Awesome egg. I'm using the same method, using a plastic cup as a mold. And I use a small disc sander to make it so the wood isn't just flat. If you haven't tried yet, you should try adding like pearl ex powder in it or something similar.

Carbide cutters don't really make much of a difference from what he used in the video. But you can get them for around 13$ which is with a big aluminium rod to hold it, but the carbide insert themselves cost only like 16$ for a pack of 10.

I made one myself by just using some wood planks, aluminium rails and a dremel, worked like a charm. Or you can buy a proper mini lathe for like 36$ I tried the mini lathe myself and while it's small, it has a lot of power and gets the job done. Just make sure it's the right size for what you need it for.
