What do you think are the key elements for a good psytrance bass?
@JoeyTribbiani_HYD2 ай бұрын
@@kingofdjembearound 60-350 HZ (bass to low mid range) has to be EQ’d, Compressed and Limited strongly - this In my opinion is the most important part of the sound. You can have good pluck but if there’s no bass there’s no hit. After you master these freqs, you are looking for poor resonating frequencies to remove from your psybass, leaving you with a cleaner, balanced and sometimes pluckier sound.

Of course it is a lot more surgical than this but in my opinion, 60-350 hz makes or breaks a psytrance bass

Although this demonstrates an interesting / creative use of multi band splitters as eq shapers (because they change the phase relationships), how can you talk about phase without looking at the resulting phase changes to the BASS and the relationship that this has with the KICK via an oscilloscope? I would imagine that first 1/16th note would have changed in its phase relationship to the kick...? 🤔

Thanks for the video! At 10:30 you say that there's always a little bit of low mids that you want to clean up, but didn't give any reasons for that. If you have time, could you explain a bit more? Because before cleaning up the low mids, the bass sound didn't sound bad to my ears, so I am kinda confused about why we do it.
@MiddleD3 жыл бұрын
Yes! It's important to clean out "boxy" and "muddy" frequencies in the low mids because 1: they don't sound very good on a bass sound and 2: when you start arranging your track, a lot of your leads and other instruments will have their fundamental (1st) harmonics around this area as well, and all of these things added up together will make your mix sound muddy and not very clear! So it's a good idea to already take care of it early on 😁

Incredible this class! Let me ask you a question, the volume values of the bass and kick, do you still make more volume adjustments during the mix? People always tell me that the kick has to have a ceiling of -11. I know there is no volume rule.... but i think the question is worth it! Very good class bro, continue with the videos! :D
@MiddleD3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Rodolfo! Yes, I tend to adjust the levels a little bit as I build up the mix, but the ceiling (-11dB vs -9dB vs -6dB) does not matter as much as the balance of volume between all of your elements, obviously you need to keep a certain ceiling so that your mix has headroom in the master channel when you all of your elements being played together. Make sure that your kick and bass are the loudest elements in your mixes, no matter what your ceiling level is. Also, kick and bass need to have roughly the same loudness between them.

Hey Carlos, thanks you! You can try out any multiband saturator that you can get your hands on really, unfortunately there aren't many out there. I've been dabbling with music production on and off for a few years now. Every now and then I find myself feeling a little disheartened when reaching sections of tutorials like your Multiband Processing Tip at 11:52, where you A/B the results using C4- I genuinely can't hear a difference! I know there IS a difference as I've replicated the results in Ableton using the same plugs, duplicated the tracks and used phase inversion to hear the difference. I'm still not sure whether this is something that eventually my ears will learn to detect, or whether my hearing simply can't discern between the two. Do you find yourself better able to tell these sorts of differences over time? Are there any ear training resources you would recommend? Thanks again for your awesome work! -Josh

There is no audible difference.. the reason it sounded off when phase inverted is because the crossover points fuck up the phase of the sound so technically it is different, just not audible. He's just tripping
@Konedwag2 жыл бұрын
@@visionary9575 Really? I was under the impression that phase inversion on ANY part of the audible portion of the human audio spectrum would implicitly have an audible effect? This notion you've suggested raises an important question to my inner budding engineer- if a change to an audio production isn't audible, then can we in earnest consider it to be a change at all? :P
@visionary95752 жыл бұрын
@@Konedwag phase changes aren't very audible, yes sometimes they can be heard, but in the case of a multiband compressor no.. as it's literally designed to have crossover points without audibly changing the sound. It still changes the sound by messing with the phase at the crossover points, but it is not an audible change until you try to null it with the original sound

Can someone help me understand what the benefit is of sampling the bass from Serum rather than just processing it directly? The only thing I can think of is that using the sampler might add a punchier sound because it's being cut off during the sample rather than a tone. But this for type of basic rolling bassline, couldn't you achieve the same result with an arp set to 1/16th and side chain on the first beat? Or is it just a matter of preference? Thanks for the clairfication!
