This video much more better than most videos on you tube nowadays. Most of them they just create the videos base on the sponsor or tell us to buy their course.

I recommend Skritter for remembering 汉字 (chinese characters) for the following reasons. (1) It has a good selection of pre-made vocabulary decks. (2) It forces you to write out the entire character on the app (as opposed to merely asking you whether you remember a particular word), thereby forcing you to recall all the strokes involved in writing the characters. It also corrects you if you get the stroke order wrong. (3) Like Anki, they also utilise the spaced repetition technique to determine which flashcards to show you. (4) It integrates with Pleco, the dictionary app, which means you can look up words on Pleco very quickly. (5) It gives you example sentences. (6) It is able to read out the words and sentences.

Some mediaplayer for windows, android and ios and allmost every video editing software have slow motion function with retention of pitch. By means of applying those to screencasts and video downloads of too fast spoken samples, one can transform "real world spoken language" into learning material.

Very eloquent, loved your video, excellent advice and thank you for providing all the links. I do have a question however, I am currently learning Russian, been studying for about a month now and Ive also been very interested in learning Mandarin at the same time. How would you recommend going about learning 2 new languages at the same time?.. I dont like to make excuses but I do have 2 jobs and go to college full time, so i dont have a whole lot of time but ive had enough to put 10-25 minutes a day studying Russian via Dualingo. Its been pretty effective I think but again, would you recommend going at 2 very different languages at the same time? Or would focusing on one at a time be more efficient and effective for becoming fluent in both over time?.. I do understand it is not an overnight process but I am motivated purely out of personal interest.

+Mitchell Stallard Russian and mandarin are both very challenging languages, so it could be difficult to pick them both up at the same time. I would recommend that you put the majority of your available time into one, and a smaller amount into the other. If you split it 50/50 you risk diluting your efforts too much and not really progressing with either

Anything wrong with just using Bopomofo/Zhuyin to type Chinese? Quicker than typing out Pinyin and you don't need software to do it.

I've had several stabs at learning Mandarin always ending in failure. The main problem is lack of native speakers to talk to and a TOTAL lack of confidence in talking. I tried to order "2 pieces of fish" at a chinese restaurant and they had no idea what I was trying to say :) There is a good site called verbling but it is mainly European languages. I think what I need is some good skype partners that can be patient while I struggle with pronunciation. :)

Hello! What podcasts in Chinese would you recommend? What do you usually listen to? I listen to 美国之音, but I don't like the format, not too many new words, but too long.

+Elena Kolomina For instructional podcasts, I really like Popup Chinese. They cover a lot of really random vocab and slang that you're not going to find in a coursebook. Even their beginner dialogues are full speed and very native, so a bit daunting at first, but in the long run I've found this has helped my listening a lot. You have to be a bit careful because they often teach Beijing Mandarin and pretend it's standard but even with this I've found them really useful.

ANY app that creates files on your device, as Pleco does, needs permission to access your file system. For example, Pleco creates files to store your flashcard choices. It can't do this unless you give it permission to access your file system, which includes media, etc.

Why do we even need to write the characters in their stroke order? I mean, we can write an a with the “o” first and then the “line thing”, or the other way around... it’s strange but it doesn’t affect the meaning at all, does it?
@anonymous1177
@anonymous1177 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree with you when it comes to translating stuff early in your learning career. You will most likely end up using textbook phrases and/or get stuck because you don't know the syntactic rules yet. Unless you have a native speaker at hand, this is outright bad. I would always advise to focus on listening and reading first, just doing translations from Chinese to your native language and have a native speaker check your translation. That's a point you totally missed - you need a tandem partner sooner or later or you will fail because you never use the language.

I agree with almost al of this advice.I don't agree with Pinyin.Pinyin is a TERRIBLE pronunciation guide for the Chinese language. It matches up poorly with spoken English. There has to be a phonetically better system than Pinyin.

+Dave Stang Pinyin was NEVER intended to be a phonetic interpretation of the characters for Westerners! SO your basic assumptions are all incorrect. Are the consonants and vowels pronounced as in English? NO! Is it simply one more layer of work necessary to understand Mandarin? Yes! Pinyin was NEVER intended to accommodate English speakers, but rather to transition Mandarin into a Romanized character version. So yes, you do need Pinyin as well as characters to function in China. And no, Pinyin is NOT a phonetic system for Westerners! So, you get to learn the Chinese pronunciations for Pinyin - as well as signs used in China.
@alex73217

English doesn't pronounce letters the same everytime, so in that regard pinyin ks already a step better. Also, you pronounce letters different in every language, pronouncing a word in my native language German is completely different than saying the same letter combination in English. So for most languages you have to learn how to pronounce the letters of that language. The same is right for pinyin, spend a few hours studying/practicing all the pinyin and it will be fine and you know how to pronounce pinyin (pinyin pronunciation makes more sense than English)
