How to Make a Simple Gnat Trap

A simple gnat trap using apple cider vinegar, dish soap, and a container with holes in it.

I’m a very tidy person. Recently noticed gnats. Tried this and within ten minutes there was a gnat in the mixture. Just for extra measure I tried the pure vanilla extract and water mixture on my skin. I’ve never had a gnat problem before and hope never again. Blessings.

My mother has dementia and when I visited had an infestation of fruit flies because she let food spoil in the kitchen. I cleaned her home and then made 2 of these. This mixture cleared up the bugs 100% in just a couple of days.

There are various "traps" being built on the internet for those pesky gnats... I like yours the best because it's easier to cleanup afterwards and refill rather than cutting up pieces of paper and use masking tape and reinvent the wheel all the time... Thanks for your video Bud... - BOB (O))_(O)

The trick to these "traps" is first and foremost, making sure you have correctly identified the insect. Fruit Flies, Sewer Gnats, Fungus Gnats, etc. all behave differently from each other. A true Fruit Fly will actually get down into the trap and drown/die in the mixture. Some people THINK they are seeing Fruit Flies, but they are Gnats instead. Totally different creature, different behavior toward mixtures. But there are some types of Gnats that won't do anything except land on the rim/edge or top of the trap, and never go into the trap. Fruit Flies by nature are more aggressive trying to get to what they think is fruit. (It's actually the carbon dioxide produced by the fermenting material) Sometimes instead of apple vinegar, you can use a mix of yeast and brown sugar, just a little of both, dissolved with water. This mix also produced carbon dioxide, and will attract true Fruit Flied AND mosquitos. But some kinds of gnats - it has no effect. The gnats that dont respond to the mixtures, they are best dealt with using the sticky fly strips. Hang them up in several places around the house. The strips work well for Gnats.

Correct. I have found this trap to kill both fungus gnats and fruit flies. It is most effective on fruit flies however. Add some preferably yellow sticky traps, and the fungus gnats will fall for those more probably. The main method to stop a gnat infestation at the source. You may think it is impossible to kill them all, only you realize they were just pulling a phoenix from a piece of fruit that fell behind the oven.

I didnt put any holes in it but I remember doing this many moons ago and it still worked. I'm doing it now.. I have two gnats and these bitches wont die.. it's like they're smarter than the others lol

You dont need to "trap" them. The soap breaks the surface tension of the liquid and can use just a jar lid. Once they fly onto it they wont fly off

It's either these are gangster gnats or not gnats at all because I have made two of these so far and not one single visitor has visited my trap :( they instead annoy the hell out of me lol

They are super attracted to the CO2 you breathe out, it really does seem like they are attacking your face! There are two types of main types of annoying gnats, Fungus gnats and fruit flies. This trap kills both but is best for fruit flies. A yellow sticky trap works better on fungus gnats. Be careful placing these as you really don't want one in your hair. Hope you've gotten rid of the gnats by now! Make sure to keep the sink clean, especially when gnats are present, as they are really good at reproducing there.

No, but it helps trap the gnats and prevent them from flying off. Once they hit the liquid they are toast though. A wine bottle and a funnel works even better.

Could you elaborate? This is most effective on fruit flies and fungus gnats. Try setting out more traps. These gnats breed like rabbits and can rise out of the ashes like Phoenix. The only other thing I can think of is the apple cider vinegar is crap. Try a name brand?

Kate S : All the soap does is break the surface tension of the water....so the gnats can't walk on the water/ wine surface. Then, they will sink and drown. So yes, you can use any dish soap.
