of our education I have used the lockdow ( due to Covid.19, three months) to learn how to knit a sock and finally be able to turn a heal. Thank you.

Loved the tutorial and found it all very relaxing and very proud of myself for completing my first pair of socks on three dpns. Cant wait to finish these. Happily sailing through my first sock from this channel. Godbless you and Thankyou so much for sharing your talent ❤❤

I have been knitting way before you were born. 😀. I'm 76 and learned to knit at age 8. I learned 🧦 on dp's. Even though I'm a seasoned knitter, I enjoy watching knitting videos. You are a phenomenal teacher in that you are detail oriented and explain each step very concisely. I wonder why you use those progress keepers to count rows. I have always used a row counter that I wear around my neck. It's much easier and very accurate. Thank you for sharing your expertise with the knitting community.

Thank you so much for this free video and I purchased all 3 sock patterns for the different needles. I was having so much trouble with DPNs in general before I watched this video and got your tips. There were some very simple things about DPNs that I did not understand and once I did...it WAS stupid simple! The tip about tugging the 2nd stitch is invaluable. You helped me successfully knit a pair of socks for my sister's birthday. She loves them! I am looking forward to trying the other two sock knitting methods....after I knit a few more pairs on DPNs! Thank you so, so much for a great instruction video and for taking the fear out of DPNs!

Omg I am only about 5 rows into the ribbing and this is amazing! I watched the whole video and your explanations are wonderful. I am an avid crocheter and a very poor knitter, but I think I might actually be able to make a half decent sock. Looking forward to getting to the stockinette portion and working through the rest. Thank you!!

I was having trouble with the heel turn of the size small. Frustrated and ready to chuck everything into the rubbish I emailed Kay. What an angel 😇. She promptly replied and gave possible trip ups where I might have gone wrong. I counted the slip stitch as a stitch in row 1 of the heel turn section. 🙄 so set in my ways. Thanks Kay you're amazing .

I decided to watch your video from the heel where I was finished but I was getting confused with the amount of DPNs I should be working on. I was working on 2 only and found it difficult but doable. Then I saw this video and saw you had all 4 DPNs being used doh! I should be fine tomorrow when I get onto completing my whole sock 🧦 . I am using scraps for practice. My John Arbone sock wool arrived today so I will begin with John’s wool from Devon UK 🇬🇧 for my first pair of socks from his sock kits. I was in awe at how every 2 gorgeous skeins came in a calico project bag as well as a swatch from their range of yarn. A very clever marketing tool. I was also sent their first Season glossy booklet again beautifully packaged to protect from travel across to me here in Victoria Australia 🇦🇺. The booklet has the story behind John’s business and every employee has a pic and answers to some questions regarding their favourite machine and what they have named them. Also their FAV food at work! Just a lovely surprise and a postcard with the sheep their yarn comes from and a hand written thank you 🙏. I am so looking forward to be able to soon wear my lovely socks 🧦. And thank you so much for a great video.

I completed my first sock using KFI Collection Painted Sock 🧦 colour #101 Aruba Blue. 75% Merino superwash 25% Polymide 100g. 400 metres wit plenty to spare! Perfect for wearing with your jeans. I didn’t get to knit the sock with the darkest of the blues ! My goal was to finish this one today and continue withe one I had already begun until I go to,bed as tomorrow I have my surgery for carpal tunnel. So no knitting 🧶 or crocheting for a while, but it will be wonderful to be pain free every morning. Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺 Thank you for this awesome tutorial.

Thank you for your video tutorial! I only could knit on 9 inch circular needles for socks but today decided I wanted to learn on DPNS . I have thought about this awhile now as my hands get tired on the small circular needles. All of the videos I watched made dpns for socks look very confusing to me! I am now knitting my first sock on DPNS and love it so far! I am able to knit much longer and my stitches seem to look much better! I have seen other videos but think your tutorials are one of the best if not the best on You Tube!

I do not have words to thank you for this amazing tutorial. I have just finished the heel on my very first sock and I am now starting to knit the foot. I simply can't believe that with your help I am on my way towards accomplishing this project which has felt like impossible for about 10 years of my knitting experience and I always felt like "nah, socks are way too advanced for my skills, I will just knit another cardigan or scarf". Thank you, thank you, thank you. I wish I could show you the pic, but I do not think youtube allows to upload it here.

Thank you Kay for this very usefull tutorial. Finally i got a correct heel flap and gusset i always had issues with the gusset for what reason i could'nt get it in my head, now it worked ( lol) i'm on the decrease part now ;) of my first correct vanilla sock ;) i did the heel flap with double strands (because i walk a lot without wearing shoes) and get always after wearing them a view times holes under my heel parts. And the thickness doesn't border me because i have no feeling in my feet because of my fysical disability. I'm happy with your tutorial
