+Dot Freel Your comment expressed my feelings exactly - on these two tips alone. Sometimes it's good to watch videos from several sources - whether it's to get an overview of a block or quilt pattern - or to get more specific on the details and hints that make constructing a quilt that much more enjoyable - from start to finish. Just like learning a lot of things in life, seeing them from different people's perspectives just makes things "click" and you can say, "Now I get it". Watching YT videos online is why my YT name is newbeequilter -- as in newly being part of an online quilting bee (vs. in person) -- enjoying a multitude of people's ideas and instructions at any hour of the day.

!!! I inherited my grandma's sewing stash a few years back, and among her assortment of unfinished projects, there were nine clearly in-progress pieces that i had no idea what to do with, couldn't figure out what they were or even how to look for information about them. They've been sitting in a bin and now, today, this video randomly comes up on youtube suggestions (probably because i've been watching other Shabby Fabrics videos) and reveals that these unfamiliar pieces are dresden plates! What a happy surprise! Now i'll be able to finish the blocks (they have no centers yet) and put them together into a quilt!

I also liked how you quilted within the dresden plate appliques after they were attached to the background fabric. For anyone else interested, she shows a close-up of it; click on at 11:00 - the closeup shows from 11:04 to 11:10. I liked how she (or a staff member?) did the spiral in the middle circle and the variety of wavy stitching on the wedges - easy enough for a beginner to achieve, yet still very attractive and adding interest & movement as it was different from the background fabric's stippled quilting. Thanks, Jennifer!

Hi All, I followed Jennifer's video and made a wall hanging of 3 Dresden plates and I am so happy with the result. Unfortunately the Dresden ruler I bought in the UK didn't come with either alternatives or circle so, as Jennifer says I made it work. I followed her brilliant tutorial on Applique and made my own circle with Freezer Paper and turned the edge under with starch and the tools I brought from you. I have learnt so much from Jennifer's tutorials I cannot thank you enough. What a fabulous team.

I recently purchased one of those spinning mats and it smells terrible (I thought one of my pets had gotten sprayed by a skunk). Does your mat smell? What would you suggest I do with it? Thanks and keep the wonderful tutorials coming.
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
+Linda Daley ours does not smell but sometimes plastic r rubber products tend to have a strong smell when they are first removed from their packaging. Try spraying it and wiping it down with a household cleaner and letting it sit in a well ventilated area for a few days to air out.

I started making these Dresden blocks, got one almost finished, looks so pretty, BUT when all four sections are sewn together, it wants to poof up a little in the middle, doesn't lay flat for me to put the center circle on. Do you have any idea what I may have done wrong? I used the 1/4" seam allowance, but not sure what I should've done different for it to lay perfectly flat?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
+Betty Lockhart some of them have the tendency to do that! Be sure all of your seams are pressed open. The puffing issue should be solved when the middle circle is added and the quilting will help, too!

as she was saying you put small dots of Roxanne temporary basting glue all around the finished Dresden plate .. the circle should be attached at this point using the basting glue.... Place The Dresden Point centered on your background Square and hit it with the iron and it will be held in place for stitching... you can stitch just around the outside edge and top Stitch the circle or you can stitch up and down each blade on the seam line ...one of her Dresden plate look like she did decorative stitching right down the center sort of a freestyle swervy stitch ...I thought that look kind of cool
@ruthfreeman864
@ruthfreeman864 8 жыл бұрын
I forgot after you Tech the center of circle down with the basting glue and have the glue on the back of the Dresden plate itself when you Center it on your background Square hit it with an iron making sure it's centered and exactly where you want it this will hold it in place while you Stitch the glue will wash out like she said

I've started making this but I had a question. I've stitched along the top edges of the fans to secure it to the background fabric. do I have to stitch each fan along its sides to the middle as well? Or is that secured during the quilting process?
@ShabbyFabrics
@ShabbyFabrics 8 жыл бұрын
+Cheryl Pearson That is entirely up to you! If your quilting will be added over your fans then yes, they will be secured during quilting. If you would rather not quilt over your fans then I would suggest you stitch in the ditch around each fan on the background in order to secure it. This will prevent the fan from bubbling up when the quilt is quilted!

+Shabby Fabrics I'm trying to limit the amount of tools I buy - it's so easy to buy "just this one more", isn't it? However, by using them in your videos, it DOES show me by your example of using them how many ways I can too and still get my money's worth out of them - either in the way you are in a particular video or how I could use them for another project. Conversely, when I see you using a tool I haven't got, I can see the usefullness in it's application and ask myself, "What tool have I already got that could be used very similarly"? Please keep using a variety of tools for quilters of all levels so as to get the same benefits I do. Thanks for your much appreciated details and tips.

Excellent video! Great hints!! But I respectfully want to offer a suggestion. Please contain your hair back with clips. It was so distracting to watch it flick into your eyes and you very unconsciously but constantly are pushing it out of your way and tossing your head when it was unsafe for you to reach up. Had to watch the video 3 times to get all the info. Again, apologies for bringing this up but I thought it may be helpful for upcoming videos. Presentation matters. Thank you.
