I have some questions: do we always have to wear a mask with resin? what happens if it doesn't fit? Are there ready-made resins? or do you always have to put the catalyst? and then I wanted to know if the colors can be of various types (metallic, acrylic, etc.) and if they always have to mix with the resin. Thanks
@SPS_survivor9 ай бұрын
I use art resin quite often and I maybe doing it wrong but there’s zero foc’s them along with other resins. I do, however always have a window open and a bit of flow … it’d be pretty cool to have ready made resins, but you’d still need to stir and mix it well. Mica powders, glitters, acrylic paints do mix with resin - I would go with mica powders if you’re just starting out - do you have something in particular that you’d like to do, for example - ocean art?! If so, buy a few “decent” blues, greens etc - they seem expensive to buy but they are so highly pigmented that a little really does go a long way … you will NOT achieve lacing of cellls with anything other than a good quality white pigment … hope I’ve helped. Enjoy!! Not sure what you mean about “if they have to mix with the resin?”

@@mariannaarnone7120I am so sorry I missed this! I feel terrible. I really do my best to answer all questions within a day. You can ask me questions in the comments anytime, sorry again that I missed this! There are many types of epoxy. I don’t know of any one part resins that are similar to this unfortunately. Yes you should always use PPE including a mask when working with epoxy! Watch the video again and check time stamps because I discuss the pigments very thoroughly! I hope that helps! Forgive me that it was such a late response 🩵
@backwooddesignco2 ай бұрын
@@SPS_survivorThank you so much for stepping in to answer the comment above because I missed it! Such an answer community here 🩵 I think you means VOCs. The issues isn’t generally with the epoxy itself, as many claim to be VOC free. However, the issue is heating the epoxy with a torch or heat gun as it changes the composition.

Thank you for your tutorial. This may be realize that this is not a project for the weekend crafter. @backwooddesignco Жыл бұрын
I base my prices off time and materials. Most people that are undercharging are probably new at the process or just do smaller and local markets. It really depends on who your customers are. To start, set yourself an hourly wage, then figure out your time and material costs, then double it. That’s a good starting point. Then adjust from there!

I’m sorry, I just cannot stop watching you!!!! Maybe I will try your epoxy and white tint. Do you try to put your white right on the edge of your clear, with a hint of it on the dry? Because I tend to lose my define edge all the time. It’s so frustrating to see exactly what I want to do, and not have it turn out. Like you, I don’t like a huge vigorous wave, I like a small frothy undertow on the edge, but like 3 small ones…your videos are so great, can’t tell you how appreciative I am for your wonderful talent that you so kindly share.

I have watched a lot of these tutorial vids and I think yours is prob the best I've watched..................so............... thank you for taking the time to help others. I am also impressed as you are the only one that warned about spontaneous combustion of the rags after oiling. This actually happened to me about two weeks ago using Rubio Monocoat and if it wasn't for smoke detectors, I might not be here now as my kitchen caught fire from a sponge that I was using to apply the oil. Apparently it is the linseed oil that oxidises and gets hot according to our fire brigade here in the UK. So, again, keep producing the vids, they are awesome. Steve Britton

Thanks for watching. Be sure to wear a mask and please don’t do in the house. It’s nasty stuff and stinks when it’s heated even slightly. Let me know how it works for you. You can also apply a paste wax instead of tape, but I don’t love that method because it messes with the finish sometimes. Now, I just zip off the drops with an oscillating multi-tool or just sand them. I actually find it easier/faster for me than the tape. The tape is great for beginners though, or anyone who is less comfortable with the sanding or doesn’t have good dust extraction. Hope that helps! Happy creating 🥰🌊

@backwooddesignco2 жыл бұрын
My pleasure! So happy to help. Yes, there is a 1/8” variance between the wood and epoxy surfaces. You can add clear epoxy in the low area to level it out and then sand the entire surface to either keep satin, or to apply a final coat for a glossy sheen. If the surface is fully covered with epoxy, then it’s not recommended for cutting on any longer 😁 Hope that helps!!

Just make sure you get your next coat on before it sets, or you’ll have to sand in between coats. I will use that method on really soft or porous wood sometimes. I don’t tend to have that issue with the epoxy I use. If you’re using a high enough viscosity epoxy, you should really be able to get sufficient coverage with one coat. I do find it tends to suck into end grain more easily though. Hope that helps! I would just recommend trying both ways and see which way works best for you. In either case, you’ll likely need to do two layers anyways until you get the hang of it… so it’s kind of six of one, half dozen of the other if you catch my drift haha 🫶🏼

Beautiful work! It seems like I always ruin my piece when doing the white waves. Myself, I like just a frothy undertow coming in or going out. But I never seem to get a thicker white edge. If I put more on, then it just seems to go crazy all up in the blue, which is never my intention. I will say, doing something like this is very different from counter and table tops. And I always seem to get a hair or piece of lint in my work!! I just hate that, or my sides are not smooth, or I get little dents in my work. I’m sure I play with mine too long…knowing when to quit is my biggest challenge!! Love your video!!
@backwooddesignco2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! Are you using a table top or casting epoxy? A table top epoxy will help you to achieve this effect quite easily as an overlay. You can also pick up the board and slightly tilt it back towards you and wait a couple seconds for the wave to roll back onto itself. Lint, dust and hairs…are the bane of my existence haha. Hard to avoid. I’ve set up a dedicated “clean room” for pouring epoxy. Has exhaust and air filters. Makes a bit of a difference, but I’m always fighting dust lol. Thanks so much again for watching 🫶🏼

Lindo trabalho. Parabéns. Ficou top.

A marca é Osmo Oil. Espero que isso ajude! 🌊🩵

Thank you so much for the detailed tutorial! One question, my white tinted resin is really thin and spreads a lot the minute I lay it down. I added 3 drops of tint into 3 or so ounces of resin. I'm using Mixol Universal Tints Oxide White #25 and MAS Table Top resin and hardener. Any ideas on why it's so thin?
@backwooddesignco Жыл бұрын
What brand of epoxy are you using?? I’d try letting the mixed white epoxy set up for 10-15 min before putting down. Also don’t go too crazy with the heat gun as that can push a lot of the product off. It could also be the epoxy you’re using.

Thanks for the feedback. It was the exact same type of project and even wood species. However, this video was filmed in one day with minimal editing as it was for the woodworking show. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to use the same piece for the finishing stage as the epoxy takes 24-48 hours to cure ☺️

I love, that great tutorial 👏❤️ a single question, what proportions of resin and white mixtures to create the effect of the waves??
@backwooddesignco3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching!! I’m actually working on a video for this next! The best way to test it start by adding a little white pigment to the clear at a time and then mixing and testing on a scrap piece of wood. If then add a little more pigment and do the same thing. Usually 3-4 tests is sufficient. After that wait and let them cure and then see what you’re left with. It’s helpful to make test notes and label your sample. After that you’ll have an idea of how much pigment is needed to get the effect you’re going for. I did a lot of samples when I started! I hope that helps until my next video comes out ❤️🙏🏻 Good luck!

Great tutorial. Straight to the point about everything! How do you get the edges/ sides to retain the resin? My resin just drops straight off the sides during the drying period 😥 I tried sanding and even painting the sides with no luck
@backwooddesignco3 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I actually have a video on that specifically coming up, but in the meantime here’s some tips: -make sure you’re using a 1:1 high viscosity epoxy -if you’re using 1:1 and it’s still not sticking to the side, you can pour your epoxy on your piece in the centre and let it set up for about 5-15 min. to let it thicken ever so slightly before you start to spread it around -you can also tape the sides and back of your board (I like to start 2-3” further up than where I want my finished line to end) and lay out your design and let the entire artwork set up for about 10-30min before pulling the tape back and letting it slowly slide off the sides. You’ll want to keep an eye on it to fix any spots where there is surface tension and it’s not dripping evenly -beside that, the only other suggestions I would make is to use concentrated epoxy/resin pigments as they will be more opaque and help the colour stick to the edges better. Also, a second coat can help to fix anything you’re not happy with (just be sure to get the next coat on before the epoxy is fully set for the best adhesion) Good luck! I hope this helps! Let me know how it goes the next time you try it. Thanks for subscribing and stay tuned for more tutorials 🤍

Hi! Thanks for this awesome tutorial, I really need help with something.. I'm having a really hard time with the blue pigments, I don't understand what to buy, i live in Mexico and limited to Amazon Mexico, ive bought acrylic paint(it does not seem to blend with the resin). There is mica powder(but seems to be metallic and glitters so I don't know if that works)...... I just can't seem to find the good color options, any recommendations?
@backwooddesignco3 жыл бұрын
You’re so welcome!! Thanks for watching. I’d recommend finding a liquid resin or epoxy pigment- sometimes pastes can work well too, but I’d start with the liquids. Personally, I don’t like to use acrylic paints and pigments, they tend to yellow more quickly as they sometimes can’t withstand the UV and heat from the epoxy. My favourites are Ecopoxy and Chill Drops by Polymeres Technologies. Mixol works great as well! Counter Culture DIY has some nice pre-mixed colours also. I’m not sure what you have access to in your area, but feel free to do some searches and you can send me a message on Facebook or Instagram if you’d like me to check them out before you buy them ☺️
