How to Make a Box Cushion with Seamed Corners

Make your own box cushion with seamed boxing following this tutorial. This technique is the tried and true traditional way a cushion is made by using a top and bottom plate of fabric and cutting separate boxing pieces which are seamed together at each corner. Making a cushion like this means it can be made to almost any shape and size and a piping can be added, if desired. It also makes it possible to line up patterned fabric so it runs along the front to back side with patterns perfectly matched up, if desired.

THE KEY FACTS WHEN MAKING THE TRADITIONAL BOX CUSHION WITH SEAMED CORNERS:
• Moderate complexity and construction time.
• Can be a square, rectangular or irregularly shaped cushion.
• Fabric is cut separately for each side of foam (top, bottom and sides).
• Piping can be used for the top and/or bottom edges, or neither.
• A zipper is installed in the back boxing.
• All boxing pieces are seamed together at corners.
• Bottom can be decorative fabric or be a less expensive cushion

Game changer the tape . Thanks for well made video . ❤ good tip wrap foam in black bin bag /liner , slides in so easy , then pull bag out . To get a good fit whack the cushion on table , it shifts into the right place .

If you are sewing 0.5 inch seams on all sides... shouldn't the material be 1 inch in all directions to accommodate the 0.5 + 0.5 seams on all sides? I just sewed my first cushion following all the instructions and it came out too thin and small... am I missing something?

We actually want the cover fabric to compress the foam for a nice tight fit without wrinkles. That is why we make the top and bottom plate the same size as the foam and the boxing just 1/2" wider than the thickness of the foam. Yes, when you sew the 1/2" seam allowance the top and even the sides will be smaller to compress the foam. If you do not want it as large just add 1/4" more to all sides of the top plate.

thanks! yea i was really rigid on my final sizing... i was going to add a layer of thick batting to give me some more thickness in the final cusion. I remade the cushion by adding 0.5 more to the dimensions before putting them in the calculator and it put out what i needed... thanks again!@@SailriteDIY
