Great video, but one thing I have a comment on...Yes, you cannot grow back nephrons and repair scarred kidneys. However, people can absolutely increase there kidney function and.by a high number as well. So I'm not sure why he said, "Once that GFR is gone it's not coming back."

ACE inhibitors are good however they tend to cause an increase in potassium. Many kidney patients have elevated potassium so ACE inhibitors cannot be used due to risk of death from high levels of potassium.

@@barrycameron8469 You made a sweeping statement that the ACE inhibitors can not be used due to risk of death because they increase potassium level. In fact they are the first line of defence when some has just started CKD and doctors decide whether or not ACE inhibitors are good for individuals based on several test including GFR. You are a prime example of spreading scare on social media because of your half baked knowledge!

ACE inhibitors can raise serum potassium levels. Their use will depend on the individual and their lab history, stage of CKD, etc. Many people with CKD are on them and don't have issues with potassium though!

What’s the name of the vitamin d that we should take?
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 7 ай бұрын
Vitamin D3 is generally what is supplemented over the counter and can help maintain normal serum Vitamin D levels. In this video, Dr. Hashmi discusses Calcitriol which is an active form of vitamin D. It is often prescribed in people with kidney disease that have hyperparathyroidism. It is a prescription and not everyone with CKD needs/should be on it so definitely talk with your doctor about it!

hello I just finished listening to your pod cast on Proteneria,. It is a little confusing becase at the end very quickly was mentioned about eatinglentils, nuts, seeds. Not so fast many of those products will react differently to the kidney for sure. Just check out chia seeds not good for the kidneys. Plus if you are going to mention a product that is highly recommended how but spelling the name of the product and suggesting how much to take. Rattling the names off does not give anyone a chance to even write the name down to even ask your Dr or the pharmacist.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 7 ай бұрын
Hello! Chia seeds are definitely not bad for the kidneys are can be part of a kidney protective diet...we aren't recommending any specific product in this video. Just discussing that getting more whole plant foods in the diet (fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains), especially in place of animal protein can help kidney health and proteinuria. Of course everyone will have different nutrient needs and need different portions.

Can you eat too much plant protein and cause an issue? I sometimes get 70g a day of plant protein. I know that plant protein doesn’t all get absorbed like animal protein. I guess I just wondered if higher plant protein could have a negative impact like animal protein. And is 70g too much? Need extra due to muscle loss. For reference, I had proteinuria and a gfr of 82 when I was keto (for medical reasons) Gfr fluctuates between 95 and 114 now on a plant based diet. Haven’t rechecked proteinuria yet. Will do that in Sept. Thanks!

For earlier stages of kidney disease, a lower protein diet isn't as crucial. And when it's more plant protein it isn't as hard on the kidneys. The general recommendation is to avoid excessive protein intake in earlier stages of CKD which would be not going over 1.2 grams protein per kilogram body weight.

Would it be common to have a lot of urine bubbles when I exercise (hike, bike, weights) for a few days but if I have a week of not doing much the bubbles are smaller and much less. Protein in my urine but GFR ok.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 7 ай бұрын
Exercise can induce short term proteinuria (which is why you may see bubbles only when exercising more intensely). This does not mean that exercise is harmful though and should be avoided. If you abstain from moderate-high intensity exercise for 24-48 hours prior to bloodwork/urinalysis you can get a more accurate picture of kidney function.

My P.A. prescribed jariance but my insurance won't cover it so its too expensive. So I just stay with metformin. I have been going to the gym for a year and now try to eat 1g protein per pound instead of per kilogram. Meanwhile i've lost 20 lbs and my a1c has dropped below 6. That and proteinuria are the only things showing asterixes in my latest battery of blood tests.
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth
@PlantBasedKidneyHealth 7 ай бұрын
Congrats on being consistent with the gym and losing weight/improving A1c! Those are so important! For the proteinuria, avoiding excessive protein intake is important. It is generally recommended for people with CKD to not go over 1.3 grams of protein per kilogram body weight. Would definitely recommend working with a specialized renal dietitian so they can look at your labs, stage of CKD, body composition and work out to make an individualized rec to help lower the protein in the urine. plantbasedkidneys.com/resources/#dietitian
