I have seen almost all handstand tutorials on youtube. This one is the best usage of 5 minutes. Short and to the point. Very high quality information. This channel seriously deserves tons of more subscribers.

Thanks a lot for the tip regarding the muscles under your shoulders and how they should be engaged. This is information you don't hear often but I noticed that I'm a lot more stable if they are working and I'm pressing out of the shoulders.

I do handstands and walking. But you are at another level.

Hello David. It is important that you keep a daily practice routine of about 20 minutes. It is good to keep the technical tips in mind but it takes very long for the body to find its balance. I am going to publish a training schedule on my facebookpage soon.

Thank you, if you have good core strength you can do handstands safely. With good core strength you don't need to push your shoulders up to the maximum.

I have a few students that have the same problem. You are right to focus on keeping your feet well together. For the hips, the most important is to drill the right form. I find that a good trick is to practice standing with your eyes closed, and do a lot of hollow positions on the ground. Focus on the alignment of your thighs compared to your lower back. If they're well aligned, don't worry too much about the specific muscles and just drill it a lot so you don't have to think about it.

Very interesting, informative, and impressive. Perhaps if I had been able to view something like this video back in 1958, when I first purchased a copy of HANDBALANCING by Prof. Paulinetti and Bob Jones, I would have mastered the art within a short period of time?! I kept starting and stopping for over a half century!?!? Your video has inspired me to practice handbalancing for at least 30 minutes daily from May 1, 2014 to May 1, 2015. I will keep you abreast of the results at 3 month intervals. I think it ought to be fascinating to see what kind of progress a "senior citizen" can make in this particular physical pursuit. I will refer back to your videos for continued inspiration over the next twelve months. ,-}

Hi Herb, that sounds great! I dont think there is an age limit to practicing handstands. It is a great challenge for everyone. Keep going!

Herb April Hello Herb, I am happy to read that you are so inspired to practice handstands. I think handbalancing is a great exercise for people of any age. I hope your handstands have improved in this year.

yes handstand push-ups are a very good way to build strength for your handstand. Dont worry about the blood rushing to your head as long as you feel good.

Hello Danny, when I say that you need to use your turn out muscles I mean that you use them to stabilize your position and because it is a useful hint for people to understand which muscles I mean. You dont actually have to turn out your feet. Most people dont notice this because they dont have a very big turn out. But it sounds useful to think of your ankles touching. I will keep that in mind.

Thanks for this! I got injured in a handstand class and I want to try again when I'm healed, but I've been worried that the things I've learned to avoid in physical therapy might be important for a strong handstand. But your tips about externally rotating the arms, using the serratus anterior, and not overusing the upper trapezius all work with what I've learned is important for my shoulders. It's great to see that I can protect my shoulders and still aspire to the things you do!

With daily practice you can slowly increase your strength. It takes time but its very rewarding.

Hi Natalie, Great instructional video! I am doing your daily handstand practice routine and showing improvements in my handstand as my strength and endurance improve. I am unclear about the use of the "turnout muscles". Do you mean to turn the feet out or in when in h.s.? Can you advise?

Thanks for the video. I always use my turn-out muscles when I'm in any kind of straddle or split variation, but when I'm in a straight handstand, I focus more on keeping the inside of my ankles and toes are touching. My knees hyperextend quite a bit so if I turn out there is 10cm+ between my heels. I find it easier to get into the proper body position when using the turn-out muscles though. But I like to have the thighs, knees, and ankles touching. Do you have any thoughts or advice?
