David Brooks is inspiring me to expand intimacy and deepen relationships. Simply, I'm shifting my intention and attention. I sent the book to my brother, just a few weeks later, our conversations have moved from " the weather+" to knowing each other better in the present time. I'm very grateful to David Brooks ! Cathy S.

I am beyond grateful for David Brooks and his work. It’s truly needed for the time we’re in now, and rarely do we get the exposure to his kind of words or a true assessment of the world, especially for people that don’t go seeking for new ways to view life. Absolute legend 🫡

I don't know if in trusting people "most people" you will find that they will trust you back (maybe it's 50/50?) but it does mean that you will find out fairly quickly people whom you can trust. One needs to be fairly careful with trust but it is always good to lead with it. It's a "handshake" announcing that you are trustworthy.

You can trust people without revealing your private information and still being authentic and honest. It just means you listen more, and speak brief but consciously and with good intentions as the basis. And be comfortable with long pauses and silence.

So, don't just 'be yourself', for most people, we need to change, not be ourselves rather be the better self. Like intelligent conversations like this.

So, this was great - as usual, but having lived, I suspect all in my right brain, in emotions rather than logic, I would like to ask you to be nice to my friend - (I’m talking to you, David Brooks:) Please be kind to yourself. This sounds like you feel bad about not giving your emotions enough attention. It’s fine. You’re fine. As it happens, I’ve shifted over to my logical left brain this past year and it’s an absolutely fascinating way to live. Not really for me, but it’s nice to visit. We all gravitate towards the place we feel most at home. So, I just wanted to remind you to be kind to yourself. What you bring to all your friends out here reminds us that we are good hearted people despite being imperfect. Thank you for what you do. BFF

I think this view is predicated on the belief that someone else's validation of you not only nurtures your existence but prevents you from ceasing to exist. This is certainly not true for other civilizations. In the West, with its survival resting upon capitalism and consumption, it may be true. But in self secure societies, they do not need external validation, they have it inside themselves.

Something about Brooks gives me the willies. Could be how often he’s been wrong in his punditry without accountability, or maybe it’s been his insufferable both-siderism that’s allowed bullies to keep pushing to the far right. Good anecdotes well told but there’s something fake about this wannabe guru.

Recently you described Kamala Harris as “despicable” ostensibly because she had changed some of her views. I suppose you think she’s not allowed to grow and change over the years? She’s not deserving of respect? Or, are you such a hard right conservative that you cannot grant her an inch? Do you really think it’s better for our Democracy to vote for Donald Trump, who has such exemplary views? Is so moral?
@elizabethk323823 күн бұрын
Harris, Obama, Clinton are just as immoral as Trump. You are just like all others...blind d by your chosen bias.

@67wwwoman Rather, “I’m a bit confused. I remembered you referring to Kamala Harris as being despicable because she had changed some of her views. Why this adjective?”
@fredkendall49556 күн бұрын
I heard David Brooks refer to Kamala Harris as “economically ignorant” on PBS. Sadly, he was appropriately blunt and spot on. In the prior decades, someone like KH would never had been considered as a credible candidate for President. She burned thru staff as vp and apparently did not prepare for meetings. Yet, some argued she had changed during this time, but there was little evidence of her change during tenure as vp.
