For more information on this topic, read the description below or visit our blog with pictures and full instructions:
www.easysimplegardening.com/bl...
We always suggest taking an Organic approach to your garden before resorting to chemicals. Before buying a chemical insecticide, try making one with Organic and natural ingredients. In this video, we showed you how to make a neem oil insecticide with organic and natural ingredients.
Before you start:
When dealing with natural and organic insecticides there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach. Certain ingredients will only deter or kill certain bugs. Neem oil is used to control over 200 varieties of phytoph-agous insects, meaning the types of bugs that eat your plants.
Bugs like:
Aphids, leafhoppers, psyllids, whiteflies, scale insects, planthoppers, thrips larvae, mealy bugs, cabbage worms, mites, fungus, gnats, mushroom flies, locusts, Japanese beetle, Mediterranean fruit fly, Oriental fruit fly, Face fly, Horn fly, Housefly, Flea, Head lice, Spotted cucumber beetle, Mexican bean beetle, Colorado potato beetle, Flea beetle, Khapra beetle, Confused flour beetle, Japanese beetle, Red flour beetle, American cockroach, Bean aphid, Rice gall, midge, Diamondback moth, Webbing clothes moth, Gypsy moth, Corn earworm, Pink bollworm, Fall armyworm,Tobacco budworm, Tomato Hornworm, Cabbage looper, Leafminer, Serpentine leafminer, Brown planthopper, Green leafhopper, Migratory locust, House cricket, Milkweed bug, Fire ant, Boll weevil, Cowpea weevil, Rice weevil, Grasshopper, Cricket
Orthoptera insects, such as grasshoppers, crickets and locusts refuse to eat the neem oil treated plants for up to several weeks. Phloem feeders, such as aphids are not affected by the neem oil unless it is sprayed directly on the insect. Neem is effective on thrips larvae whereas adult thrips are less sensitive to the effects.
Benefits of making it yourself:
So before we get started, why are we making this rather than buying it? Well here’s a little secret. If you make it yourself, you can make it stronger than they’re allowed to sell in the stores. The ratio of neem oil is strictly regulated for manufacturers of these types of products. In fact, in some areas neem oil products are banned from being sold. Knowing this doesn’t mean we’re going to add ridiculous amounts to our concoction but we can add a splash more to make it more concentrated. A very little goes a long way. More information in the recipe below.
"Ingredients”
Neem Oil: amzn.to/3l09aKc
So this recipe is super simple, all you need is... Organic Neem Oil, water and an emulsifier. But what is an emulsifier? Since the oil and water won’t mix together on their own, the emulsifier makes this possible. An emulsifier can be nothing more than liquid soap. Some people use Silica as an emulsifier however we found the liquid soap to work better.
Here are some links to the products we used:
Neem Oil: amzn.to/3l09aKc
Silica: amzn.to/3oxq4Cs
The most important part of this is to get a good quality neem oil because it’ll have a high amount of Azadirachtin which is the active compound. So look for 100% pure, which might also be called “crude” or “raw”. Also get one that’s cold pressed because Azadirachtin gets destroyed by heat.
Recipe:
The solution we’re making is 1 1/2 tsp per quart. If you wanna experiment with a stronger solution that’s fine but I wouldn’t use more than a 1/2 tsp per quart.
Add the neem oil to the water. Then add 2 tsp of emulsifier. Shake well.
Our solution is now ready to use but how do we apply it? .... To see the full article, visit our blog

Hey! I found that neem oil insecticide mix expires after 8 hours because the neem oil starts to break down. So it's best to mix the amount you need, spray immediately and discard the rest. Repeat once every one to two weeks.
@EasySimpleGardening
@EasySimpleGardening 3 жыл бұрын
The solution should last up to 2 years in a spray bottle, however it starts losing its potency fairly quickly. Personally, I discard the solution after every use because I like it to be fresh every time I use it. Plus, a little goes a real long way.
@eltonnoway7864
@eltonnoway7864 Жыл бұрын
No... do not let it rest. Neem oil in its concentrated form is good for a couple years in a tightly sealed bottle however once it is mixed with soap and water it degrades potency very quickly so the mixture should all be used within 24 hours of making the spray solution.

Two of the most popular soap brands among gardeners are either - Dr.Bronners 18 in 1 Peppermint Castile Soap - because the peppermint scent has the added benefit of naturally deterring many common garden pests plus the peppermint scent helps to slightly mask the rather unpleasant odor of Neem oil. The other one for those who don't care for scented products use - Quinn’s Pure Castile Organic Liquid Soap. If neither are available Dawn dish washing liquid also does the trick.

I had an outbreak of these mites in and on my trash can due to the trash not being emptied for sometime, while out of town for a few weeks. I came back and thought the can was covered with dust and realized that "dust" was moving. I quickly took the entire can with contents outside to the dumpster. I discarded the garbage, and hosed down the entire can and lid with water for about 10 minutes straight. Then I let it air dry outside overnight. Then in the morning I wiped down the can before bringing it back inside, and also the counter tops, with surface wipes that contained bleach in them. Even though I removed the main source I still see a few here and there on my countertops and stove tops. Can I use this mixture on my countertops and tables? If yes, does it need to be wiped off with water afterwards or do you just leave it to sit on the surfaces? I feel like I can't throw any food in the garbage now because I'm afraid they will multiply again since they are not completely gone

Yes, it will work on indoor plants. I wouldn’t recommend spraying it around apartment openings because it doesn’t work like a normal bug spray. The insects need to consume it in order for it to work.

How do you make the neem oil at home so you dont have to buy it??
@pdfbrander
@pdfbrander Жыл бұрын
Neem oil is best used as a soil/root drench. Not only does spraying the leaves put the plant at risk from leaf burns, it's also not very effective. As you said, you are looking to wipe out the next generation of bugs. For this to happen, you need to get the Azadarachtin into the plants system. i.e. have it taken up by the roots. The poison cannot enter through the leaves, so the only benefit you get from spraying is that the plant becomes unpalatable to insects for a few days.

How do you apply it into the soil effectively for it to drench roots,
@pdfbrander
@pdfbrander Жыл бұрын
@@samanthasaia7450 Mix it as you normally would with some soap (not detergent) to emulsify and pour it on the soil under the plant. Castile soap is best. Don't use dish soap and it will be fine. EDIT: If you really do not want to use soap, you could try something like lecithin or guar gum both of which are emulsifiers. Never used them though and never had a problem using soap. However, neem is not the best solution to pests. Predicator bugs is the way to go. Put something on the plant that eats the bug that you do not want on it. All that said, simply "top dressing" with a bit of neem oil then watering it in will not hurt the plant or soil, it may break down before the plant gets at it this way though. I think you do need to emulsify it first. (Oil and water do not mix, but an emulsifier is a special kind of molecule that likes to grab a water molecule with it's "hands" and an oil molecule with it's "feet" so in the presence of an emulsifier oil and water can mix and the Azadirachtin will be taken into the plant through the root along with the water molecule. The Azadirachtin molecule is too large to pass through the leaf stoma, but it will get taken up with the water by the root).

Not a problem. Neem oil solidifies rather quickly in cooler temperatures, anywhere from a thick honey to a heavy paste wax consistency depending on how cold it gets. It will return to a nice pour-able oil state in warm weather or if placed in a pan of warm water. FYI: In its original bottled concentrated form it will last for several years however once mixed for spaying garden plants it starts to lose its potency after 24 hours and should be discarded.
