If your bones are exploding all over the place when starting the simulation, try going into the settings for MassFX, and see if there's setting for "Steps" under the Time section. If this is set to 1, try setting it to 2, and see if that fixes it.

Thank you for the tut. This was exactly what I was looking for since the Reactor is gone from Max 2012. One thing that could help is to mention what you are clicking so people following along can do it easier. I am fairly new to Max and found it a little difficult. I guess that's what rewind and replay is for. :)

ok....I figured it out....I think it's a good tutorial but there are few moments where it is directed to people who have used 3d max a lot before. I am literally learning so it is kind of nerve-wracking when i can't figure something out. But still it HAS helped me a lot :)

I noticed the bones mostly near the end of the rope need higher springiness values to prevent from spreading out and going crazy, im using 20 for resting twist, swing, position and it seems to work now.

when u assign a universal constrain play with its damping value may be that will help u, it seems to work, also mass fx is very sensitive to real world scale, so keep that in mind when building a scene.

Very nice tutorial thank you. But the rope bounces allot it does not look realistic. How can it be made more smooth less jerk movement?

Hi, first of all thanks for the tutorial, but I have some issues as drzerg i think. It works with 3 bones but with 8 or ten, all bones joints break, and the bones begin to dance with not conexion. There is a green line that join their joints but the bones itselfs are completely messy. Any idea to solve this?

Good tutorial just for some reason I have the bones stretching a lot and flailing about I set the weight of the bones to zero and it failed as mentioned.Then I when I added the ball and it still failed and the weight of the ball is .001 please help.

Regardless of how I set up the gravity and the physical properties of the bone objects, upon running the simulation the bone chain begins to float upwards - the object mass and gravity strength only slows and doesn't stop this from happening. Also, when I move the ends of the cable during simulation, the chain swings out in a massively exaggerated fashion and the individual bones break apart before bouncing around and eventually springing back into place. It feels like there's a hidden force enabled or an additional option that I need to check on to achieve realistic behaviour - any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

For anyone who finds that the bones detach, bounce and stretch - you need to avoid creating the bones in a chain. Make them individually and continue as normal. However, I haven't figured out how to stop it from progressively going insane once you apply wind to it.

click off "Use Ground Plane" in the 'World'-Register in MassFX Tools to prevent grundtouching. Other way -> place all objects a bit higher (Z+)

in MAx 2014 my bones were also exploding, I just didn't change the default settings of the Uconstraints (didn't change the parameters to free like he did) and it worked ok.

thanks! I am sure I changed it to 1-2 and . I will try it next time again, however I noticed the scene units affect a lot, I had to put gravity down to -1000cm for it to work and it stopped exploding

Everything would be fine, but mine works only with 3 bones. With 4, small move makes them jump around the place. Tried changing different settings, nothing helps. bone mass helped a bit, but not enough. Scale is all like real world, nothing too big. What i want to make, is rigged headphones, where i can simulate theyr wire bending and folding.

Theoretically, how would you be able to suspend the rope between two spheres instead of just being attached to one? Any advice?

use an unused hidden bone at the beginning of the chain.. and add a constrain to that

use a universal constrain at the end of the bone chain as shown in the video ... for the beginning of the chain use a dummy/point and do a uni constrain .. and just link the dummy to ur object

Actually , I got it to not stretch and all worked, except the bones twist and so the rope/skin. The stupid Uconstrain dont kill the twist =P . Anyone know how to make the bones not twist??

Is there any way I can control the other side of the rope? Like I am able to control one side where the sphere is located but how can I control the opposite side? I want to somehow animate it the 2 ends but also have a dynamic rope type effect in between the rope. Anyway you can help?

BananaPepperProductions add 2 geometry at the 2 ends of the rope and make them "kinematic rigid body" and use a uni constrain between the geometrys and the ends of the rope ... now the links will react to any keyframe u put on the geometry ... select all the uni constrain and use damping value =>1 and disable twist

Atiq Alex I set the stretch in the bone tools menu to none but the result was the same. they floated up and exploded. I end up doing it over and the only thing I did different was not delete the last bone in the chain like video advised. They seem connected but there floating like the don't have mass. I'm not sure if it matter but I'm using version 2014., would that be an issue? Thanks for your help : )

Nora Bennis when I was tweaking the chain I also realized where I places it was a factor. Have to set where the ground is so it doesn't cause the chain to act funny.

Nora BennisAtiq Alex I checked none on the stretch option for the bones. Now, nothing is moving. Bones are dynamic rigid from the start, At the end of my rope, there is a mesh, set a Kinematic rigid body. But nothing's working :! Can you help me ? it's for school project. Thank you!!!
