I recycle a lot of denims. I like this pattern because it uses larger pieces which works well for me. I have neither time nor patience for fussy, tiny little bits and getting points just right, etc. I applaud those of you who can spend 2 years on a competition king size quilt and free motion like you were doing it in the womb. I will stand in awe of your work and walk away humbled. But i am grateful for simple patterns that allow me to build durable blankets that i quilt with straight lines and send out to our troops in the field. Thanks Misty for a great quilt!

I absolutely LOVE modern quilts so please keep them coming Misty! Thanks for the free pattern. I agree the cutting diagrams have a flaw where some of the 1/2” seems to be missing, but I can easily figure that out. Another person noticed the spaces before the “ which indicates where it should read 1/2. That math works!

Loved the quilt! Like the modern lines and colors of it. I wish you had a video of how you cut it. 108” fabric is hard to maneuver, especially if you have a small cutting table. I’m too old to get down on the floor, I have to fold 42” fabric in half for it to fit on my cutting table. How many times would the 108” fabric need to be folded? Please, make a video on cutting the fabric for this quilt.

I’m confused. If you sew a 12” piece to a 4” piece, isn’t the result 15-1/2”? But the cutting directions said the next piece was 15”. And that seemed to continue throughout. I can see the labels pinned to Misty’s pieces include the 1/2”.

Yeah, not sure what happened. Several times in the video we can see that some strips ended up a bit too long but she made it work. I would rip the 108” to get a straight of grain line, then use that as a guide for cutting everything else.

Yeah, I sure didn't get the math on this. Also, the back is a different size, and it seems you would lose some of the design plan when you trim it depending on how well it was lined up for the quilting. Anyway, I'm confused.

@Cy-bz9jh

TL:DR Start with a 12" strip and repeat the pattern. Longer reply: Or the math would be pretty simple for more strips, I think. follow the Golden Ratio or go with the increasing sizes (4, 6, 10, 6, 10, 4, 16, 6, 10 - something like that) The Golden Ratio is - 0.618 to 1 to 1.618. So 4 to 6.5 to 10.5 to 17.... Your quilts will always look "perfect" because that's the ratio in nature. I did some rounding because I didn't include the seam allowances. Just keep using those numbers in different combinations like the quilt starts. Or just keep using the sequence that's already started. The longest strip you'll be able to use will be 108" which is more than you would need for a queen.

it's usually called backing fabric so that you don't have to piece the back on a larger quilt. 2 yards of 108" is 6 yards of regular fabric and can save you money in the long run on a large pieced quilt.

I’ve never given a thumbs down to ANY MSQC video. But I had to on this one. Wide fabric is very expensive. I’m no expert like you, but the sizes shown on the screen don’t add up correctly. Even considering, or especially considering, the seam allowances. It appears to me that I would end up trimming and cussing a lot if I followed your directions. I apologize if I’m wrong.

not my favorite msqc video either, nor the quilt, which to me looks too basic to bother with. as far as 108 fabric though, i buy it as often as i can because it's usually the same, or more often cheaper. there are 2.5 yards of 44" fabric in every yard of 108". example: the fabric used in this quilt is 110" and costs $18.75/yard. the most basic 44" kona solid on the msqc website is $7.48/yard. $7.48×2.5= $18.70 same price.

It looks like I’d have to buy a lot of extra fabric (can only buy .5 yds of 108 fabric from MSQ) in order to make this. Too expensive! I think I’d rather use leftovers from my stash. Cute quilt but not budget friendly.

Make quilts for charities that give them to people who have nothing. Make disappearing 9 patches for "Quilts for Kids" or children's wings in hospitals. Use the extra for around the backing of your own quilts (you do know you need 4" extra for all sides, right?) Maybe doing something nice will help your attitude. Cut up the extra and make a scrappy quilt for yourself or a friend in need of cheering up. Since you can choose colors you love for this quilt you aren't limited to just wasting it. Think outside your rather limited mindset. Quilters are known for using every scrap and being generous. Heck... puzzle piece it together and use it for your own quilt back on another quilt for yourself! I have many quilts that have pieced backs. It's only wasted if YOU choose to not use it. And bigger pieces/scale means lots to work with!!

I have chosen at times to buy 108" fabric because if I need 3 yds of regular 44" wide, I could buy either 1 yd of 108" wide or 3 yds of 44" wide. I have found the 108" yardage would be cheaper. Compare for yourself to see if that works for the fabric you are choosing from. Also I shop on sale a lot. Maybe that is why it has worked.
