To make a bits box when you've got no money, you gotta get creative.

A good bits box was essential to making my nurgle diaries series and just about everything else I've ever done related to miniatures or props or kitbashing. Hope this helps.

Also: in thrift stores, check the bottom of kids toy bins and shelves. Next to disgusting grossness, there are often cool small plastic parts, and if you ask nicely, you often get them for free :)

Oh man, so true. I walked into a local friendly game store, very magic-focused, to pick up a few boosters for my 9 year old son who was with me, and one by one, three gamers each came up to him to say hi, and give him a few cards. One guy grabbed a fist-full of cards, easily 100+ of commons and stuff he didn't need... And just handed it to him, saying have fun, he does this for all new, younger players. My heart grew three sizes. It was so touching.

The terrain kit is a fun idea! And yes, as someone with a 3D printer: half my bits are failed prints! Hammers, mermaids, simple plates or clock parts. And if I weren't in a building hobby, I would throw them out.

I have that exact little tool box... on another note I hit up my local thrift stores and dollar stores on a semi regular basis. Grabbed some cheap sci-fi toys that I based and repainted for some aliens and a big ass war bot for Stargrave. Toys looked like crap, but with a decent paint job they look as good as a $45 GW model. I also buy cheap model kits like WWII tanks, battleships, jets, rockets, or cars. Lots of neat little pieces you can repurpose and then I use the sprues for things like railings or pipes for terrain. Also grab any box packaging from work (I work in IT so lots of foam and cardboard from hardware) that has a neat shape to use as a base to make a terrain piece. I also tend to buy old tech like out of date printers, phones, etc. and take them apart or buy dart guns, water guns, and ever cheap spray bottles. Tons of neat pieces for terrain.

I love weird thrift store sculpture finds. I don't game but I still have lots of bits for arts and crafts. After a hundred projects or so - you have a pretty nice collection of paint, googly eyes, beads, pipe cleaners, yarn, clay, scrapbook paper, old keys, fabric, ribbon, antique photographs, a cuckoo clock........ OK, I might have a little problem. :)

I use take away containers as bits boxes for my miniatures and label them based on their respective armies, bits, etc. I've found this structure is a lot more efficient as you know where bits are located. For terrain I use the 7 litre and 5 litre food storage containers from my local supermarket. They cost about $10 to $14 Au each, so I generally wait until they're 30% to 50% off and buy them in bulk. All of these I store on my bookshelves as I've found that the one place where space is wasted are the walls. For 6-foot high bookshelves I heighten them with the 4 cube shelves from Kmart, and with the taller shelves I store small plastic storage containers on top.

This is awesome. My bits box is currently a heap of boxes and most of my shed. Generally insanely chaotic like creating in the aftermath of an explosion. This was a great video. Love the insight into the personal connection to the...bits (that could have been worded better) Also, I feel the exact way with 3d printing too. I find I am more creative when making things from found or scrap materials because I am not overly conscious of price. If I am paying a lot for materials it makes me too cautious to experiment. This isn't really a bits hack, but war gamers often forget or don't have objective markers. So cut a nice 3cm by 3cm circle out of scrap card or used printer paper and have a small stack of them available (about 6 to a dozen) and just have a marker/pen/pencil available to write a number on.
