I use a technique that fits exactly with what you're saying. I learn languages mostly with music. You first hear sentences, then you get to pronounce and read them. Music sticks to your head and is also easy to remember (hard to forget should I say). I learned German that way and I understood it quite well before I even opened a grammar book. (Now I'm trying it with Russian)

+Benoit Verret Thanks so much for your feedback, I appreciate that much! Whoa, this is something even tougher, I mean learning foreign language through music as you can not always here all words and phrases properly (unless you follow along with lyrics/subtitles ;) ) But it's a great approach, I agree. Keep up the great work and let me know about your progress!
@benverret79689 жыл бұрын
Well, before going on learning the lyrics, I think it makes sense to listen to a lot of your target language. I also use spaced repetition software to learned words IN sentences. Because learning words out of context is pointless lol.
@Learningtoknowrussian9 жыл бұрын
+Benoit Verret That's even better! This is what I call a "scientific approach" :D Kudos to you and your creative way of language learning ;)

@benverret79688 жыл бұрын
I'm here. The software I use for spaced repetition is called Anki. It's free software (except for the iOS version). I found audio sentences from sites like 50languages and I created flashcard decks with it. And then, for the music part of learning. I really only learn lyrics so I never forget. It works quite well.

It's actually what I've dreamed for all the time. You explained everything excellent. I'm from Turkey(I'm 16), I've learned English without grammar and I have been always better than other students who were learning "grammar" and "word" memorizers. I just used the language itself, it was imressive absolutely. I also did the same thing for Japanese. Then I started to learn Norwegian, even though I've studied it for 6-7 months, I just learned grammar but I have never had a conversation with a native Norwegian face-by-face or even voice-by-voice. It was a shameful fail for me. Now I'm learning Russian, when I saw grammar tables I said to myself "What are these, really? These are such nonsenses, I can learn them naturally just like I did in English, I will use them and then I will learn the rules later.".... And it really works, there was no way for me to memorize all the tables of course, I hate memorizing. Even though there have been almost a week since I started to learn Russian, I can speak it without any hesitations, better than I do in Norwegian. Of course I do a lot of mistakes, however my friends correct my mistakes about it. Also we also have 6 cases in Turkish so it makes Russian easier for me.(I'm not counting Vocative, because it is not that common as I can see, and also we don't have vocative case in Turkish) I will get used to everything anyway, I am not ashamed of my mistakes because at least I'm trying my best. And I saw this beautiful video... It gave me more motivation to learn Russian more and more. Thank you so much for your suggestions.

Memorization is the process of committing something to memory. It does not matter what rout you use, you can't learn anything with memorization, you do memorize all the time, always. Using memorization techniques, focus in actively be aware of memorization with the goal of active recall. There is a point in learning anything that, if you used mnemonics you won't need to use them further. You memorize 700 words in the language, strategic words, and if you practice and master the use of them, to learn more of the target topic you use the learned words instead of memorizing more words. Things I will memorize in learning a language, in the same order of importance: the grammar, a limited amount of words and verbs, pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions (if practical, I wouldn't do it for Russian, for that better memorize common phrase that I care to use). Techniques I'd use: method of Loci, major system (anything with numbers), memory peg for keywords (if needed). Rote memorization, never.

its not the cases or verb conjugation thats hard, because eventually it becomes consistent. The hardest part for me now is learning words like "to open" (открываю) and "to be late" (опаздываю); they all are simple verbs but are so hard to memorize since they sound similar and are long AF. Anyone got tips to overcoming this or will it just become easier overtime?

I don't have problems memorizing grammar tables, in fact, I've already memorized Russian cases, my real problem is memorizing long words in Russian, I try to memorize them by their sounds, but still, it's hard to commit them to memory, mostly because the sounds make no sense to me, they sound like nothing I know from European languages, very few cognates...

Joe Dove That's a great idea! You are absolutely right: it helps a lot playing with your imagination while learning a foreign language (it does apply to any language). Yes, You will be able to ask a person how to get to library (in perfect Russian) but you won't have a clue what he/she is saying in giving you the directions. Dennis. The unfortunate fact is this. You learned most of your Russian in what I call the "sponge years" i.e, years 1-5. During these years years a person can absorb (soak up) several languages virtually simultaneously. Because Russian is particularly illogical and difficult, it is very hard for a middle aged English speaker to learn it. In fact Russian is 12 times more difficult than English. So it takes 12 years to learn what a native Russian speaker can master in English in 1 year. However a little is better than none.
