Why? WHY can’t they find people like you to teach our kids the basic fundamentals of the financial success? It’s heart breaking what these corrupted Marxist teacher unions and politicians do to the generations of young Americans! I wish you all the happy retirement and long, lioooong, wholesome and interesting life together, because it’s not that you are so smart and wise people, it’s that it’s obvious that you love each other and respect each other! I showed this video to my kids who are 20 and 13 and they we so impressed and enlightened.. God Bless you and your beautiful children!! From the bottom of my heart!
@jdthompson57784 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on reaching FIRE! I thought I heard you say once you were 59, you were thinking of drawing your Roth and HSA accounts first before your 401k assets. For tax reasons, that seems to be backwards. I would recommend drawing down the 401ks first and at the same time also convert as much as possible to Roth so they will be tax free forever.. Goal would be to have as low of a 401k balance as possible at 70 when RMDs hit. You could end up in a very high tax bracket if you wait for RMDs to hit-especially if you end up with pension and social security (It will be there) on top at 65-70. Those RMDs can send your taxes soaring and no way to stop it then. Taxes. Plenty of time for you to go but watch out! I’d draw down / convert 401k to Roth IRAs as soon as you hit 59 1/2!!

Can someone explain what the difference is between VTSAX & VTI ... I looked on Vanguard and they hold the same things. Aren’t they both considered passive management funds that follow the index? One costs more I think? I’m not sure why! I have Vanguard 2045 Target date IRA but I’m thinking that’s taking more money in fees vs if I just buy the ETFS within the IRA. Am I right?
@dapoolagbaju12394 жыл бұрын
Smart strategy but if I were you I will wait on taking from the ROTH 1st because of RMD on your 401k which increases because of percentage required to distribute in retirement which may also affect your taxes you pay as well in the later part. You need to check out RMD Percentage table for your calculations. My option will be the 401k 1st so that you draw that down and later tap into the ROTH option. My 2cents. Great job guys.

Pretty good content, I might add that rule of 72 for 9 years is a 8% estimate it can fluctuate in either direction. Secondly if you guys have pensions, why not look into seeing if your company will offer to lump some them out and put them in a traditional ira then back door them to your roth ira if you want. This way if you die etc. etc. it does not die with the pension fund and you have all the control. Unless its some type of public pension and you have no options but pensions are becoming a thing of the past in the private sector and very rapidly

As a long-term Vanguard investor , I like the simplicity of your message. Many times the financially savvy folks on bogleheads.org (informational website for Vanguard investors) can get bogged down in stats that I simply think are overkill. Both Buffet and Bogle have preached simplicity for the average investor. I am glad young folks are realizing to rely on the government (SS) for your retirement $$ is hazardous. Many folks my age (59) did and are in serious trouble as they undersaved or worse, have no savings. They overestimated the value of SS. I've seen some writing on withdrawal strategy - stocks first, then bonds. Hopefully you can explore this as well. Thanks!

Retired from a federal law enforcement position at 53 but with a full pension and a SSA supplement until 62 so haven't had to touch my TSP which has grown nicely the past 7 years. Also have worked part time so have been able to contribute to a Roth in the mean time to play with. I guess my "biggest" problem in life is the taxes I'm going to have to pay on my TSP which is entirely pre tax at my marginal rate. Probably should start biting the bullet now as it clearly is going to get lower any time soon.

And the Trinity study is from a different era in bond returns - bond returns starting now are going to be way less than they were even just 20 years ago! Not only are interest rates 1/2 or less, but because interest rates are so low, they are most likely to increase. Increasing interest rates is a significant negative to bond returns, especially if in a bond fund. 20 years ago bond fund returns were enhanced by falling interest rates (a good tailwind since the early 1980's but nothing left now but a final puff).

Hello. Thanks for sharing. Might be a better idea to draw down the 401k first since you will be required to take minimum withdrawals in your early 70s. This could lead to big taxes especially if one of you are widowed at that point. Roths never have these requirements. They are even tax advantaged even when passed to on to children.

You are right in the amount of saving. People I knew who lost jobs in 2009 and afterwards took at least a year or more to find another job and usually a lower salary. It could happen again. Having said that my advice to my sons was to start a pension of their own when they started working after uni even if it is the minimum amount allowed by the pension provider and ditto an investment account. The minimum hs no impact on them when taken at te start of the month and it will mount up over time and they have plenty of that as well as hopefully increasing the amounts. You might consider doing that as well Good luck

Actually I still have friends and family that make fun of me. I’m thankful for KZbin and I’m going to keep saving. I’m also getting better at investing. Thank you for the reply. I wish I had more people in my life that didn’t live pay check to pay check.

Maybe go outside your genera a bit an do one vlog on the exciting things to do in the city? Being cooped up in an apartment seems a bit boring. One of the questions people always have is how do early retirement people cope without the 9 to 5.

We were actually thinking about doing a video on that - sharing what our day/week looks like in early retirement in Portugal. We actually spend most of our day outside of our apartment! :)

Financial investment can be emotionally exhausting/frustrating in a case where inconsistency in trade wins is much. Positive results are guaranteed more if one works with a reliable professional. My most sincere take though!!

*I'm 51 years old with no retirement plan yet,any suggestions on accumulating a million dollar portfolio within 12-18 months? I have currently saved a capital of $225k*

I quit work at age 52 and 7 1/2 years later am confident I will be able to sustain my retirement principal the rest of my life. Right now I have a 60/40 mix the 60 being corporate bonds, cds and rental property ,, the 40 being individual stocks .. the corporate bonds will be called at age 65 at which time I plan on taking my social security check and will use the bond principal to purchase another fixed income investment .. my annual fixed income is $40k and I have a studio condo in Thailand which is very inexpensive to live and a studio condo on the Gulf Coast outside of New Orleans another place that is affordable compared to other parts of the US .. this is really not rocket science .. #1 is to pay of all debt and #2 is what is your expenses versus your income .. this year I will live in the US 27 weeks .. Thailand 20 weeks .. Vietnam 3 weeks and Italy 2 weeks so you see I like variety and am able to move around .. at some point if am able to have a safe income of $50k to $75k with medicare until the age of 95 and be out of stocks 100% I would gladly take the risk and volatility out of my portfolio ..

and since everyone saves and earns differently my nest egg was built by individual stocks and real estate property

Kenneth - LOVE your retirement plan. Thanks for sharing the details! Also, we are huge fans of Thailand! We actually thought about moving there, too! :) Do you prefer the US/Thailand/Vietnam/Italy moves to avoid the visa requirements in foreign countries or do you simply prefer to move to different locations? We are constant movers! :)

@@OurRichJourney At first I was going to just retire in Thailand but after going back and forth you see different advantages. I look forward to what each place has to offer. If you have nice set up in the U.S. we have a lot of great things too. I like Spring/Fall weather in U.S. and it is always very hot in Thailand. I live near New Orleans so I can see Sports, Jazz Fest and friends during these times. I also like to cook and in U.S. I have access to a lot of great herbs and seafood. In Thailand I always eat out because it is so inexpensive. You have the massage therapy in Thailand $10 for 1 1/2 hours maybe 4 to 5 a week which you would not do in the U.S. And adding in Vietnam ,Bali etc you can maximize your Visa stays. So yes, for me I like the variety and change and meeting new places and people for now. There are things that I can do in Thailand that there is no way I could afford in the U.S. Example being I start my first stem cell treatment next week which involves stem cell iv plus prp/stem cell injections into my arthritis joints. I used to work as casino dealer and have neck and back pain so hopefully this will be "the fountain of youth". This treatment is costing me $8000 and is the same treatment that Dr Neil Riordan offers in Panama. Hope this hopes because we were very lucky to be born in America and if are smart are able to live healthy and happy life! kzbin.info/www/bejne/haWvYpl7etl_l6M

Got it. I know you buy real estates sometimes, what about businesses? We are looking for ways to transform our earned income into portfolio income right away

They were fortunate (and wise!) to invest in real estate in a time of skyrocketing prices and sell - I believe - near it's peak. What worked for them isn't easily replicated. Even if don't achieve those high returns, a side hustle can be a good source of extra income (but also time consuming...). Just don't take too much financial risk by increasing your debt.
