I've been learning German for the past few years and it seems that I've been a pretty fast learner. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that I've spent quite a bit of that time playing videogames with German localization, reading German novels or novels translated into German, and watching German videos and movies, which I find a lot more enjoyable than just going through textbooks.

Hi, Gideon, my name is Naomi, and I am an American who is currently learning the Irish language, on my own, from a constantly-evolving collection of materials. I want to say that I really enjoy your videos, and I find them helpful and inspiring, even though they have nothing directly to do with Irish. In particular, I resonated with what you stated in this video about the Zone, and the state of FLOW. I wouldn't be able to continue my own studies day after day, if I didn't have methods of attaining that state of mind, and it's good to know that I'm doing something right when I lose myself for periods of time in my language learning. Many have been the times in which hours have disappeared as if by magic as I gleefully look up word after word, building mental bridges between the disparate elements of language I have collected. There is a particular state of manic joy which occurs when something I'm discovering slots neatly into some other piece of information that I learned in the past, and a whole new range of understanding suddenly unfolds in my mind. In those moments I feel that way a scientist or archaeologist must feel as they uncover a previously hidden truth, or unearth some lost chapter of the past... it's exhilarating to say the least. My favorite tool/practice for achieving this state of mind is a series of journals I'm keeping into which I am attempting to contain all of the language I'm learning, as I learn it. The books are divided into sections that correlate to areas of speech as I understand them, and thus they are very accessible to my brain because they are also a product of my brain. As I work, I am essentially creating the language-learning reference book that I WISH already existed, so the process of discovery is also a creative project. I am never happier than when I am darting from dictionary to grammar book to online dictionary to KZbin, to... wherever, and all the glorious words are falling like snow into my mind... it's worth getting out of bed for, I can tell you that much!

My best method of learning is to use your videos for a dictation.Yes, it's listening, writing and reading,after that the info is useful and I have fun.Well,the subtitles aren't so proper all of the time but it's better then nothing.So, thanks a lot and break a leg ;) Stay mellow

Thank you very much! This video is full of advice. I am fluent in Russian because it's my mother tongue. I am almost fluent in Lithuanian because I live in Lithuania and work here as a University lecturer. I have been studying Italian for 4 years. English was my "working" language because I am an IT lecturer and used to use it for creating a curriculum of the subjects. Since my school childhood, I speak English terribly with an incorrect accent like many Russians born in the USSR. We didn't need to speak English because we used it only for reading topics and for translating them. It was so boring! :-D a Few years ago unexpectedly I found that English is as beautiful as Italian is! Now I have an objective: to learn to speak English as better as possible for me. I'm learning English and my best way to do it is through reading books: I started by listening to an audiobook while reading the book at the same time. Watching movies with English subtitles helped me a lot! And, of course, I'm watching KZbin videos made by such nice teachers like you!

First, I would like to say I enjoy your channel tremendously. I found it through my adoration of books and language. I am in the process of simultaneously learning two languages, Dutch and Turkish. I am finding the Turkish language easier to pick up. Intellectually, Dutch should be the easier language for me to learn as I am a native English speaker and Dutch and English come from the same parent language. I think, Turkish is coming more quickly due to finding my “Zone” more readily. As I mentioned earlier, l love books...but more importantly I love a good story. I have found no end to Turkish content on KZbin and on paper. I am struggling to find similar in Dutch. I am not widely fond of reality tv, which seems less like reality and more like contrivance, which eliminates a lot of the current Dutch television programming. I do love to cook, so my last trip to Aruba in addition to purchasing Judas in the Dutch language, I purchased two cookbooks hoping that they would help me find my Dutch “Zone”. I am open to any and all suggestions if you or any of your followers know any good Dutch stories. I am open to books, tv and/or movies. I do find that hearing native speakers really helps me with pronunciation and am really looking for something with an audible content. In a separate video, you mentioned reading a classic in a language you are learning and that is something I hadn’t considered reading a classic translated into the language I am learning, lots of good stories there. ☺️ Teşekkürler! Hi! I'm learning Japanese and I'm enjoying it most of the time but as for every long term activity sometimes I lack a bit of motivation. The remedy I fond working quite well for me is learning kanji by getting into calligraphy, it makes this hard, slow, and sometimes frustrating process into a fun art class. It definitely helps a bunch to avoid relying too much on motivation alone. Finding ways to enjoy the process of learning itself is definitely the most reliable advice to give a language learner in my opinion! Cheers!

I learned english because I love to watch tv shows. I had some basics before but not even enough to have conversation. Then I spent a year watching tv shows and improved to a B2 and now I'm C1. Honestly just use what you normally enjoy doing in your language and do it in the language you want to learn.

Actually , I feel a strong relationship between me and English language, it's a part of me . I also like grammar, but after I’m exposed to the target language, notice new sentence constructions, try to solve the puzzle and then grammar gives me the answer. If I learn grammar in isolation, it’s okay, I feel like I’m making progress, but it isn’t as fun

I am scientist and I understand the "zone" because I get into this phase when I am analysing the data and preparing a talk/ paper. English is my third language but it deteriorated when I learned Italian. I enjoyed to learn Italian to understand the world around (I was in Italy) and I loved lyrics and music. But when in lodon, my ex boss dumped me so.much that I was not a native speaker that I got concern even to write. Sometimes I feel handicap due to his comments. It's very hard to work for a perfectionist. I wish to have time to learn languages and express myself better in all of them:)

I find it too difficult to perfectly know more than two languages. The more I study English, the more I acknowledge I still have a lot to learn. My mother tongue is Spanish and I was able to speak French pretty well, however, I'm losing my French for lack of practice, but I personally can't mix both foreigner languages (English and French). My advice to you is to focus on less material to learn. Better learning a few flawlessly than a lot of macaronic languages. Life is long enough, you will have time to learn, believe me. You've found your path, now follow it little by little.

I agree with everything you said. This is so true, very accurate and makes perfect sense. Remember all stages of learning a foreign language as an adult, I'm still learning. You're an extra ordinary teacher, Gideon. Learning a foreign language it's on going process which never ends, not supposed to. There is always a lot of knowledge and skills to acquire, a lot of vocabulary to memorize including the one I call 'smart and sophisticated'. In this case, being greedy is acceptable and works well. ;) The most amazing is to start feeling the spirit of the this new language. In my opinion every language is somehow like a living organism therefore I'm talking about spirit. I discovered this phenomenon and recognized the beauty of English by listening Leonard Cohen /speaking/, in many interviews I've been watching. Answering questions, he was able to express his mind deeply without loosing a single word. Simply a master of articulation. His writing represents another level or artistry. This is what the language is about. Yes, when listening Leonard Cohen's speech I'm in the state of flow. Exactly. The understanding is easy, gets into me and magically takes me to... another dimension. I almost feel as if English is my first language. Isn't it ridiculous. (?) For sure it is.

As for me, to reach this state I usually read detective stories, at the beginning I struggle to read, but towards the end of a story, I become so intrigued, that I can't stop reading, craving to know what happens in the end.

For most of my life I never got in the zone. I don´t get in the zone easily because I have a mind that diverges alot, I like alot of subjects . I start alot of things and don´t finish most, disorder and unfinished things accumulate around me and friction increases if I don´t do something about it. Something that helped me to get in the zone is to understand myself, I used Jordan Petersons big 5 personality model, which gave me the vocabulary to describe who I am, not very industrious, average orderly, neurotic, extroverted, stubborn, which sounds bad but its just who one is and there is no shame in that. For a long time my goal has been french, and I feel good about it this time, as you beautifully put it, I am "engenieering my success" and I am not relying on a curriculum. Very informative, thank you!!!

I haven't read that book but I know what you were talking about. I agree with you and have a lot to add but won't. Just a little bit))) We all have OUR emotions: negative or pozitive. It's individual. And the very major thing at all of this it's our ability to create inside us a world that we glad to feel, concatrate our attention and consciousness in good way. BUT this ability we will not achive without problems and bad feelings which we must experience: we cannot cognize or make intelligible good thing without the same with bad thing. And at the end we have to make a choice, find the strength and just do it! Only then we can ACHIEVE the constant feeleng of satisfaction and this life flow without doubts and recognize the word "responsibility" from other side of mind as an ability to communicate! I know this state of mind since I was a child, 'cause I used to read intensively and I forgot about the time and everything else. Later it was the same with drawing, and with learning French; this last one I could reach a quite good level without setting foot in a French-speaking country. I moved to Britain but did not have enough motivation to study English.All those conventional language schools, esol, well it was just depressing really, perhaps i wanted more challenge and so. once upon a time my life crushed and i was wandering on the streets under the rain.. suddenly i spotted a book in a black cover lying by the rubbish bin. it turned out to be a Bible (not that of king James edition, a readable one), I picked it and started reading it.. WOW I was not too religious in terms of rituals etc, but that when I realised that the text in the Bible reflects the deepest content ever, and it is given sparsely, let's say, it doesn't go into detail, you must get into that flow and it starts showing up, or rather engulfing you... I read Old and New Testaments and that helped me to learn to express myself in Engish, first in writing, subsequently, I became fluent to such a degree that I did MA at uni, enjoyed it a lot and even got complimented on my writing. Since then I have read the Bible in my native language. Informal education hah .. currently, translating is my main and favourite occupation

Just wanted to add that Gideon is simply the best, he is not only about the rules etc, but clearly, a person who loves English and at the same time he is not a type of a bore: "look'ere, I'll tich ya". Guess, he has some mixed nationality background, could be half French perhaps? Lots of charisma))

Hey teacher! Thank you for mentioning the Flow concept , I agree it’s extremely important to find your own flow in the area you want to succeed. You have to focus on the things you are interested in and do not disperse yourself to all available information. As for me, I come back to my favorite books and enjoy reading it in English. In my case at the time with the English: I connected it with the passion of films…so I started to watch everything in English (+ sub in English). With the learning of German i did many things together Tandems+German Netflix series+language courses, etc. Usually with the multi-faceted approach wins. Yes it takes a lot of time.

Suggestion: Setting the stage/environment within the mind for maximizing focus. Enthusiasm, which one can choose through visualizing and feeling the success want to achieve. This will lead to inspiration to passion to capability to accomplishment. Enjoyment makes one's mind more subtle and focused. Consciousness is a powerful tool... learning how to get one's self out of it's way is a process of unlearning or letting go of limitations we have placed on ourselves. I speak quite well English but my writing is very poor for PhD type of roles in London I am applying for. I have been struggling to get into this competitive job market and without a network, the cover letter is really the only way to sell myself. Do you might to give me some tips? I also resonate with the points from my fellow English teacher made here, it's best to find enjoyable & productive ways to learn a language that fits YOU! I like using flash cards for writing/reading Japanese Kanji on an app called anki, but many find it extemely boring; I would never watch kid shows for learning, but I know one person who liked to learn listening in British English from the children's show Peppa Pig! The only priviso is, please talk to others in the language even if you sometimes make mistakes, as it's important to understand that mistakes are part of learning rather than just 'frustrating', and can be funny if you accept them! Good luck everyone! P.S. Eudaimonic sounds like a good band name, thanks for the new vocab!
