Out of curiosity, do you use any sort of preservative for this method (like Germall or Optiphen)? I feel like the pH would help prevent bacteria growth, but with water you never know haha
@user-jv8kr4im1t
@user-jv8kr4im1t 5 ай бұрын
Depends on the amount of water you dilute with...larger than 2x should probably get preserved. Germall is perfectly fine to use but liquid soap is finniky with oils and preservative....if it separates play with the recipe a lil.
@WalnutCreekBathBoutique
@WalnutCreekBathBoutique 5 ай бұрын
I do usually add a preservative but honestly don't know how much good it does. The problem I have found is finding a preservative that works with the higher pH of soap. Germall is fine but it will state good at below 8 pH but can work at higher numbers. That is not much help LOL, but it is what I use. You are right that the pH of soap really inhibits growth. I appreciate your jumping in @user-jv8kr4im1t - I had not thought through the amount of dilution water effecting the need for pH - as water has a pH of 7 does adding water drop the pH of the soap??
@user-jv8kr4im1t
@user-jv8kr4im1t 5 ай бұрын
@@WalnutCreekBathBoutique Yes, the great thing about liquid soap is you can PH test... Bar soap is harder. Because PH is measured in a liquid solution strips come in handy. The water will lower your ph that is where the mold starts to take hold... I will admit I haven't had mold without a preservative but I still use one just to be safe lol. We are all still getting better, it's always good to share what you know 🙏🏾❤️
@claytonjames4779

nice presentation. sanitizing though? your temps are over boiling. nothing can survive that. PH can also change after letting it sit for a week, usually down, as any free alkaline is absorbed while it sits. Also, liquid soap will never be like the soap you buy in a bottle because... it's NOT soap. it's a chemical detergent made for skin and they are engineered to appear thick but it's not an indication of it being more 'concentrated' look at Dr. Bronner: it's runny but you don't need much! However, there is some info out there about using salt in your lyewater as it apparently makes some of the chemical chains in the soap change from being long and stringy (hence, liquid) to a mixture of some crystal structure with stringy and you get a boost on thickness!

I have messed with soaps for over 20 some years now off and on I really liked your video and it was helpful I would love to understand the benefit of using glycerin instead of water to add to Koh to I've done cold process hot process I like the hot process in the Crock-Pot because like you said you can use it right away you should have seen what I did years ago and making the clear glycerin bars you want to talk about a science experiment boiling a soap base on a bed of 90% alcohol with a plastic Dome on it on the stovetop beautiful outcome but very dangerous I wonder if that processes work safer in a Crock-Pot nowadays

I've tried this twice now today. Both times my glycerin and KOH mix turned thick white and eventually rock hard. My glycerin was at 230F. I mixed the lye in slowly. Stirred the entire time. Why won't it work with me? Am I doing something wrong? It almost feels like there's too much lye for the glycerin to dissolve but I've used a lye calculater for a 85% purity KOH. Please help!

Temperature for glycerin and oils?
@sheralync5854
@sheralync5854 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. Thank you for doing the video. You did a very nice job and the product looks beautiful 🙂 This approach made sense to me up until the point you add unheated water to dilute the soap paste. At first, I was thinking the benefit of the glycerin method was to avoid a huge hunk of soap paste, which it didn't, so at first glance, it seems to be similar to many other low temp hot process soap making methods (make a past, dilute the paste)? I don't understand the benefits of this method. Can you help me understand? There's a 30-minute liquid soap method using a no paste high temp hot process method (205-220F). I thought that since the glycerin was at 250F this was going to be a high-temp soap method. Why heat the glycerin to 250 F ? is it speeding up the process? Cold process, low temperature, high temperature methods are fun to experiment with. For liquid soap, I personally prefer a no paste method, as my upper body strength isn't what it used to be LOL
@WalnutCreekBathBoutique
@WalnutCreekBathBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
I prefer the high temp liquid soap as well, this is the first liquid soap method I was ever successful at and have used it for years before discovering the high temp method. I honestly don't remember if the water was to be added hot or cold, I just always throw it in and wait for it to dissolve. LOL

Hello! I don't use "natural" preservatives so can't speak to that. As far as chemical preservatives, I would say there are just so many out there...I would not know where to begin to help you find one in your location, for your tropical environment. I will say it is very important to choose one that is compatible with your soap. Find a preservative that has an effective range for that. Sorry I am not more help with that!

She did not give us the measurements of the oils she used. In fact she prepared the oils and mixed beforehand which is the dumbest thing anybody could do when making a tutorial on how to make soap. If you don't know how to make a tutorial properly don't make one. There is absolutely nothing I can do with this tutorial because it was made improperly.

@WalnutCreekBathBoutique

pH 12 is a little high. You can make a borax solution, mixing some borax and water together - adding a little at a time will help bring down the pH, you might get it down to 11 which is more in the normal range. You can also let it sit for a few weeks and retest - I have heard that sometimes the pH will drop at it sits but don't know this first hand. Good Luck!

@WalnutCreekBathBoutique
@WalnutCreekBathBoutique 7 ай бұрын
I normally do add a preservative - I don't remember on this video if I did or not. There is some debate on the necessity of it though - the pH on liquid soap is just as high as bar soap - around the 9-11 range. This is why bar soap does not need a preservative. there was a time when I didn't add it at all but I do now as I do sell the soaps, but I am not convinced it does much for the soap. It's also not easy to find a preservative that works at that high of a pH so you have to be watchful of that.
