How to make Aleppo soap with recipe. Cold process soap making. Laurel Berry Soap.

Today I'm showing you how to make Aleppo soap, complete with a recipe with measurement or ready for you to add into a soap calculator. In this cold process soap-making tutorial, I'll take you step by step through the process with lots of detailed explanations.
We actually need to call the soap and Aleppo style soap as the name is protected in a similar way to things like Champagne etc.
Aleppo soap is a product loved for its naturally nourishing qualities and is among the best bar soap for sensitive skin. We are not allowed to make any claims about our soaps other than 'it will get you clean' so I will leave you to research the wonderful benefits of this soap.

Aleppo soap is wonderful. I visited Aleppo - and the rest of Syria of course - more than 20 years ago and I brought back some soaps from Aleppo. The other day I found a bar that I had not used. It is now very dark brown and I cut it in half to see the inside. The middle is a beautiful shade of bright green. The soap does not smell of anything and certainly doesn't smell rancid!

I have used them also growing up in Lebanon for a while. They are not expensive at all. Personally I do not like them much. But since they sell laurel berry oil so expensive in EU and such, it gives it this luxurious feel. It s actually the opposite in Syria.

What a wonderful soap. It's a cold process Aleppo, which I suppose if you want "authentic" Aleppo, there's an additional step of adding water and a ton of salt, and then slowly boiling out the "pure" soap, letting it float to the top, collecting it, and pouring it. It's effectively a hot process soap with the glycerin stripped away + a super long cure time. I'd be super curious what cold process Aleppo must be like. I imagine it's very gentle.

Thank you. I made Aleppo style soap once using the stick blender hot process method. It turned out pretty good. I thought it smelled like disinfectant when I first unmoulded it and that the oil itself had a smoky, almost barbecue sauce style smoky aroma about it. I had to warm the oil to get it out of the bottle because it was so thick and then I rinsed the bottle with olive oil so I didn't miss a drop!

Yes, it can be rather thick can't it and I do find that different c=batches can have different smells, but I guess that makes sense as it will be affected by climate and all sorts of things. It can be pretty strong when you unmould it can't it :-)

It needs a year to cure? Wow.. ^^ I thought maybe 6 months, because that's the cure for castille soap, I believe... I've recently cut my 4th batch of soap (so I'm quite new in this hobby), and this time around it was reaaally soft. (the recipe has a very high olive oil content, so I somewhat expected that) Does c-popping the soap help with that? Because your aleppo-style soap just cut beautifully!! And on that topic, if I might ask, does it matter, how long you stir the batter? Or will it be the same result, as long as you got it to trace?

I made some a couple of months ago. The only reason I'm commenting is mine did not turn out green like that at all? I made it 30% laurel berry oil with olive/rice bran oil. Dunno exactly why it's not green like that. Its more of a grayish beige color but it does still have a woodsy medicinal scent to it from the laurel berry oil.

I have given the 'proper' measurements, it's standard to give a soap recipe in %, the reason for this is that people all have different size soap moulds, if I said the amount in grams or ounces then if your mould was not exactly the same as mine then you would either have too much or not enough soap, so we always use %

I've made it quite a bit, they have a strong smell initially but it does calm down. I store them in slotted bakery trays, so they are protected from dust etc but have good air flow

Very interesting. When you let it cure for a year, is it out in the open? Or could it be put into a sealed container? I'm a very beginning soap maker, and I'm nowhere near ready to make soap like this, but it's tempting. And I'm wondering whether I could protect the bars from dust by closing them up, or if they need air circulating around them as part of the curing process.

Thanks Denise, you would need to cure it somewhere that has a good air flow. In fact real Aleppo is poured straight onto floors in buildings and then cut and stacked

Ooh, you may be right, but I'm not 100% sure on that as I've not seen any with Laurel leaf oil. Laurel leaf oil tends to be a type of essential oil, where as laurel berry oil is a liquid oil that would be added as part of the main soaping oils for saponification.

Aleppo soap is long hot process soap, not CP soap

Yes, the real traditional way is, I do agree, but this is just showing a way that people can make an aleppo style soap

I find hot process soap to be much more drying to the skin than cold process soap… So I will be making the cold process Aleppo style soap…
